Afrikaans is the language. It is a mixture of Dutch, german and english. The Afrikaner are the people: mostly whites with dutch, french (a lot of french), english, german, scottisch ancestors. You should say, that a lot of Afrikaner also have black blood, though. Thus: Afrikaans - language; the Afrikaner - the people; 1 Afrikaner; 2 Afrikaners (add the 's' for plural). Finally, also the brown population of SA has Afrikaans as their mothertongue and a lot of blacks also speak the language.
