  • i love the way they dress so stunning and classy!

  • nobody saw me...how sad?

  • her mother was a stalker

  • @knowledgebk305 no her mother was a concerned parent.

  • Is it me or does Sarah Jane resemble Katy Perry? But anyway, such an interesting plot. I saw the 1934 version of this film a couple of years ago, so I already know have an idea of how it'll end. How sad for a mother to endure what Anne has.

  • Sarah Jane represents the tragedy of America's racial past . She had the looks to pass as white so she embraced it and tried desperately to separate herself from her blacks roots because her society view black as inferior . Unfortunately, you need Self love and acceptance before you can truly be happy . I pray for the Sarah Jane of the world .

  • @fosg2 You really did explaine that right Thank You

  • Also I wish people would stop saying she is biracial, she was black

  • @tamaradaluvgoddess thankyou very much. especially in that time and era. biracial were black.

  • Thats bs, blacks that tried or passed for whites are ashamed of themselves

  • I use to be like Sarah Jane growing up, I had issues with myself, I'm mixed like Sarah Jane, my mum to is black, I didn't know whether I was suppose to act like a black or White person, so I had a lot of hate, my grandma (my moms ma) made me watch this film, after watching it I decided I wasn't going to head down the same road as Sarah Jane, I'm 19 now, and have never looked back! This film changed me, it opened my eyes and made me realise!

  • @zarzar17 what is acting like a black person? That's why people are stereotyped now.

  • You can really feel her mother's anguish in these scenes. ;_;

  • i wish her mother would just leave her the fuck alone

  • @mrmba09 her mother was fucking dying and had every right to look for her dumbass kid and try to talk some since into her.

  • @mrmba09 do you have any kids?

  • I'm a Christian and proud of it....but, I would of never treated my mother like that, besides....disowning her to her face!! What?!!!! I just didn't like the way she did that!!

  • @DragonflyNoir10 Thank you and AMEN!

  • That card had so much more than what Laura read!

  • people that were black and look like sarah jane didnt have any choice but pass because its hard going through life telling people your black but look white and most people mistake you for a white boy or white girl.

  • "now don't be mad honey. Nobody saw me" such a sad line. I don't know weather to pity Annie or be angry at Sarah Jane.

  • wtf! Sara was a crude witch. Never would I treat my mom like that.

  • Does anyone know what song that is at the beginning of this clip?

  • a lot of blacks passed as white but only to better their lives & get jobs & an education but they knew who they were & they weren't ashamed, they just knew they weren't gonna get that far in life as a black person & even if they did it would take years...but the way that Sarah Jane did it was totally different her reason is because she didn't want to be black not because she wanted to get in school or do more things in life she just hated her heritage & disrespected her mother

  • I'm about Annie's skin tone, and I wouldn't have had a problem with my daughter passing for white to better herself in life. Especially if chasing her down alienated her from me.

But...stripping?! Surely SJ can aim higher. Annie was right to get her kicked out.

  • Passing as white is one thing, but being mean to your mother who has done nothing but love you, that's totally messed up. I'm not saying it's ok to be something you're not, but she could've passed as white in the day, then come home at night and be nice to her mother.

  • It's not that simple, because- the way I see it, anyway- it's not a lack of love between the two, but polar opposites in their philosophies. Annie completely accepted, and never challenged, the paradigm at the time, with whites at the top. Not that she could have. This just drove Sarah Jane up the wall, even when she was a little girl. And the richer Miss Lora and Suzy got, the more pissed off SJ became. Totally unable to change the system, super-pale black SJ wanted to play it.

  • @jchriswest Sarah Jane was like the Coleman Silk character in "The Human Stain". She thought like a slave. She only saw the limitations of her race. Even back then, Black people were lawyers, doctors, accountants, teachers, professors, business owners and so on. Even back then, there were happy Black people who lived full lives. But she couldn't see that. There are other paths to happiness other than being White.

