@geonerd Sorry geonerd it is the low air pressure buzzer making all the noise, the truck had been sitting awhile so it was low...when a truck is that old it's hard to track down all the small leaks, it will hold a tank for about 8 hrs, after that it's pretty much empty unless the engine is running with the compressor pressurizing every 15 to 20 mins or so....
@freighthog3511 Read the previous comments and it tells you what they use to start. Diesel engines are compression engines so they don't need spark plugs, they compress the air so much inside the cylinder (15:1 to 20:1) that the air gets so hot from being compressed that when the injector sprays the fuel, it instantly ignites, unlike a gas engine that needs a spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture.
@healedmichael Heavy duty diesels do not have glow plugs, only smaller diesels such as in pickups have glowplugs. Heavy duty diesels do have options such as a block heater and ether assistance to aid in starting, but there are no glow plugs.
@malibuwagon350 well i grew up with small diesel engines so i didn't know heavy diesels did not have glowplugs thanx for the reply now i know again thanx malibuwagon350
@healedmichael No problem HMike, the reason pickup diesels have the glowplugs and heated intakes etc. is because the general public wants to buy a brand new vehicle and not have to deal with it coughing, cranking, and sputtering on a cold day.. heavy duty diesels usually have a trucker or construction worker or someone with experience knowing what to do to get them going on a cold day.
@malibuwagon350 i dont mean to be a party pooper, but the mercedes mde4000, mbe 900 has something called a grid heater. and the new dd-15s as well i think
@halosux4life It's ok, your not a party pooper, some of the heavy duty diesels may have a grid heater in the intake to help warm the incoming air true, I never said they did not...I was answering healedmichael about his question on using glow plugs, in which I told him heavy duty diesels dont have glow plugs, but do offer other cold start aids (ether injection, block heaters, and yes heater grids in the intakes) :)
@WiredrawnMurder45 Well the FLD can be fitted with numerous different types of engines from the factory. The most common are from Detroit Diesel (Series 60 - 14.0 liter and 12.7 liter and 11.1 liter), Caterpillar (C12 and C13 and C15 series, and 3406E 14.6 liter), and Cummins (N11 and N14 Plus and Celect series). The FLD itself can be fitted to have ether assistance and a block heater to help, but the rest is specific to engine manufacturer on starting ability's.
@Iam18yearsolddddd That's because diesel engined cars and light trucks have glow plugs that activate when the ignition is turned to the on position before cranking below certain temperatures, heavy duty diesel engines do not have glow plugs, but sometimes have ether assistance (otherwise known as starting fluid) that helps with cold starts.
I've owned 3 diesels and have been around a lot of diesel.. but WTF happened at like 00:52 seconds when the truck decided it wanted to run right? I've never seen that before.
@weiserbud67 The diesel fuel starts to wax at a lower temperatures and not all the cylinders are firing and the injectors start to come online slowly and the cylinders start firing making it smooth out.
HOt Damn beacuse from 0:43-0:52 it sounds like the 496 chevy biggy i had in my camaro..... but it will sound like that for ever not like the semi that evens out after a few seconds but Sh** i missed that engine.. wish i hadent sold it.......i am going to try to upload a video of that engine runnin on her pretty soon but umm Nice Frigh =)
when my cousins freightliner fld it was a 2000 though, wouldn't crank up i would have to flip the hi range and low range switch on the shifter up and down
@malibuwagon350 well the company he works for basically buys problems off of other people,so in this particular truck somehow some way the starter was connected to the transmission, don't ask me how. lol
Stupid buzzer sorta runs the whole video, don't ya think? :(

@wiredrawnmurder45 its not the freightliner it's the detroit engine. And its normal in cold temps for a detroit to sound like that.
freighthog3511 6 months ago
do all Freightliners suck to cold start or is it just the '98 FLD series?

@malibuwagon350 it had some hard time starting for a huge truck, you have cars with diesel engine that start easier
Iam18yearsolddddd 8 months ago
