  • My experience with these two games is interesting. I never played a D&D type game before Dragon Age and I got bored with it after an hour. I then moved on to Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale and absolutely fell in love with the Infinity Engine. Something about Dragon Age to me feels very generic, I might not like the engine or the fact that I played in on the xbox 360, but I could not get into Dragon Age and still can't.

  • Baldur's Gate is still better.

  • Dragon Age: Origins was about a quarter the size of Baldur's Gate 2, with far less exploration. In DA:O All the sidequests were mercenary work, the levels were on rails and not as large as they looked. The plot was barely there, more a string of events. Still a good game though, I'd give it 7/10 and BG2 a 9/10. It just dissapointed me because the comparisons between the two games got my hopes too high. Both games are full of bugs and cheap ways to kill dragons, though. :P

  • DA is a modern revamped version of Baldur's Gate with a whole new world and plot. Lets not forget that Baldur's Gate is part of the Forgotten Realms universe while DA is something totally new and original. Both are great, but cherish and respect the predecessors of epic gaming

  • To me Dragon Age feels like a completely dumbed down version of Baldur's Gate. The magic system I felt was lacking, battles were cumbersome, and there was no real strategy involved despite have nearly the same combat system as Baldur's Gate. I appreciate what Bioware tried to do with DA but I guess it didn't really hit the spot with me. I played Dragon Age probably about a year ago and Baldur's Gate 2 for the first time two years ago. I consider it to be my favorite game of all time.

  • I consider myself to be a BG "purist" but I'm not gonna rip on DA. DA is a much MUCH more evolved version of BG, I sometimes think almost "too" evolved in the sense that it is hard even for me sometimes to actually see the common points between the two. But also in that sense it's a different game. So there really is no purpose in attacking DA or any game for that matter, simply because "it's not BG". By the way DA is a great game too, it's just that it doesn't make me feel like BG managed to do

  • To be honest, I think Dragon Age Origins is more like knights of the old republic rather than Baldur's Gate

  • respect! for the playlist of music respect twice!

  • @Talisman113

I'm not going to lie, I sometimes play this video in the background just to listen to the music.

  • Character Creations: DA>BG

    Leveling up: DA=BG

    Graphics: DA=BG

    World Map: DA<BG

    Gamplay: DA=BG

    Story: DA=BG

Both of these games are not only great but legendary. Dragon Age had a perfect trilogy in Origins with the main campaign itself, Awakening, and Witch Hunt. Baldur's Gate is also a perfect trilogy with the first game, Shadows of Alm,and Throne of Bhaal. I hope Bioware leave EA for a better partner because EA is slowly killing them. They need to partner up with Bethesda!

  • Baldur's Gate will always be my number 1 favorite game of all time. I have yet to find a game as fun, story driven, and as well put together as BG.

  • If you told me that DA:O was the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, I would have believed you. DA:O was impressive in its own right, and it had as much potential as the original Baldur's Gate - except DA:2 SUCKED. While it was a decent game (relative to all other games), relative to names that it HAD to live up to (ie. Baldur's Gate 2) it SUCKED big time.

  • The one thing this video is missing is you re-rolling 100 times until you get the right stats in Baldur's Gate.

  • @GamingFundamentals LAMO, yeah done THAT alot of times.

Got to the point if I am making a paladin, wont settle for less than 36 points to play with (yes, I scored sets of stats by how many points I could derive from them. I am such a nerd.)

  • I have played the baldur's gate serie for the past 10 years, completing it 2-3 times a year and each time really feels like a whole new adventure. I will still be playing it at the same pace in 10 years. I don't even feel compelled to try playing dragon age after watching that video, I just want to start a new bg2 game!

  • btw, what is it with the huge hands in the DA character designs?

  • I feel like the Dragon Age Franchise has potential but it hasn't been fully realized yet. It's only just scratched the surface of its world and the overall imagination level is much lower than in Baldur's gate. I'm still holding out for Dragon Age 3.

  • Baldur's Gate I & II: Legendary

    Dragon Age I: good

    Dragon Age II: god awful

  • baldurs gate hands down

  • Theatrical voice acting and dialogs, amazing and original story, unique quests and characters, brilliant gameplay, etc.

I will always remember Kangaxx the Lich, Lord Jierdan Firkraag and the Drow town.

I played DA:O twice. However, I can hardly even remember what was the main story about.

  • This is actually pretty good comparison between the two games, made me realize how well BG has aged: Graphics still look good (don't need 3D to look good) and gameplay is fluid, not to mention difficulty level which is just right. One major gripe I have with DA is that EVERY battle plays out the same way, whereas in BG you were forced to switch tactics because your enemies had different sorts of immunities and special abilities.

Still, both games are great and worth playing.

  • DA:O is a great game, but the setting... meh!

After DA 3, Bioware should go back to make D&D games with a Wizards of the Coast's license.

Not necessarily a sequel to Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate (hard to make a sequel to the ending of Throne of Bhaal, anyway).

And using 4E rules (which are perfect for a videogame adaptation).

    Just imagine...

