@icramer As ph4nt0m said, he's allowed to pull off the line if he cannot keep pace since the final time is measured by the third cyclist. You can see at around 4:20 the team starts to sprawl out to sling the third rider forwards.
You can imagine the guy who pulled off from the line as a rabbit maybe setting the pace - typical for milers on a 400m track going for a sub 4.
Re: why post a fast quali time, and slower in the final?
This is fairly common in pursuit. You want to qualify as fast as possible: a. you don't want to miss the cut! and b. the faster you qualify, the weaker your opponent will be in the final. Once you get to the final, it doesn't matter what your time is, as long as you beat your opponent.
Pity it no longer the fastest. Hey the british are not to bad with out wiggo Hey, Fastest qualifing with swift then 2nd fastest time ever with Tennant in Final.
For those who've never done it; the secret of this 'lung busting' type of racing is stay as close as possible to the wheel in front and to spend as little time as possible off the back during changes. e.g. the change at 3.58 nearly loses it.
when you go down to 3 riders you have to adjust the exchange by going less high up the bank. The exchange at 3:58 was either a mental lapse or poor coaching--because it will happen every time if you forget and take the same amount of track as you did with four riders...
yay i have trained with those =D