  • Reading these comments just highlights what a tricky subject this is. So brave for Hollywood to even tackle this subject back in the 1950s !!

She wants to pass as white coz she'll get on on the World better ~ especially as a teenager ~ even if that means denying her mixed heritage. Her Mum knows this, but doesnt want to stand in her way yet doesnt want to lose her. A heavy subject indeed.

The film deals with the whole issue very well. This was white America in the 50s. Heartbreaking.

  • I don't know how things were back then but Annie just needed to let go. Sarah jane was 18 she was a grown women. Let her live the life she wants to live. Annie did her best but seriously if Annie would of let her go her stress levels would of went down and she could of lived longer. mamma's back then babied their children to much.

  • to be honest, ms. sarah was prettier than a lot of the white women on that screen...its a trip when such beautiful women with color in their skin prefer to be white then as is. when white people tan to look like em. smh

  • 8:39 :,( poor mom

  • why didnt her mom just leave her alone..i would think she would be happy that sarah jane could get equal opportunity to be something other then somebody's maid.

  • @evileyez504 seem like you missed the whole point........just cause she could pass as white doesn't mean it was right be PROUD of who you are even if it means you have to work harder and/or get treated worst...her mother wanted her to be not be ashamed of her race you see what happen when ppl found out............SMDH to think ppl still don't understand that now in 2011

  • @liveurelife2009 okay fine let sarah jane face a life of being a treated with discrimination, spit on, hated, abused legally(because that is 1950s not the year 2000). let her be nothing more than someone elses maid all in the name of pride. you win :-)

  • @evileyez504 Dude did you read what you posted you sound dumb......the movie is from the 1950's that is what happen then so what you rather her attempt to live a good life as a good ole' white woman; did you watch the entire movie look where she ended up anyway; I have family members that survive all the discrimination, segregation, getting spit on and beat and they did it with their heads held high; SO for all them LOOK where WE R 2DAY.....

  • @liveurelife2009 your stupid the only way sarah jane could progress is by pretending to be white. .i know you live in ur little decade where you can be black and not be killed off and it not matter but this is 1950s where a white man could beat your ass and sitll not even get arrested.. her moma shoulda back the fuck up and been happy her child had a chance not be nothing more than somebody else's maid..stupid bitch

  • @88jadebabe n the purpose of your ignorant comment was.........you just made yourself look like a fool by taking the time to type up those lines n end it with callin' me a bitch......you obviously r not happy wit yourself to take the time to write a stranger and curse them out SMH ur an idiot!!!!! :) :) :) :)

  • I know it was yough being a minority specifically black back then but Sarah Jane should happy happy to have a loving and caring mother, the girl was so selfish and confused. You can't deny what you are jsut learn to live with it. avoiding the issue is never the solution.

  • Sarah Jane is a babe!!

  • Do people here even realize how hard it is to be a light-skinned black in the 1950s?

  • what song is that in the show?

  • I could never, ever live with myself if I treated my mother like that.

  • also, sarah jane is not an enemy she is a victim.

i can't imagine how hard it would be to be in her shoes.

  • People need to stop hating on sarah jane.

  • My favorite part of this move starts at 5:40! Love the Burlesque Sara Jane!

  • Even when the child needs to learn the hard way...a loving mama still finds it painful to let go.

  • I don't care what color you happened to be, if you r a mother you have to identify with Annies pain. Trying to raise a confused, rebellious child, is an issue any loving mother can relate to. Loving mothers never give up. At so

  • Where is her white father? Is he dead of did he divorce Annie when he found that his only daughter was not born all white?

  • Poor Annie! Her only daughter's hatred and rejection of her is taking both a mental and physical toll on her!!!

  • Sarah Jane is so selfish!! You cannot run away from who you are!!!

  • HOW DARE SHE BREAK HER MOTHER'S HEART LIKE THAT!!! HOW DARE SHE!!

  • She can run all she wants too, one thing is certain, if she was to have a baby with a white guy, that baby will come out fair skin, then she really would have some explaining to do.