Every game of the series should be about a different D&D setting:

Forgotten Realms (obvious first choice), Eberron, Dark Sun, Dragonlance...

  • Baldur's Gate II was the best game ever.

DA:O was an amazing game, nonetheless. Awakening was pretty good too.

DA II was quite mediocre, though...

  • Baldur's Gate 2 was so much better in ANY level of comparison !

  • I'm playing Baldur's Gate (using the Tutu mod) for the first time and I'm really enjoying it.I'm having a hard time controlling a party of 6 instead of just my character so I'm hoping the more I play the better I get.My party dies alot and it's set on core rules so maybe I need more practice.

  • Well, I'm playing the first Baldur's gate now. Well, I engoy it! And I didn't play Dragon Age, but I think Baldur's gate 1 is better.

  • Anyway, what makes a game great is your own point of view, not the others. If you like it, it's because it's a masterpiece for you. What matters if someone says it's worse? That's irrelevant.

  • These games can't be compared because one is gold and one is shit... You should know which is which.

  • 1:21 broken

  • DaO great game, Da2... not so much, heres hoping 3 salves rather than salts those wounds. The Old games come back once again, Baldurs gates spiritual successor and Deus Ex's, they both have BIG shoes to fill.

In BG and Do's favor is both have amazing modding communities behind them who add thrilling new content and that brings people back time and again. (See flirt and banter packs for BGII and you can never do without them)

  • Baldurs Gate owns Dragon Age: Origins any time.

My favourate RPGs would be Baldurs Gate 1&2, The Witcher and DA: O, but still, DA: O has nothing on Witcher and nothing can stand against Baldurs Gate the PC RPG Classic. But alrdy DA ruined itself by greed. Dragon Age 2 was a total bullcrap not a RPG. It was 3rd person action game with Sims elements not RPG...actually yeah. DA2 might be considered as Sims 3 only it has action in it.

  • @MrMetsakurat Planescape: Torment is even better than Baldur's Gate. Check it out!

  • @Owneador1337 Ive played it and yes, Planescape was a really good RPG, but Baldurs Gate is better in my opinion.

  • @Owneador1337 Ive played a lot RPGs. Kotor 1&2, NWN 1&2, ID 1&2, Oblivion and Fable(which are more like hack n slash games actually), Fallout 1;2;3 and i know i forgot something, but Baldurs Gate, The Witcher and DA: O are just my favourates atm.

  • @MrMetsakurat I love the Witcher, too. Planescape: Torment is just a more immersive Baldur's Gate with an incredible story and characters. Think of all the roster being as original as Misc or Xan; no persky Imoens or Jaheiras! There's only 8 characters and you find it really hard to pick out 6 out of there. Enough said!

  • If you know Baldur's Gate1 and 2, you know great PC gaming - if you know Dragon Age 1 and 2 you know multiformat roleplaying is not roleplaying at all!

  • i love dragon age origins my fav game ..i hear is like a sequel of baldure's gate .. i will try baldur'e gate too :D

  • Dragon Age is good, but you can't beat Baldur's Gate with it.

  • I'm a sucker for a BG vs DA debate. I think that it's fine to remember how you felt the first time you played BG all those many moons ago, but don't lose sight of how great DA is. The one thing I like to tell people about Baldurs Gate is that the backgrounds are handpainted which makes that game even classier. A youtube comment can't sum up what I want to say about these games. I think that BG purists who hate DA are idiots, and I think people who won't give BG a serious go are also idiots.

  • @toonuraccoon I played Baldur's Gate for the first time last year (2010), and it was fantastic. Now I'm playing Baldur's Gate 2 for the first time. I think these games are better than Dragon Age in almost every way, even though I liked Dragon Age: Origins very much, and it's what led me to try Baldur's Gate in the first place.

  • @toonuraccoon The only superiority Dragon Age Origins has over Baldur's Gate is the graphic engine, in terms of storyline, gameplay (DnD ruleset), script (dialogue etc.) I'd always choose Baldur's Gate. :)

  • @toonuraccoon

As a Baldur's Gate 'purist' perhaps, I feel they have wasted opportunities with Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age. But I enjoyed the unique gameplay Baldur's Gate offered, the vastness of the world. You just can't do that in the same way in their desire to keep doing first-person and 3D.

I enjoyed the immersiveness and the story. The new games lack all of this.

  • @CrimsonRefractions Neverwinter Nights' campaigns are just "example" modules. The purpose of the game is to be played online, like a MMORPG, with modules made by users.

I've played it online in servers with dozens of people at the same time and heavy modding (you have to eat, drink, sleep, etc). It's definately the deepest MMORPG around there. People actually take roleplaying seriously and play their character accordingly. It's very time consuming and requires some patience, but it's awesome!

  • @Owneador1337

Exactly, NWN is a tool to play tabletop AD&D online, whereas Baldur's Gate was an expansive immersive game.

I would have liked NWN as that, they marketed it as a game. Turned out to be a tool. A pretty nice tool at that, but it just wasn't Baldur's Gate - hence the disappointment.

