Serena played great, but i love to see Serena lose it's so funny because she really really hates to lose. Well, she's a fierce competitor and won't surrender. You see the expressions on her face when she badly wants to win. She's also mentally tough and very intimidating on court to other players. That's why it's nice to see when other players beat her.
serena really had to be on her toes with maria i dont think serena will ever loses to maria again...lol the last time she lost to maria was the end of the year tournament in 04 finals...but serena was injured ...I pick serena tho...I love to see maria lose..its soo funny cause she dose fight to the end..
This proves that serena is an absolutely better player than sharapova in all ways! this was Maria's best year and Serena beat her fair and square. GO SERENA YOU ARE GOAT!
what a quality match.... the sooner maria starts playing to her best ability the better - the first 4/5 months of 2008 showed what a star she was - she was the most dominating player until she got injured - you don't see any dominating player anymore - presently the rankings would say that wozniacki, clijsters and zvonareva are dominating - but only one can dominate - maria you can kick there ass any day
Maria is slowly rising to challenge Serena's game. Unlike in the year 2007 where she looks afraid of her. But now she is really stepping it up on her. She's jsut not taking chances. And Serena knows that Sharapova is quickly catching up.
Does anyone realize how GREAT womens tennis would be if both these incredible players were consistently healthy and at the top of their games? It would be like Sharapova no.1 then next week Serena no.1 It would definetly be epic.
@tennismon I'd throw Venus in there as well. Venus is a far superior athlete when compared to Maria. She has a better serve and is a much better mover around the court than Maria. If these 3 players (Serena, Venus and Maria) along with Kim and Justine were all consistently healthy and at their peak, women's tennis would be worth watching again rather than the sorry and sad state its in.
@hiu1787 I didnt mean to not include Venus, but Venus and Serena have already had a long standing consistent rivalry. (1999-2004) When womens tennis was still powerful. It has so much potential now, I wish all the big players were healthy, I mean who wants to watch Wozniacki vs Radwanska lol.
@tennismon I gatcha...and yes indeed, Wozniacki vs Radwanska -- complete yawn fest!!!!!!! Women's tennis is a lost cause when the more accomplished players (Serena, Justine, Venus, Kim) finally decides to call it quits. I'm not mentioning Maria cuz she's only 23, so hopefully she'll have several more productive years playing tennis, right now she's the only hope women's tennis has for the future.
OMG, this rivalry is just a child abuse case at this point... Serena always wins because she's simply too athletic for Sharapova! Sharapova is a poor mover,,, im suprised she's even won 3 slams
@JAYLOVE47 well there's no doubt Serena is the better player. But Sharapova has (or at least had pre-surgery) probably the toughest mental game in the circuit. Coupled with that epic backhand and some good serving, that's really all it takes. She deservedly won all of those three majors.
I love this match, watch it all the time. Serena is so incredible. Sharapova as always looks stiff and moves so poorly. Serena is beating her so badly at one point she turns so pink I wanted to pick up the phone and call the trainer...lol. Poor Sharapov, when ever she hits the court with Serena she knows she is going to get beat. The question is just how bad.
Sharapova has good service technique here, but this video really shows the difference between Serena and Sharapova. Serena's technique on serve is so perfectly fluid and effortless that it makes Sharapova's service look clunky in comparison.
serena's taking the ball early, on the run here, as well as moving super-fast = good tennis. both players who get a lot of points from serves and attacking returns, yet serena does these things better than maria. maria is a little more consistent on g-strokes, but serena really exposed her movement by mixing up down-the-line and cross-court shots - that really is her thing, though; looking for opportunities to wrong-foot opponents.
This win was impressive for Serena seeing as how well and dominant Sharapova was at that time in 2008. She had just won the Aussie and was on a roll.

@ImJuanTJuanT yeah maybe but you have to think that the crushing loss she had to serena in 07 would be floating in her mind
