By today's politically correct standards, that commercial is racist six ways from Sunday. Of course we all know the only acceptable racism today must be directed at whites.
I can hardly wait until we have to write down anything we want to say and submit it to the political correctness police for approval before we can actually say it.
@everyone - This ad is only racist if you or someone you love is a "Chinese Type Baby" . . .
I have never seen a "Chinese Type Baby". If someone would please show me a "Chinese Type Baby", i think we can solve this question once and for all. PS - You guys ever see a McDonalds ad? I hate McDonalds, and I don't dance everytime I'm near one. Get me to a Wendy's. . . It's Pop Lock & Drop Time!!!
@70sGrOOVeTuBE So back when racial minorities were kept out of certain schools, jobs, neighborhoods, etc., that wasn't racist, but those who pointed out the racial bias were racist for pointing it out. Wow. Thank you oh enlightened one for "educating" us.
aww come on people! It's a real cute commercial! I think its funny..not racist! have a laugh..relax!! everyone wants to always make everythign a "race" issue! please!!! I always loved this commercial! :D rock On 1960's!!
@xfg102457 The mode of speech and accent are clearly a white person mimicking a stereotype of what a Chinese person might sound like. If you don't think there's a problem with this, you've clearly never met a kid who's never met a Chinese person - only heard stereotypes.
This is NOT racist. You're an asshole. It's "politically correct" (translation= thin-skinned crybabies) people like you that are ruining this country. And just so you know, there is a growing segment of America that's tired of your "correctness".
spoon is not a western invention. the chinese invented the compass. the compass was made with a bowl of water with a chinese spoon (the ones with the flat base) put on top of the water to tell direction, lols what the fuck, besides, you can use chop sticks to eat jello, the baby couldn't because it doesn't know how to use chop sticks yet.
Around 1964, Pillsbury used to have its own line of flavored drink mixes to compete with Kool-Aid. It had flavors like Injun Orange (which was changed to Jolly Olly Orange) and Chinese Cherry (which was changed to Choo Choo Cherry).
Anybody else get the feeling that the footage here is authentic but the audio was redubbed more recently? "Chinese-type baby" ... seems racist to the point of caricature to me
@Gator6120 No, that's authentic and wonderful. You must be young or naive. We used to be able to make fun of other races and cultures before people lost their sense of humor.
First of all, why is the narrator calling the baby a 'he' when clearly it was meant to be a girl by the bow in her hair? Secondly, did I really here him say '... small Chinese TYPE baby'? >.<
Up next, Mexican Jello in taco and beans flavors and also for black people we will find something offensive "flavor" Jello. What were the Jello people thinking??
@stompmonkey1234 Sensibilities change over time, and this was made in a far less sensible (and tolerant) point in history. nowadays, this wouldn't fly at all and the guy who thought it was a good idea in the first place would likely be fired (thankfully).
@poopskinTheLiar Wouldn't we be less tolerant now, for not being tolerant of anything that could be remotely labeled as "racist" or "insensitive"? A tolerant culture is one where things like this are just taken in stride. We live in a completely intolerant culture, where we are not allowed to do anything that may bother another or make them feel different.
@DarkElf109 Gee, that's the dumbest statement I have read in a while. Racism is based on hatred, ignorance and fear and that has killed millions of people around the world. Tolerance does NOT equate acceptance, understanding nor actually learning anything of value. Taking things in stride is like a bully beating up your own kid and telling him/her, "what did you do to provoke him/her?" And what on Earth does that "do anything that may BOTHER another culture" mean anyway?
@mrfrogbutt1 Arizona State University had the option of giving free Amazon Kindles to a group of students in order to pilot a project for students to get digital textbooks. This would have been cheaper, more easily searchable, and would take up less space. However, a student group advocating blind students stopped the project, as the Kindle doesn't have Text To Speech in the menu system. As a result, the entire student body was blocked from gaining the benefits in order to appease a minority.
