I think Lynch chose this song to open Mulholland Drive because of the blatant sexuality of the dance itself...the jitterbug. Obviously I'm aware of the back story of her winning the contest.
Diane seems to be a woman who has been sexually abused...probably from an early age (like Palmer). This is addressed throughout the movie in various ways...some obvious, some cryptically very well hidden.