  • You cannot blame Annie for being really shocked and horrified that her only daughter is acting like that in order to escape racism.

  • very shameful girl.

  • that is embarrasing though....leave the girl alone.i say.

  • SAD MOVIE.....REJOICE IN WHAT EVER COLOR...BUT DONT DIS YOU MOM

  • Annie was completely missing Sarah Jane's point. She wanted to be white. No amount of talk would get Annie to understand that the only way Sarah Jane would be happy was to be herself. When she looked in the mirror she saw a white woman. She did not identify with being black, nor did she want to. Annie should have understood this and let her go.

  • @hatelizwebber Fool it's only daughter it's not that easy to just let her go especially in that world.

  • Sarah Jane is old enough to make her own decisions whether they're wrong or right. Her mother knew Sarah Jane felt about being black. She wanted her daughter to feel the same way she did. Teenage girls never agree with their mothers. She should have let Sarah Jane live how she wanted.

  • @hjb103055 YEA SHE SHOULD OF BUT SHE LOVE HER ...SARAH JANE WAS DENYING HER OWN MOM...SMH DATS NOT RIGHT

  • @723887 I'm not saying it is right. I'm only saying that the mother knew how she felt.

  • This movie is 50 years old and I have met many people who are still passing in 2010. Why? Ms. Juanita Moore and Ms. Susan Kohner stole this film away from the late great Lana Turner and Sandra Dee.

  • Sarah Jane looks a lot like that girl from Skins!

  • this can happen to any most all of blacks are mixed but dont know it if your ancestors were in slavery your probably mixed because white masters took advantage of black women slaves and raped them and this often left them pregnant with a mixed race baby that looked fully black

  • @34099832 : And mixed race babies that looked fully white also.

  • high yellow skinded blacks could pass for white too because that is considered european white.

  • Nope. Sarah Jane can't dance to save her life.

  • Damn Sarah Jane jus killin her mother and not even carin.

  • "This is the early 1900-50's.script. When are the kids of today going to look back, instead of reading a 'todays script' to an old movie? It iscalled 'Imitastions of Life.' "

  • "This is the early 1900-50's.script. When are the kids of today going to look back, instead of reading a 'todays script' to an old movie? "

  • Sarah Jane was mentally and emotionally scarred. A lot of pain. So she caused pain.

  • I can NOT fathom or imagine doing such a thing to my MOTHER.

  • WHY CANT THE WOMEN DRESS THIS CLASSY NOW?

  • @TheDefjams I totally agree. Times have unfortunately changed and self respect lost in the sauce.

  • @1024SueNelson they really look and dress classy like real Barbies

  • @TheDefjams Well i, for one, am glad i´m not limited to uncomfortable clothes and shoes, lots of hair dye and make-up.

  • @TheDefjams : I Agree!!

  • Some times mothers or fathers have to allow their kids make their mistakes and her mother dont know how hard she's making it on her daughter. The more she kept comes around the more she push her own daughter away from her. When you are bi or like me multi racial you have to find a part of your race where you fit in and go with it. I know some people may disagree with me but you never walk in my shoes before. It was when President Obama was question about his blackness made me feel better.

  • @QueenEiliYAH what the hell is wrong with you sarah jane wanted to be white to be accepted and to be loved by other people and it was hard for her cause she look white but was black and her mother loved her so much and wanted to please her. alot of people dont have mothers like sarah janes. one truly loves you and wouldnt do anything to hurt you. her mother didnt push her away, sarah jane tried to push her mother away.

  • IT BREAKS MY HEART WHEN SARA JANE DENIES HER MOTHER. I MUST SAY THOUGH SHE DID AN AMAZING ACTING JOB

  • I luked it up. Sara Jane is half mexican half Jewish. why cudn't they jus get a regular light skinned sistah to play Sara Jane????

  • @cami725 I saw the original and the daughter was really black, but it wasn't believable because she didn't look like she could pass. The fact that you had to look up Susan Kohner's ethnicity shows that she is truly racially ambiguous which is more marketable...well, for this kind of role.