@mrfrogbutt1 Hindering a larger group in order to avoid differentiating a smaller group (that was, in this case, already hindered, as publishing companies already disadvantage the disabled), is hardly tolerant. Just as is making sure to put people of every race and creed into every textbook to make sure nobody feels disadvantages. Same with making sure that companies have minorities employed, and that commercials show people from all cultures.
@mrfrogbutt1 We have become intolerant of accepting that there are different people of different culture and different walks of life. We have become intolerant of anything that shows one classification of person in a different way, even if it's rightly so. In Madison, WI, 50% of African Americans lack high school diplomas. However, it would be "in bad taste" to mention as much in anything that involves public opinion.
@mrfrogbutt1 Is it wrong to say that a certain group is "better" or "worse" or subject to a different set of laws or rights for their race? Definitely. But saying that people who emigrate from foreign countries have accents that go with their native language? How is that a lack of tolerance, when it is something that we see every day. Go to any Chinese food restaurant run by emigrants from China. They have accents. Hell, it's like saying someone from TX won't have an accent. It's the exception.
@mrfrogbutt1 As for the comment about people being bothered, that's all it takes for a lawsuit to be drawn up. There was a Jewish couple residing in an apartment complex that had motion sensors to activate their lights, to save on power. The couple, hoping to observe the Sabbath requirement of not using electronics, sued the landlord for the lights, since they apparently broke that requirement. This is a wonderful example of how people in the minority still expect to have their every whim met.
@mrfrogbutt1 Racism used to think better or worse of people is wrong. I will agree with that. But trying to purport that all people of all races and creeds are the same is just as wrong. I can only really speak for the US, but in the late 19th century, we put a heavy emphasis on immigrants to integrate themselves as "Americans", and throw off all identity from their country of origin. This is just starting to turn itself around, as people are taking more pride in their cultural heritage.
@mrfrogbutt1 We are now in the process of trying to reconcile these two ideas: that we are all unique, and that we are all part of the same. As we make this transition, we run into this exact problem. We are taught to be tolerant, and to accept people of other cultures. But the second that you go and talk about a culture, you're suddenly a racist. "Color blindness" isn't a thing. There are people of various races and creeds, and we need to just accept that.
@mrfrogbutt1 So, is this Jello add "racist"? Yeah. But the entire racist implication is that Chinese immigrants (or perhaps their descendants) have accents reflecting their native language and have different facial features. It's not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to vote or have jobs. When we can live with things like this without outrage, then we'll actually be tolerant.
@DarkElf109 I thought the implication was that Chinese people only recently grasped the concept of using spoons, and thought that eating jello was the only thing that they were invented for.
@DarkElf109 While your response is certainly interesting, i politely disagree with it. Nonetheless, as a internet fight has already popped up i'm just going to duck out of here to avoid further conflict instead...
So it's a "racist" commercial, SO THE FUCK WHAT, BIG FUCKING DEAL, I laughed my White Ass Off; in other words ROFLMWAO, everybody these days is soooo fucking over sensitive!!!
In the 1950's, this was considered "homage to another's history." Just because Asian culture has evolved to the point where it'd be insulting to say they're still like this, doesn't mean that it was completely inappropriate for its time.
Given how unpopular eating cows is over in some parts of Asia, it's strange they'd be enjoying a dish made partially from crushed cow horns.
Nothing borderline racist about this. God, thousand dollars says this is a white motherfucker imitating a Chinese accent, glorifying such a "great western invention," what culture could live without Western spoons? We didn't fucking invent spoons. For fuck's sake. They've been around since fucking cavemen. What the hell kind of propaganda is this. "Yay, mindlessly consume our product, give me money, put down other cultures. Also try to forget the cruelty toward animals involved in its production
You can eat Jello with chop sticks though. Just chop it into cubes. It's easier sometimes than eating it with a fork or spoon - since it likes to jump all over the place.
Haha more racist towards whity. (I'm white) I just thought it was funny when the mom brought him the "great western invention". Lol

Stereotyping isn't the same as racism. I'd be interested to know what others will think of our commercials and culture fifty years from now.
