@jgizzy This one had front and rear vacuum actuated locking diffs, they were an option on all Syncros, front locker wasn't available to the US though.
Is there a low-range gearset available for these? Do they use a transfer case? Having a hard time finding meaty morsels of information on the Synchro system.
@wysoft It has a granny gear, no transfer case. The were factory all wheel drive with a Viscous coupling to transfer the power from rear to front and allow give in tight corners. Lockers were and option but only the rear locker in North America
I'm looking for an engine for tranport vw syncro, I'm in Colombia I want to know if there fomra import it with you,,, thanks hope juanjoropo@msn.com response
@colorado1516 what are you talking about?????? this was a 2 wd drive vanagon converted to four wheel drive and a subaru 2.5 litre engine installed!!!! get it now??
@colorado1516 Wait, you're telling somebody else to get their shyte together? Really? There have been many many FWD Subarus, also THIS IS NOT A SUBARU., it just has a Subaru engine. Is yer shit together yet?
I want a syncro westy so bad I can hardly stand it! I think I'll have to settle for a 2wd, though. Syncro's are way too expensive. I'll be buying one next fall, and I've already got a 2.5 subie and a gowesty 5-speed to swap in. Awesome van, and good vid. Thanks!
Thanks! I sure miss this one, some people in Seattle have it now and love it! I recently saw it parked on Stevens Pass and took a few pictures of it and my Syncro 16 together. The Subaru engines really make these a pleasure to drive. My 16 has the new variable valve lift & timing Subaru engine from a 07' and I'm getting 22 mpg, not to bad for a 5200 lb box!!!! Are you in the PNW?
No, I'm nestled into the mountains of beautiful Morgantown, WV. You should experience our natural beauty if you haven't already. What was the '07 subie swap like? Are they as similar to the wasserboxer as the older 2.2/2.5's are? Also, do you know of a way to get enough clearance for 215/75-15 tires on a 2wd westy? I think with some slightly aggressive tires and a locker or posi unit, a 2wd would get me wherever I need to go. If I want to go wheeling, I'll take my Jeep!
u could easily find a beat up vanagon syncro for cheap and but the running gear into ur westy and BOOM a sycnro westy...my dad has a westfalia and is looking for a syncro vanagon for parts
...did I see "for sale" on the window....if yey...I give you 200 box nowthat I saw that video !!!! no joke , you ride well with your van, I saw a lot of fellows driving like crazy on the mud and sand...just like they have no respect to their "pet" .... long life to your van !
Do you have some sort of lockers or LSD? The wheels that were in the air didn't even spin! What's going on? :D awesome video, bud!

too much extra weight in the back :(
madjimms 4 years ago
if there were any less weight it wouldn't be perfectly balanced 50/50!!! ~2500lbs per alxe, it'll float on two wheels
