I will be using soft paws on my cat very soon. what do you do if you can't afford a device for sanding away old glue? it is an absolute necessity? I was blown away by how wonderful and cooperative your kitty was, as well.
@freakygirl26 You can scrape off the old glue with your fingernails if there's any left on there. Its just easier and quicker with the Dremel. Lately the caps have been holding so well that when they finally fall off I haven't noticed any glue left over at all. I don't think it's a necessity, I just think it makes my job easier to smooth the nail after trimming and remove any old glue if there is any. You can find the Dremel MiniMite on Amazon for around $22. They make one for use on pets $26.
@freakygirl26 If your cat hates the Dremel and refuses to let you use it on it's claws, they are also great to use to sand away the rough dry callouses on your feet. A manicurist taught me that tip years ago. Put a clean sanding tube on it if you use it on yourself. Since cats carry bacteria on their claws don't use the same sanding tube on yourself that you used on the cat. Also don't hold the Dremel in one spot to long as the friction can burn you.
How does your kitty like the soft paws and do they last a while? I want to try them for my cat, Addie. I'm moving in with my boyfriend who has never had a cat and is very afraid for his furniture.I just hope Addie tolerates a manicure half as well as Biscuit does. lol.
@Tayzerfun She doesn't mind the caps at all. I have since gotten a new kitty and apply the caps to her claws also but I have not been able to train her to hold up her paws and work with me like Biscuit does. Fortunately she is very sweet and just sits in my lap and lets me trim her nails and use the Dremmel to sand them and never gives me any trouble. Just be patient and loving and don't force your kitty if it is afraid. It will take you time to get the hang of it.
The nail caps are curved like the natural claw but the tips are rounded. Since cats mostly jump it doesn't affect them at all. I've never seen my cat have any difficulty climbing on everything in the house and I do mean EVERYTHING! There's not a counter, cabinet or piece of furniture she hasn't been on no matter how high. The only problem is the caps get caught up in the carpeted scratching posts. The carpet on the floor has never been a problem but keep an eye on throw rugs with big loops.
@MissBiscuit823 How did you get your cat so used to it?? I just put the tips on my cat's claws tonight for the first time and I'm all scratched up! She had never given me a hard time when I clipped her claws. She seems fine now, playful and content... but she gave a heck of a hard time while I was holding her still to glue to tips...
@Tishieism My cat is very motivated by treats so she was easy to train. My new 3 month old kitty is very different. She's uninterested in treats and I'm having a hard time trying to train her to lift her paw for me. Fortunately she is very docile. Her, I set in my lap like a baby. She lets me trim her nails and never even flinched when I used the Dremel to sand her nails or when I applied the caps. It's easiest when your cat is sleepy. If the cat is agitated it will be unpleasant for you both.
@evian1230 The Animal Shelter made me sign a paper that I would keep her indoors, therefore she doesn't come in contact with other animals. I do take her out using a harness and leash or pet stroller. The caps do get caught up in carpeted cat scratchers so I got rid of the one I had. I use the cardboard type now. You can attach them to the wall so kitty gets a good stretch when she uses them. No caps on hind feet. She climbs on anything and everything she wants, no problem.
gluing caps onto a cats nails is way better then declawing! Since you dont agree with what the lady is doing how about you let her bring her cat over so she can scratch up your furniture instead of hers.
@miaangel247 i already have 2 cats, and for those people who say its impossible to train a cat, it actually is possible, we've trained them never to scratch the furniture from when we got them 3 years ago.
I have one cat and i have trained him not to jump on tables or scratch furniture since he was a kitten! He was trainable but not every cat is. Cats are just like us, they all have different personality's. If my cat keeps scratching the furniture i rather put some rubber things on his nails then get him declawed.
@miaangel247 i still think putting rubber things on their nails. just spray them with just a tiny bit of water, or get your hands wet and shake a few drops on them, (not soak them! it should just be drops) they will learn that way.
I bet that using the dremel instead of clipping the nails makes the caps stick better, since you are putting more grooves in the outer nail...Ingenious!
@missnu01 When I watch the manicurists do the acrylic nails they always rough up the top of the nail a little with a fine file to make the acrylic hold better, or so I've been told. So I kinda figured it would have to work the same on the cats nails. I lightly go around the sides of the nail as well as the tip. They hold good. The only time I have a problem is if I get the nails to short. You gotta have enough nail to glue the caps to.
is missbiscuit from pnd the pet app?

gluing the caps onto the cats nails is just wrong. they use those for defense for 1, and how do they climb!? they cant enjoy their cat tree's!
