I have a acer aspire one, just like the one in the video. I am having problems with my wireless connection. the wireless button is on it the light shows up but it is not searching for a wireless signal can anyone help me.
its all preference my friend. for instant I don't game on PC or edit videos/music. so Linux does everything I need. although I do enjoy Win2k and XP, i haven't used mac enough to form a solid opinion on it.
Not really. It's given me lots of shit, switched to Linux and never looked back. Of course, I need Windows for iTunes and such, but I find that XP suits my needs a whole lot better than Vista ever did on my computer. Bet Wndows 7 might be a better alternative for those still in Windows' leash.
What's "foolish" about it? That you actually have control over what you're computer is doing or perhaps you're PC wasn't compatible with it so you decide to attack the OS? Remember that Windows (which you pay for) needs a LOT of drivers to function, whereas Linux (mostly) just works, but does have some proprietary sometimes, and if doesn't work on your PC, it's the PC manufacturer's fault, not the OS...
I can operate the webcam and capture some great images. But its silent movie stuff in colour.....surely it must be possible to get sound, otherwise why the microphone?
Thank you for your very clear, concise and objective little video. I purchased this model and it's cute. I like that it can fit in my overcoat pocket. I don't like that its webcam is almost useless because there's nothing out there it will connect with. When do you think Google or Messenger (for instance) will be making it possible for webcam chats through this Linux OS?
now they have this netbook with a 120 GB hard drive. Does this mean that other applications such as video editing software would be able to be installed?
@matthew550 - before you have your Right-click enabled you can Left-click "My Documents", it will open the "File Manager". click File, and the link to the terminal is right there.
hey nice vid! only a question im going to get this but i dont now if it will run fine with all te preograms i use almost every day if some one can help plz post a comment, the programs are:
i tunes
limewire
windows msn
internet
office 2007
the sims
nintendo 64 emulator
if someone can help plz post a comment!! thanks!!!
what I can say is, GET THE WINDOWS XP VERSION, it has 1GB RAM 1.6GHz Intel Atom Processor, 160GB Hard Drive, so you will be able to use iTunes, Windows MSN, Internet, Office 2007, the SIMS and Nintendo 64 Emulator, but might I make a suggestion, instead of using Limewire, use Frostwire, its safer.
Well thats all I have to say, I am getting the Windows XP Version soon, its $348.00 USD at Wal Mart.
I just received one for my birthday. I would like to know how the web cam works. Does it come on automatically if you download Skype and are running the Skype program? I'm sorry to ask such a silly question, but I truly don't know much about the web cam feature. Thank you so much!!~Marilyn
dont buy a kid a college had one and dropped it on the table and Broke it monitor cable broke inside (dropped about 30 maybe 40cm) this is bad as i treat my medion laptop like shit and it still works 100%
hi geri, how u doin? i just wana know coz im plannin to get an acer aspire one, the linux os....if i would be able to download the yahoo messenger there? or it would be very hard or impossible to do that? should i get the xp os instead? and i get that, do i have to install an antivirus software on it? unlike on linux? hope to hear from u soon. more power
@wennjayz - hey! i'm doing well thanks, hope you're doing good too. Yhaoo doesn't have an official Linux version of its messenger, there are some "other" versions out there like Yux and more, or you can use Pidgin or the built in messenger Linpus has. Unfortunately those are not 100% compatible with Yahoo messenger (ie. no file transfer, photo share or video chat), but that's a small price to pay. i'd stick with the Linpus version unless you REALLY MUST HAVE a Windows machine.
no this is not an asus eee pc rip of f i had one of them and there shit i only had it 2 weeks and it broke this is way better, i have one of these now
Yes, actually the one I review is ours (my wife and I got one just for travel and "tossing around"). So far, since we got it about 1.5 months ago, it runs smoothly with ZERO problems.
