@murtazaiqbal1: True, if you are not using KDE already Kdenlive installs a lot of stuff. But, I do prefer Kdenlive over Cinelerra. I haven't used Cinelerra in about 2 year (about the time I made this video). So, maybe Cinlerra has gotten better since I last tried it. It's good for what it is, but I think it need a bit more. Of course Kdenlive needs more too. But, it's improved so much over the last 2 year and I expect it to continue too.
@SlaptMan: I don't use Cinelerra any more. I really love Kdenlive. But, make sure you get the newest version of Kdenlive. it's version 0.8.x. I think the repose are still holding 0.7.x. and 0.7.x crashes a lot. It's still in early development, but is pretty stable and has lots of features.
Thanks you are a life saver!I am fairly new to linux and was looking for a alternative to adobe premiere.Thank you for your hard work on these videos!I was able to use gimp to replace Photoshop, and think I have found a replacement for premiere.=)
need lots of CPU power to render videos. is there a faster way to render video? i render 1920x1080 videos. it takes about 40 minutes to render 20 minute video.
@THE16THPHANTOM: Well, I haven't used Cinelerra for about 2 years, and I never did anything in HD with it. But, rendering speed depends on a lot of things. Effects added to the video can slow things down a lot. Different codecs will compress at different speeds. But, I would say that 40 minutes to render 20 minutes of HD video isn't all that slow. But once again, there are a lot of factors.
@Linuxdirk: I recommend using Kdenlive. But, make sure you get the newest version which is Kdenlive 0.8.2. I love Kdenlive and haven't used Cinelerra in about a year and a half. But, older versions of Kdenlive will crash all the time. Most repose still have 0.7.x which isn't very stable. I work with 1080p MOV's from my Canon Rebel T3i all the time in Kdenlive and it works great.
@metalx1000 Kdenlive has one main problem: It needs nearly the complete KDE installed. I don’t want to mess my system up with this uber bloat :) I just found out that OpenShot works very well. Plus: I don’t have to re-encode my AVCHD files, because OpenShot can open them directly.
@metalx1000 Major downside: OpenShot has a very simplified UI as compared with Cinelerra, same for the range of functions. But at least i can feed it my AVCHD files and other media :)
Check out Kdenlive. I've been using it for while now. May sure you get the newest version. Some of the older versions crash often. But, Kdenlive has come a long way in the last year. I love it and it's very simple to use.
@12me91: No, I haven't been using Cinelerra. It's been about a year since I last used it. Ever since Kdenlive became some what stable I've been using it. But, cinelerra definitely can use AVI's. But, there are so many different types of AVI's, I can't promise that it will work with all of them.
I gave this a thumbs up because you taught me something about cutting in a multi-camera operation. There was a confusing bit in the middle about audio, but otherwise, you got the point across.
However, the software is Cinelerra - pronounced (Sin'-eh-LEH-ruh) not seen-REH-luh'. Also, the word is concatenate - not 'concentrate'. Kahn-KA-teh-nate. It means to link the videos together one after another - consecutively rather than in parallel as you did. If others have already said this, pardon me.
@renkinjutsu01: Yeah, it takes a while to get a hang of. I've been using Kdenlive for simple video editing. It's not as powerful as Cinelerra, but it's simpler.
@metalx1000 : One thing though that is really bothering me is that it only seems to run on one of my two cores. I looked in the settings and had the "Force use one core" disabled, but nothing has changed? Preview rendering is still slow even with "render every frame" disabled and turning off the other tracks
Thank you! You managed to cut right to the chase on editing multiple camera views. That's just what I needed! Now I need to look at other tutorials for learning how to edit footage and audio from multiple takes and cameras. I've not chased down all my dependencies to install Cinelerra just yet but in the meantime I'm learning it and you've played a part.
