  • This was the best because it was live, no rehearsals, no recordings, just walked up to the mike and brought everyone in the arena right to him. He wasn't the Prince of Motown for nothing! The greatest ever

  • Marvin invented Swagg!!!

  • Smokin hot..

  • Now Thats #SWAG !

  • The ONE who changed the "sound" of The National Anthem forever. Marvin Gaye put SOUL and SEXINESS into this song. Miss You Marvin!!!

  • I agree, this is one of the best National Anthems I've ever heard. Whitney's is better do to the power and rang in her vocals tho. How ever style goes to Marvin.

  • the only other comparison was Whitney Houston..............angels in heavens choir!!!!!

  • best ever

  • marvin just made love to the national anthem.......lol

  • Marvin show you how to own a song, beautiful

  • This is bullshit. The song that represents are country isn't supposed to be sung with your own spin on it. Its not about you and your career.

  • @jyou1651 You don't know music you JANKY ASS COUNTRY FUCK.

  • Now thats class!

  • Incredible....

  • I'd rock Them Aviators

  • I miss him soO much & Whitney's tragic death makes me miss him that much more--Sounds like a concert rather than an NBA event--BEST RENDITION of the National Anthem HANDS DOWN!!

  • The epitome of soul!

  • This was so groovy lol!!! Oh Marvin Gaye!!!

  • Damn.....I dont think the anthem has ever been sung with so much swag before. Incredible.

  • Best to sing it, Marvin, Whitney and Beyonce!!!!

  • @Mrs1Bonds , I don't like this version at all, but I agree about Whitney and Beyonce, and would add Cher.

  • @MrVidaeverdade You half to be caucasian which means you have absolutely no soul at all. Stick with Merl Haggart and the boys "BUBBY".

  • @Mrs1Bonds agree...but not Beyonce by herself , with destiny child they had a cute version

  • TWO OF THE BEST THAT LET'S US KNOW WHAT THIS COUNTRY MEANS TO ALL PEOPLE--- AND ESPECIALLY TO PEOPLE OF COLOR...

  • I can't put into words, how much talented Marvin Gaye was, its just amazing what he did to this song. There will never be an artist that can be so creative like Marvin Gaye, RIP...

  • Like the USSC once declared they can't define Porn (look up the case) but KNOW it when they see it,...you can't truly define Soul but you KNOW IT when you see it.

This video and how it eventually WON over the entire arena,...they KNEW (American) SOUL when they saw it.

Big Ups to the Man Marvin.

  • Brings back the memories. Best creative Anthem ever IMHO. We used to play this AND stand for it before NBA 2K/Madden tourney finals lol.

  • LETS PLAY "WHERES WALDO" LOL LIKE IF YOU FOUND HIM!!!! (hint before the 1:00 mark)

  • @noiseonlyplease dum azz comment

  • This is to my mind the only time in my long memory of sporting events in which the singing of the anthem somehow headlined the "main event", in this case the NBA Finals. After Marvin sat down one could imagine people heading for the exits.

  • 1:32 there goes the orgasim

  • @noiseonlyplease, I think I understand your comment. LOL

  • When he sang the anthem, I nearly lost my mind lol with his fine self.

  • There was at least 20 niggas fuckin in the audience when Marvin started singing this shit...thats my nigga

  • That's what I call Patriotic Soul

  • check out Rhema Marvin i love her she is awsome im becoming like her i sang at a restraunt i got to one line and the croud went WILD!!! one persone SCREAMEP!!!!!

  • the best..

  • It doesn't get much better than this. #goosebumps

  • And one of the finest

  • He gave this SOUL,,,,MARVIN IS TRUELY MISSED,,,,,,

  • I remember 2 days specifically that artists I loved died. Elvis was the first. Marvin was the second. Both deaths so senseless, so heartbreaking.

  • Amazingggggggggggg!!!!!

  • Thats how you wear aviators Jay Z and Kanye dont got nothin on MG

  • The absolute best to do it!!! R.I.P.

  • you see, when it comes to singing the "National Athem" all you ever heard before this was just....okay hurry up sing it so we can sit down...... but this version.. shit ... let's hear some more. ....!

  • To Mr. Yankeedoodle,I'm sorry, but you don't know great music when you hear it! I haven't heard any of your so called Top 10 versions of this song except for Whitney"s ; besides this man's.And he took it to another level that will not ever be touch!!!

  • Damn I've never wanted to listen to anyone sing the national anthem, but M.G just set the bar for me. Amazingly sexy! Even the crowd back then knew what was and is good!

  • This video is the ultimate soulless-robot detector.

  • Marvin Gaye song the hell out of that song, with a name like Yankee what do we expect, go take off those skinny jeans

  • @yankeedoodlecajun we certainly disagree as Marvin's ande Jimi Hendrix' r my favorite ones but then...

  • @yankeedoodlecajun So Marvin's is on the Top 10 Anthems of all time in your opinion? Nice.