  • @CrimsonRefractions Well, I guess you have a point. Still, Baldur's Gate and Planescape are good enough to be replayed every few years.

  • @toonuraccoon I Absolutely Agree with you.

What bothers me the most it's that many of the "BG Purists" talk as if DA was made for kids compared to how hard BG is and that it's nothing compared to Older Games, While I have been playing RPGs for over 20 years, and DAO is one of my favorite RPGs(tied with BG1 and beaten by BG2).

I hate those fucking idiots, they make us older gamers look like senile fools who just insult anything that is modern.

  • @toonuraccoon has it aged well tho? I mean most people who love BG2 played it back in the day but it's often harder for people to get into old games they didnt play around when they came out

  • @IcyScythe Actually BG2 is timeless. What I find to be true of this game is that as the characters/creatures are on a small scale, and as such the graphics hold up very well because the level of detail you need for them is allready present. Not to mention the superb voice acting that is better than a large percentage of games made today. The music and sound is also incredible and helps fill the world up.

I think that this makes it incredibly easy for baldurs gate to be played by newer players.

  • @toonuraccoon cool I'll try it then thanks :)

  • @IcyScythe Great! just fyi Good Old Games have BG2 for $9.99, I bought this in July, and I allready own 4 other copies...crazy. It works flawlessly with win7 if that is what you are using. I got it again because a digital copy I can take on my external HD is invaluable for travel.

You're going to have a lot of fun. And if you haven't palyed Dragon Age, do that to :)

  • @toonuraccoon I love Dragon age move and i think its simply becuase i played it first. Same for people who love baldurs gate more. And yeah ive played and completed both baldurs gate games, i fucking love them! i can't play TOB without Acension though xD

  • @ItIsTheInvisibleMan Fascinating fact for you. Guess who wrote and coded Ascension?

David Gaider, the creator of the Dragon Age setting.

One time programmer on the Baldur's Gate Team.

  • @ariandynas I know right, he wasn't satisfied with the rushed ending of TOB. Took him liek four months or something didn't it? Love how ***SPOOILLERRRR*** Irenicus returns and you can turn Bodhi on him. I always thought the end boss was far too easy but with Acension its perhaps one of the hardest fights in video game history.

  • @ItIsTheInvisibleMan Nah, the return of Irenicus was a mod called Redemption, which could be combined with a mod called Turnabout to bring back permanently dead characters for the fight like Yoshimo and Gorion.

  • @toonuraccoon exactly all the bg fans raging on da almost made me not want to play bg, hopefully i ended up playing it.

  • Baldurs Gate II is the best game from Bioware and ive played em all (apart from Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 2). Dragon Age is nowhere NEAR the level of greatness of BG II.

  • @dageezerboi BG>DAO>DAA>DA2

  • If you had a point - you forgot to actually include it in the video.

  • "Dragon Age 2 will be out in a few days. Oughta be grand!" Lol you better remove this last line of the description... Sadly DA2 is a complete piece of shit compared to these past games....

  • Ah, nice vid. Haven't played BG Since I was 14, I have to give it another go soon.

  • Nice video and nice ending to it. You could have compared the characters.

  • I feel like beating BG after reading the story of this video even through i hasn't play it yet tehe

  • I loved DA:O and the BG series...I can't say the same for Dragon Age 2, though.

IMO, DA2 is an enjoyable enough game, but reeks of wasted potential. It feels very rushed.

  • @lecroissant exactly, maybe 2 more years would have enriched it to a higher level, and maybe would not cause deja-vu allover the game

  • what is that armor at 2:57?!?!?!

  • Never played The Baldur's Gate series, but after watching this I may give it a whirl!

Also I must ask - what is the music during the opening of this video?

  • @Oliver90909

Hope you enjoy, Baldur's Gate is a brilliant series.

And all music is listed at the end of the movie. Very first song that plays is the 'Watcher's Keep' theme from Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhall.

  • @Carthane i was wondering how it felt so familiar

  • @Oliver90909

It is a series vastly superior to Dragon Age even.

  • @Oliver90909

notice that the party at Baldurs Gate is made of 6 caracthers... you can get much greater versatibility... like ALWAYS having a thief on your party, plus a mage. Then you can have BESIDES the mage, also a cleric... and maybe three tanks!

  • @Oliver90909

Hope you enjoy them, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are some of my absolute favorite games. Once you've finished them normally be sure and replay them again with mods later for additional challenge (Ascension, Sword Coast Stratagems etc.).

  • Comment removed

  • @Oliver90909 BG2 is **STILL** the best single player rpg ever made... nothing comes close.

  • Baldur's Gate is probably one of the best games ever made. It was a near impossibility for DA:O to be as good and... Well, it's not but it's still a really good game.

  • @bullo247 baldurs gate was never one of the best games ever made.. but it was definetly way better then the second par

  • @IBOUGHTYAMOM

certainly most people wont agree that, because of irenicus, BG2 is always better than BG1

  • @bullo247 I prefer to think of it this way. Without Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age Origins wouldn't exist.