How can a learner stay focussed if the teacher can't stay focussed!!? Thanx for this tutorial but within a few seconds of showing how to select a video you jump to telling us about audio!! Are there any cinelerra tutorials which breaks-down the looading, the editing, then the publishing in 3 different steps? After all, that's logical. There are 3 stages to producing a video - loading it into the program & the right time to put it onto the timeline, editing, & publishing. Simple. So, how?
when i play my video the audio doesnt play ? the audio shows up in the timeline but no sound, also when i render the video the audio is in the redered file
@mattgeb84: I'm guessing that it is something in your Cinelerra Settings. Check and see what Audio Device you have chosen. Which Distro are you running?
My version 2.1.5cv doesn't have tooltip when I mouse over a button. Your tutorials helps a lot. You actually well describe each function of a button when you selected one.
- I used the source code provided on cinelerra's main page. cinelerra 2.1.5cv
- Ubuntu 10.10
If you or anyone else know how to get the tooltip to display. Please , let me know ok. l already tried google search with no luck.
This video shows how to edit, beyond the most basic-basic, and as a person who has edited with other editing programs, I find that this gave me the extra information I needed to do something beyond the most basic.
The problem that I have with Cinelerra is when I render my videos, for the HDV rendering Cinelerra doesn't keep the Aspect ( 16/9) and there is lost of quality even if I use lossless codec.
Does anyone Knows if there is a form to pipe Cinelerra into FFMPEG ???
@KentW776 it is in a different repository cinelerra(dot)org/getting_cinelerra.php will show you how to add the repository so that your apt-get command will work
@KentW776: If you go to the Cinelerra site there are instructions on adding new reposed to Ubuntu for Cinelerra. Also check out Kdenlive. It is in the default ubuntu repose. It's not as powerful as Cinelerra and it can some time's be glitchy, but it is more user friendly.
@metalx1000 Exactly, noob, you should know how to do that. I've been trying to figure out for a few days how to get cinerella for Mint 10. And am no closer than I was 5 months ago.
@nakedvolleyball: Not sure is you were trying to be mean in that last comment, but i just tried sending you a link to step by step instructions on installing Cinelerra on Ubuntu/Mint, but you have friend lock on.
I recommend giving Kdenlive a try.
it's what I've been using a lot lately
But, if you need some of the advanced features of Cinelerra,
I can send you a link with step by step instructions.
I don't know why Ubuntu doesn't have it in it's repose by default,
Thanks for answering. I will try tommorow this tip... sure it will work :)
I have also trouble with the fireboard and the sound car that seem to be not recognized, by ubuntu studio 10,04... strange cause sound card was working well with ubuntu 7...
Also I am in trouble for installing cinelerra... I hause akirad package install cinelerra and I don t see this apps in the menu start app... In synaptic appear as installed... Is there a way to run an app from terminal....
Also I am a shake user in osx have an idea or a tuts for install with not so much pain...
@armorcp5: In the Terminal, type cine and hit tab a few times. It should auto complete it for you , then hit enter.
I've never used Shake, but I believe it is similar to Blender 3D. Blender has a steep learning curve, but once you learn how to use it, it's great. I have plenty of Blender tutorials on my site.
@metalx1000 Thanks for answeriimg I am interrested in Blender,, cinelerra still not work as ardour as audacity not recognize the input signal... Only thing that work well is blenderm gimp , inkscape openoffice...
Very sweet! The quality of your cinelerra tutorials actually convinced me to sign into youtube and subscribe. Many thanks, and please keep them coming!
One question, I can't seem to find the white line that you used to make the fade effect. Instead of that bar I get 3 RGB bars that are located in the middle of the clip instead of the top. However there is a white line on the top of the audio track.
@iviarko: I don't have it in front of me right now, but I believe that if you choose "view" from the menu bar there are different bands you can turn on and off.
Great set of tutorials! I too am exploring using Linux to do video editing for personal projects (I currently use final cut at work but I'm keen to learn using Open Source software for video work).