You just failed at trying to criticize him.

  • @Stefandurrr No, top 10 WORST. Thank you very much . . .

  • i can't even

  • He was so humble when he walked out there.

  • Whitney's version was put on wax......this version is stunning wow..only Marvin could pull this off.

  • I've seen this dozens of times over the years. It still sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. His interpretation is superb, but the way the audience feels it too, really adds to the experience of watching this video. It is just an excellent performance - imo perfect, in fact.

  • Marvin Gaye has always been a very thoughtful, introspective, and feeling person evidenced by the feelings superbly expressed in "WHAT'S GOIN ON" / " LET'S GET IT ON " and "HERE MY DEAR" and that same feeling was simply imparted into his uniquely beautiful version / the N A HAS NEVER BEEN SANG SO " COOL & BEAUTIFUL " by anybody / CLASSIC !

  • This is beautiful.....

  • GOD BLESS MARVIN GAYE

    GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES

    GOD BLESS THE EARTH

  • He nailed it! Pure perfection.

  • First time in my lfie, i felt proud to be american...even though i'm not a citizen

  • did they REALLY play that beat in the background? *falls out*

  • @SkibopDaSequel I think the beat and quiet synth really adds to the arrangement.

  • no one and i mean no one does it like marvin this song will never be done ant better by any one in the world

  • Everytime I hear this, it brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful.....God, he is so missed.

  • I love to hear Marvin Gaye sing any song including the Star Spangled Banner, may he Rest In Peace. One of your #1 fans.

  • amusing!

  • @cybermaniac116 how is this amusing??

  • Never heard the "Star Spangled Banner" sang so sexily!! Love IT!!!

  • BEST ONE EVER

  • now a days performances are more like "the higher i can scream, the best i am"...zut!

  • u can make luv on dis one...i mean I CAN, for sure ^^^

  • Best rendition ever.

  • Who'd ever thought you could make love to the singing of the national anthem;)

  • I remember seeing this live, what a blessing!

  • @Gluchyon Tell more, please!!! I'd love to hear about the audience's reaction as the song progressed, and after it. When he hit that "red glare" part, it seemed to me like it had enough power behind that to move the building over a foot. I would love to hear your recollections.

  • here

  • Goosebumps when the people finally start to clap!

  • @bannadave that's the definition of a soul clap right there!

  • Marvin Gaye’s is the artist that I most identify with.

I tried emulate his music earlier in my life.

    This brother was so sensual…

His Music did provide sexual healing for many of us during lovemaking

The first time I made love, “I want You” was playing on my cassette deck.

His music helped me, and HEALED during some very trying times……

These songs are dedicated to Nicci. Girl you were my first love

I think of you often….Thank You for allowing me in your life

  • Thats classic right there

  • classic !!!!!!!!! not staged

  • We can thank Luther Vandross for this "Classic"... Marvin was nervous about doing this after being out of the country for awhile...asked Luther to do it the night before, he was 'afraid' so Marvin's Legend Grew!!!

    Gary Holt

  • That was hot! God you are missed Marvin! R.I.P

  • I believe this performance was the first video that VH-1 ever played.

  • 12 people are terrorists.

  • You go Marvin Gaye....you are sorely missed!!!

  • N I mean nooooooooo 1 has top this National Anthem

  • thought that was pretty homesexual

  • this is the BEST rendition of The National Anthem i have EVER heard! Make you wanna dance to it...lol.

  • yessssssssssss love it

  • Third time watching this in 10 mins.

  • god this is beautiful

  • Marvin Gaye should be placed on the hundred dollar bill and when ever you spend it , it plays this song. Whenever America gets in a world conflict we will just play this sexy ass version of the national anthem and the opposition will then bend over and allow full insertion into its anal cavity resolving any previous misunderstanding creating world peace at last

  • @jwp41790 America doesn't want peace. Peace isn't profitable.

  • @crazybbob o=Off topic, but yeah.

  • outstanding

  • love song to america

  • The only thing that could make this better is John Mayer playing guitar along with this! That would be bananas!

  • ITS FUCKED UP WHEN YOU WANNA FUCK TO THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!

  • THIS IS THE BEST WAY I HAVE EVER HEARD THIS SHIT SUNG! DAMN MARVIN PUT THAT SHIT DOWN!

  • man I'm horny now.. so long YouTube and thanks Marvin... off to a pornsite now.. lol

  • Goddamn that gave me goosebumps. Thats how you rock a house! And its just our Anthem, not a concert. That is the power to move people.

  • lawd lawd lawd

  • He was accompanied by the Marine Corp's (forget their whole title) Marvin had been out of the country for several years...tried to get Luthor Vandross to take his place...he didn't ... the rest is history!

    Gary

  • He was accompanied by the Marine Corp's (forget their whole title) Marvin had been out of the country for several years...tried to get Luthor Vandross to take his place...he didn't ... the rest is history!

