  • I wonder how true that statement is. Consider a gas car that gets about 9.5L/100k fuel efficiency, if driven 400km a week, will consume 1,976L of gas per yr. A Prius gets about 4.1L/100k, this will consume 832 L/yr (hybrid consumes 58% less). Refineries get ~75L of gas from a barrel of oil. Meaning the gas car uses 26 b/yr whilst the hybrid uses 11 b/yr. If the lifetime is 5yrs, the hybrid consumes 75b less oil. I'd be interested to see how much pollution batteries create compared to that oil.

  • and if someone wants to buy a hybrid, then they should. its their money. who is anyone to talk someone out of buying a hybrid? i plan to. even if it does cost that much in x amount of years, at least im not putting more pollitions into the air. and isnt that the whole point?

  • women do know these things, thank you very much. dont generalize.

  • What up Dominicanos? I'm Dominican looking to buy a hybrid as well....is it worth it?

  • get a job first

  • I'm an HR interviewer for a fortune 20 company....Do you need a job dumbass?

  • dude! i have a 2003 hond civic hybrid with a manual transmission, and the highest i ever get is like around 50mpg how do you get yours up to 90 mpg??

  • Manual

  • You're right, he has a manual, because there are Up/Down shift indicators next to the rev counter.

He had to first accelerate the car, shift to Neutral, kill the engine by turning the key to ACC, and then activate the electronics by turning the key to ON w/o starting the engine. If speed every decreases too much, he restarts the engine, shifts into a gear, accelerates back up to speed, and repeats.

  • This is a hypermiling technique known as Pulse and Glide that you can use to acheive 70+MPG: but while you still have full electronics and power steering, you don't have brake pump power, so it's a dangerous method unless the road is absolutely devoid of other cars, obstacles, or deer/moose.

  • btw I have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid CVT, and you can read more about Pulse and Glide and other hypermiling techniques at a hybrid forum/wiki/info site called GreenHybrid. Just go to greenhybrid . com without the spaces.

  • While autostop is on all safety systems are still active in the car, if you loose vacuum in the brake system the car engine just turns back on automatically.

  • It's simple, he's driving with Auto-Stop activated. Meaning, the car is rolling in N or D with the engine turned off. No fuel is consumed, only battery power to keep the electronics working.

  • You hit the nail on the head.

  • were you driving downhill with the engine dragging?

  • No, I average about 20 mile of driving with the engine in autostop, this is of course 130 mile round trip.

  • So why did the gas go back up after 73 mpg? Did you fill back up. You filled back up didn't? You just couldn't resist.
