I agree with the person that said the neptunes love to waste great beats. It's true, there's so many gems that they never release, or that get cut from albums, or they give nice beats to low-profile artists who are not going to make the song into a hit. If I were the neptunes, I'd establish a system where I'd give the hot beats to hot artists, and the not-so-hot beats to low-profile artists. That way, all their best beats have a good chance of being hits because they give them to popular artists

Producing isn't just about making music, it's also about smart planning and smart business decisions, most producers are able to make it big by piggy-backing on popular artists, that's how the neptunes became famous, for their work with noreaga. lack of mainstream popularity is not lack of fame and fortune. just to put you on a little game, most real musicians would rather have longevity than a year or two of mass appeal. and the best way to gain longevity is to find and appeal to your core group of fans. everyone can't be radiohead and enjoy longterm critical and (relative) commercial success for doing music they like.
