I've never heard this song played with such emotion. When John plays it, it sounds sonically brilliant, and much more polished. But when Clay sings it, I feel like I'm finally getting the meaning behind the song.
Also, on his guitar playing in this song, Clay taught John his iconic thumb-slapping/finger-picking style of playing. Most importantly, though, Clay is a BAMF guitarist!

@SerialKiller0071 First of all John is brilliant and would be famous without Clay. They parted because they are two very different musicians, not over an argument or anything. They are still friends. Clay also has won a grammy, so he definitely hasn't been left with nothing
@tharms6 you do realize Clay Cook co-wrote this song with John Mayer, don't you? I think being the song's writer he has earned the right to arrange the music however he wants.