  • 12 douche bags...

  • gonzo from the bunk was here

  • i rememba watchn this performance at halftime all of us in the house was going krazy man we were showing out...it still gives me tha goosebumps today listening to marvin sing dis song...you were tha best!!

  • Only Marvin could make patriotism sexy as hell.

  • greatest moment in american history

  • My wife and I just fucked to this performance, and I'm not even married.

  • @gregarious24 wow how innapropriate.

  • I just came!~

  • This was my moms generation but I have to say hearing it as I grew up made me fall in love with this man. It was terrible how his life ended. Only he can make the National Anthem sound sexy as hell!!! NEVER again will it EVER sound like this again.. SEXY AS HELL!!!

  • Classic!

  • Truly sad that this would turn out to be one of the last times he would perform as it turned out before he was shot and killed by his father. He probably would have otherwise continued to crank out hits well into the '80s and probably the '90s. Aside from Whitney Houston's Super Bowl XXV rendition (that actually was released as a single and went to #1 in 1991), it's still considered to be the best rendition ever done.

  • @Wallyhorse I'm sorry, but Whiney Houston's version IMO doesn't hold a candle to this.

  • nobody but marvin gaye would sing the national anthem like that w so much soul and passion.

  • My clothes fell off before the end of this

  • I have never heard a better rendition of it. The heart, the soul - just beautiful

  • watched this over and over again . . . jz luv it. bet the crowd enjoyed it too . . .

  • Terrible

  • Instant Classic

  • ayo statue of liberty just dropped her pussy real quick nigga!

  • When you think about how intimidating the National Anthem is to most professional singers, this demonstrates Marvin's supreme confidence & genius.

  • I love this version, but I think there is some hypocrisy from some ppl who may like it cause anyone who changed the arrangement like that today, even if it turned out this good, would still be raked over the coals. That said, hail Marvin Gaye!

  • @thej762000 ...well if that sounds ''like ass'' to you you're definitely on hallucinogenics ....

  • Let's get it on!!

  • WOW!!! How great, he sang it with more meaning than I heard from so many others....gave me goose bumps!

  • Love it! Proud to be an American! Marvin is the man!

  • the best i have ever heard !

  • he owned that!!! wow, the crowd was sooo into that performance

  • he owned that!!!

  • I wish I was there, Marvin you too sexy

  • listen to those sistas in the crowd hootin and hollerin

  • I like it sung right but i dont mind this for some reason lol

  • i get misty every time .....

  • I'm having sex to this later

gives me a boner just listening to it

    no homo.

  • @apetheape9 lol....

  • What a talent. You ask me what soul is? Listen to this!

  • Best Ever!!!! :D

  • Whoever chose that backing track should have been fired on the spot. It's sounds like he's singing a cappella and there happens to be a porn movie playing at the same time.

  • @melissamaples I don't think you're aware of this but that backing track is how a lot of pop music sounded like back then in the 80s

  • gonzo from bunker hill was here

  • Mr. Smoooooooth...hands down awesome!

  • I'LL PIGGY BACK...THIS SHOULD BE PLAYED AT EVERY SPORTING EVENT...PERIOD! WITHOUT QUESTION, THE GREATEST RENDITION EVER!!!

  • more soul in his little finger than in xtina's whole body

  • Marvin had Swagger when there was no swagger he nailed it. not even Jennifer Hudson id good but not Marvin Gaye or Whitney Huston good. Still gives me chills!!

  • No one can sing like Marvin.... so smooth and so right!

  • Then jennifer Hudson!!!!!

  • At a superbowl party yesterday we touched on the best national Anthems and THIS was my choice HANDS DOWN!!!!

  • best rendition ever marvin was a true pro. none of this elongated falsetto bullshit that the singers now do to cover up glaring weakness in their voices. rest in peace marvin gaye.

  • one of the greatest singers of all time!! back when talent didnt need support!

  • @imarkit This should be played every year @ the NBA all star games, in his honor because it was the best. No one has top this:-)

  • @5mytoy amen to that! Its about time we start showing the new ones what was, is, and always will be the best! This way they have a clue to how good it really was. If all they hear is the crap they hear, then thats all they will end up creating! Time to go back to the old school when great was great without apology!

  • @imarkit Now see what I mean! "Marvin Gaye's" Anthem should be played at ALLGAMES, because Christina made a MESS of it last night at the Super Bowl:) Omg, what they are doing is getting bids to sing every year to try and out do the one before, and they all sound like hell:) Well Whitney did a good job on hers once (Chuckle)

  • THIS is a DON r.i.p.

  • What more can you say Marvelous Marvin

  • absolutely smooth...he really was simply magical, charismatic

  • I was recording the game...normally I turned off during pregame...this is what I captured!

  • RIP marvin gay

  • the best rendition of your national anthem :)
