Can you imagine 12/13 yrs and this hit me like a train. Who needed drugs etc. Just love and fusion. 2.17 and into 5.14 took me somewhere else and I'm still there.
This incredible piece along with Allman Brothers and Bonzo Dog Band albums helped me survive a hopeless and terror-filled stretch in early twenties. Day after day, drawing me back from the precipice.
Like jimi page he is very skilled with expression, and i am new to this jazz fusion but like it a lot. A man of talent. He is very good, can he play too with his violin bow?
Listening to this had a profound effect on me. I only heard electric guitar in the rock blues genre, when my older brother played this I was stunned by how powerful and musical it was. The entire Inner Mounting Flame became one of the most wonderful and perplexing albums that I listened to non stop for a very long time. I then went on to the other MO albums, the first band, and John McLaughlin for me became a guitarist/writer unmatched with any other guitarist. This great guitar solo...wow!
@janicaquadros Well said! I listened to some of their other pieces and there was nothing like them. John McLaughlin was the architect of that incredible sound which has never be equaled really. That combination of odd time signatures and Indian ragas mixed with western harmonies played with an ear splitting rock sound!
...yeah there was nothing like them.
Amazingly that band was together for about two years that's it. I can't imagine music made like that today, or in any era for that matter.
It's nice that you want to avoid copyright violations, but did you get permission from JM, or whoever owns this before posting it on youtube? My impression has been that just about all fan postings on youtube are in violation-maybe not? The only way I justify it is with the knowledge that I will or already have bought stuff I listen to here (like this great album), and I've discovered people here that I later bought music from.
MO wears well ! and to think kids, no computers were used by the MO in their heyday ! An all analogue band ! I am beginning to think true artistry requires analogue gear, and studios to be exorcised of digital computer hobgoblins !
We have sports, rap, and xbox to thank for kids failing to see and hear the joys of creating valuable artistry in music ! Dios Mio !
The albums are totally totally worth owning, the cover art is great. This stuff is like fine wine you have pride when you own the real thing. "you know you know" is my fave.
I bought 'The Inner Mounting Flame' about a week ago and wow. It was only 13 bucks brand new. Ordered it at Barnes & Noble. Gonna get 'Birds of Fire' next.
se nota que siempre quisiste a tu amada la mas querida de todo el contorno de tu altitud y de querer , y ella siempre esta oh estara en tu feel y corazon
I think it's a really stupid and superfluous message. I'm all for supporting artists and NOT for copying music illegally. But then: DON'T post it on YouTube! I mean: duh?!
Why not post it? People need to be reminded CONSTANTLY about how illegal downloading is killing music. Then maybe they will stop STEALING and artists can pay their fucking rent!
Dawn - a fitting title for this song. This is the kind of track one can play while watching the sun rise above the clouds.
Amazing guitar work here - jittery psychedelia and freerange jazz. No wonder Miles wanted him in his band, small wonder there's a song named for him on Bitches Brew. :)
I like the Celtic folk overtones as well with the violins
Re: Dylan - That's a kickass track. I have Big Fun on vinyl, found it brand new on Ebay. It's my fav track as well - swaggering wah-wah guitar work, a nasty sax solo, brooding bass - amazing. What's nice about the LP is it's a double album, each with a side-long track. The artwork is better, too.
"Lonely Fire" from that LP is also pretty sweet. Those 2 tracks are hugely understated, IMO.
this is that beginning of fusion its a mixture of rock motown and evryother style to the traditional jazz feeling thats what i grew up on but my friends would not listen to such music with the uneven counts and so so i was a loner back then no bands to play with cuz nobody liked this in my country but i kept listeneing it really helps specially for young guitarist or young musicians even now
these were the trend setters hear that a wailing guitar in jazz and that was theprototype playing
I used to hear this piece when I was in middle school (back then was called Juior High)in the late 70's. I came across the cd at a local public library sale so I got it. It felt like I was buying some precious relic. Manna from heaven for the soul.
I sit and listen with a huge smile on my face. Music I haven`t heard in thirty years. Youtube is nothing short of amazing. When I die, I want to have my ashes scattered here.

Interesting fact about this album: with the exception of the rubato track (something about streams), the number of beats in a measure increases by one for each track. So Meeting of the Spirits is in 6, Dawn is in 7, etc.
i am old enough to remember i saw this incredible band at Ravinia outside of chicago and in Europe when i was in the military in '73...I turned my brother on to the IMF this Christmas - he said WOW! i said 36 years old bro and he just couldn;t believe it...i have given this to my son on his 21st birthday 4 years ago and he loved it...I am about to turn a co worker on to this next saturday...oh what a joy...the best music ever!
The album 'Inner Mounting Flame', one of the finest records made;whence this piece came from, was recorded in less than 2 days in the studio. I believe 'Jesus Christ Mclaughlin' ha! rented the guitar.
'Saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the Lowell (Mass.)Civic Center in 1973. Their plane was 3 hours late and somehow John got word to the promotor that he would be there and if we would wait for him. Well anyhow the announcement was made and nobody left - I mean nobody! If memory serves the band got there around 10:30 and they WAILED for 2 hours straight. What a great memory and what a super group! Please reunite!
This was my first exposure to JM. Then he brought the MO to my High School in '71: Jack Bruce on bass (from Cream w/ Eric Clapton), Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer. Was before Jerry, whom I saw the next 2 times. A supremely inspired track.
In early 70' hhis piece made me jazzfan. Simply it opened my ears in a way that after listening to this I was no longer able to listen to straight rock .
Yes I love that song from the MO could listen to this over & over without getting bored, the theme melody is so marvelous sweet my favourite group and yes I bought all of them Mahavishnu albums I´m glad I have them all on vinyl, except the one they released on the reuinion in the 80´s.
I have this on vinyl its superb
