I love being a conductor and would work for ANY railroad almost for free!!! I work for NS and love it!! What an awesome career after 20 years in the Navy!!
I'm planning on getting hired by CN or CP or the ONR in 2 years... This is a great video, really helps someone like myself know what we are getting into. I can't wait to start as a conductor!
If you want to be a conductor in Canada, CP and CN are always hiring. They will pay for your training. You just have to be o.k. with being on call 24/7. They have a high turnover rate because a lot of guys don't like that lifestyle.
I wish UP would allow us to get on and off moving equipment on a regular basis, it could save a lot of time when working, obviously only those that can do it only, those that can't just don't... I know how to do it, but I just don't cuz I don't want to get my ass fired.
Tough to get in? I've heard from people here in British Columbia, that they have taken the conductor course on their own at BCIT, (Biggest trade school in B.C.) and just about all the people that graduated got hired. Some before they even graduated.
yea i got in no problem there is a course you can take gives you a good chance but theyll also train you. But i had back ground doing work as a contractor for the railroad i love it some days can suck but i love my job
@wackymac28 There is a conductor course at college you must take & likely need your grade 12 to get into it. But yeah, serious case of a thousand applicants for each job.
@JayJr2007 you only need your grade 12 diploma, the conductor courses usually don't mean much because they train you on the job. Its a good idea to attend the college course though, it might just be the thing to squeak your way over other applicants!
@JayJr2007 I'm in highschool currently and planning on getting a career in a train crew, how many years of conductor experience do you need before you become a locomotive engineer? it's the job i want to have.
@wackymac28 don't worry about what that guy says. unless you've taken a vo-tech program in school, you might want to see about a college. you might want to apply to the yards in the city that you live in. have a great resume, no smoking, no drinking, no drugs, EVER. they will search you up, if you have even the most pettiest crime on your record, you wont get the job. just a tip mate. go for it!
@wackymac28 CP requires you to be at least 17yrs old and have a Grade 12 or GED, they say they also prefer you to have three to five years work experience in a safety related job field. I hired on 3 and half years ago off the streets and never paid the $10 000, that most of these technical schools charge. Best option is to check out the hiring sections of CP and CN's web sites.
@wackymac28 JayJr is right! Im a track maintainer in montreal On the local gang..and My father who is a conductor actually told me It would take me a few years to just become a Conductor Trainee! And btw Jay the conductor course Is an In House training Program! No need to go to college for it! But you are right..there is a long list!!