  • @cami725 : There are some mixed people who look white like Sara Jane.

  • @cami725 Because in those days, even if you were ligthskinned, if you were black, you were not given very good roles. It was not common. Juanita Moore landed this great role, but if you had African blood that was known, then, well, good luck.

  • wow.. well this lil bitch need a fucking slap wtf wrong wid Sarah Jane. aint nothing wrong wid being black. im not fully black but im mixed but i still have the light brown comlexion.. oh em ge if i was living back in those days and i knew sarah jane.. strupes.. fuck like dis duz make u sad

  • I don't think Sarah Jane "didn't care," she just did not want to get stuck in the black role. She wasn't TRYING to be cruel. Her mother was obligated to make her daughter be truthful and was going to keep crashing in on her. Sarah Jane felt stifled, threatened, trapped, so she had to keep running. It's not fair to say she was coldhearted, she was desperate. TRAGIC.

  • I break down and cry every single time Saraj Jane silently mouths "Mama".

  • poor old woman

  • gosh, i can't believe it... is there any prejudice so strong in our lives/society that it could make us desert our mother this way?

  • That Bitch... I hate to even say or type that word but she really struck a nerve. How in the world could you treat your mom in such matter....

  • @fkelsy I wanted to say that about her myself, she was a real bitch!

  • @fkelsy she's not a bitch, she's a very troubled girl. and i can't blame her. she was growing up resenting who she was, as a result of society back then. when people are angry inside they take that resentment out on other people. I feel for annie. it's not right for a child to treat their mother that way. but i can see where sarah jane is coming from.

  • @fkelsy I agree, speaking as a biracial woman I would NEVER even think to treat my mother that way. Growing up people didn't like my mom because she's mexican and I grew up in a primarily black neighborhood. But I'd rather get beat up than either hear someone say something rotten about my mom. I'm not ashamed of who I am, I am who I am and nothing can ever change that. My mother is blood and my life line. So it's hard to see someone is so ashamed...

  • Sarah Jane is such an ungrateful, mean little bitch! I want to punch her face in.

  • @34099832 Um... So, if you were born back then, you would allow other people to make you feel ashamed of who God made you to be? SMH.

  • @reygirl 1 I was born very light skinned to both black parents and the only think i would pass for white in the 1950's would be on jobs because black people couldnt get equal rights. that was like a dis. baby girl im black and proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i wouldnt pass other that because thats denying my identity and im perfectly 100% happy with my race which is black. get it straight

  • @34099832 I've seen your videos, and you don't look as though you could pass for white. You're too dark-skinned.

  • @harriettewinslow : I agree!!

  • @34099832 Well, you can't say that because you were not in their shoes. It's easy to say that now looking back in retrospect with the rights you have, but when you are treated as a second class citizen or worse, and not even a human being and your life is about suffering and living in fear and you have a chance to escape that life, you probably would. All of this "black pride" is awfully cozy now that you know what it's like to not be spat on because of it.

  • @GirlieRat That's what I say....Mulattos were shunned in both black and white communities if anyone knew what they were...if you could pass for white that's what alot of people did

  • @34099832 , True . True , DNA has proved it , like it or not ! Africa !

  • @34099832 ok well this is a MOVIE so we dont need your 2 sense...

  • @34099832 is a shame because the way black people were treated back then some felt they had 2 lie about being black

  • @lakersfan1974 They did. But it was either pretend to be white or get killed. And if you were obviously black you had to be careful of where you went, what you said, who you talked to, etc.

  • This is my favorite part of the movie...where Annie sees Sarah Jane for the last time...so sad!

  • dag this is deep...

  • I really feel sorry for Annie in that scene where Sarah Jane walks away from her without a care.

  • @34099832

    Would you like a cookie?

  • @34099832 wow u wanna medal?

  • dragonflynoir10 looks latino.
