Dude, I get your point, but some people are indeed simply "cute." We have different levels of attractiveness... For a girl, there's cute, pretty, beautiful, gorgeous. As for hot, that 's just a quick way of saying someone is both cute and sexy. LOL. You've honestly never called a woman you were attracted to "cute"? What else are we supposed to say, "Attractive" for everyone? A cute girl is not always a beautiful girl for me. They can't be on the same level.

I do call my boyfriend cute once in a while, but only if he's currently acting the part - being puppy-like for whatever reason he does that. It's more of a behavioral descriptor for me than a purely aesthetic thing.

I don't know about small, more like insulted. If you want to get psychoanalytical you could probably trace it back to my father, who used it when I was angry at him back when I was young as opposed to taking me seriously. In my head cute = can't be taken seriously.