I agree if with you if storage is something you must have, though the idea (the way I see it) behind ultra portable laptops is the ability to just "throw" it in your bag and lug it around without worrying about mechanical and moving parts (such as the HDD heads). You're right that the 6 cell battery will last longer, but then also add the the total weight, and then on the other hand a HDD consumes more than a SSD, so it's sort of a trade-off. Bottom line is - Get what fits your needs best :)
@Sensfan613 - The model with the 120GB HDD and 1GB memory is available already for about $450 but still with a 3-cell battery. The model with 160GB HDD, 6-cell battery and 1GB memory is available for pre-order online and oddly enough it's priced at about $400 (if you pre-order now). Both come with WinXP and not Linpus (Linux) and both will still have to need to handle with care not to damage the HDD when lugging around.
Great to see you guys do a review of this machine. I saw it in the flesh a few weeks ago and was delighted to see that it came preinstalled with Linux. So I asked the guy at the store what distro it came with... and he gave the most stupid answer of all time... 'I don't know which version of Linux... but you can install Windows XP' This mentality is annoying.
1. Intel GMA 950 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 3.0. Yes, Compiz is available and can be enabled via the terminal. Free drivers are available. Don't know about the test run, depends on popular demand
2. WiFi Acer InviLink 802.11b/g with free drivers
3. Camera works very well with Skype. Not yet tested with other software
4. Real life usage with WiFi the whole time, the 3 cell battery will last for about 2h 20min give or take, really depends on many other factors such as screen brightness etc.
6. The one reviewed was bought at one of the local computer stores (a chain) and the sales guy said the memory can NOT be upgraded... We all know it comes with 512MB and can be upgraded (based on what Acer says) to 1GB and 1.5GB, so I am not sure how willing the vendors are going to be to open its "guts" and upgrade.
Good grief... They have a WinXP version anyway. That's just silly. Our local microcenter people are at least smart of enough to say things like "the Linux version comes with 512 RAM, but you don't need as much to run the linux version" nice sales spin.. lol. The Win version came with 1GB of memory and an 80GB HDD for $30 more. I wouldn't want the HDD, but the extra memory might be nice. I have the Aspire One with Linpus, and I have not felt like I needed more RAM yet.
So its a rip off of the Asus EEE PC. How about having a HDD the size of a 30gig, 60gig, or 80gig Ipod/MP3 style HD so it can be used as a ultra portable multi media device / laptop with the ease and speed of an ipod/mp3 player? Until Acer comes up with something better, I'll stick with the original EEE PC.
Everyone is coming out with EEE clones, but I do like this one because it has the most usable keyboard of all (except for the HP). I tried a lot of them at Linux World Expo, and this one struck me as the best. The price is also pretty attractive. What I would like to know is:
1. What graphic card does it have? Compiz compatible? Are free drivers available for it? Maybe a test run with compiz in your next video?
2. What about the Wifi card? Does it have one? Free drivers?
3. How does the camera work with Skype, Ekiga or Gizmo Project?
4. How well does the battery stand up to normal world usage? ie. with Wifi and maybe the camera working.
5. How hot does it get?
6. How expensive is it to get the seller to add more RAM.
Thanks.Great channel
librano 3 years ago 5
1. Intel GMA 950 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 3.0. Yes, Compiz is available and can be enabled via the terminal. Free drivers are available. Don't know about the test run, depends on popular demand

How about having a HDD the size of a 30gig, 60gig, or 80gig Ipod/MP3 style HD so it can be used as a ultra portable multi media device / laptop with the ease and speed of an ipod/mp3 player? GlockNinja 3 years ago
Everyone is coming out with EEE clones, but I do like this one because it has the most usable keyboard of all (except for the HP). I tried a lot of them at Linux World Expo, and this one struck me as the best. The price is also pretty attractive. It doesn't have as much memory as the newer asus, but I don't think that is a deal breaker. I prefer the SSD to a HDD at any size, and the fact that this is so elegantly expandable is super cool. The biggest drawback I see is battery life.
