In Syria, the Syrian people were optimistic that President Assad would enact reforms that will pave way for Syria to become free and democratic. In the end, Assad didn't do anything and by 2011, after the Egyptian Revolution, the Syrian people begin speaking out against Assad and the regime and in response, Assad unleashed his army to massacre them. If Vietnam is to face civil unrest, will the govt unleashed force?

Vietnam has proper elections. And FYI, not ALL candidates are from the Communist party; some run as independents!

Given that they have (at least nominally) democratic system, do you really think that someone will go to jail for JUST reading about democracy? My guess: he probably did a lot more, which the "oh-so-unbiased" reporter didn't want us to know because it wouldn't make for a good story.

That explains why the communist never show concrete evidence, just always saying they have evidences but rarely show it. When the communist are criticed they always say come to Vietnam to see the real situation, but when people arrived to Vietnam to investigate they are suddenly banned and kick out by secret police.

@dbzerbardock REALLY? Your facts about how the Vietnamese people elect the government are misleading. First of all, all nations have elections--even in North Korea. However, what is different is whether the elections are fair or not--in other words, democratic or not. In order for an election to be fair, it has to be free and competitive. In Vietnam, there's no competition when it comes to elections--every candidate must be a member of the Party and support its agenda.

@dbzerbardock Second of all, the Vietnamese people does not ELECT the Cabinet and the Cabinet does not ELECT the President. According to the Vietnamese constitution, the people ELECTS the National Assembly--the legislature and then after that, the National Assembly ELECTS the Cabinet and the President, separately. It's very interesting that you defend your government--but misleading its facts.

@dbzerbardock and third of all, we are not ignorant when it comes to democracy. Democracy is a broad concept and it has more than one form of it. But a representative, limited government that protects the rights and freedoms of citizens is the best form of government--one where people have the right to speak out without fear. Your type of "democracy" is very similar to ones in the Soviet Union and in China, and because of it, that type of "democracy" is very unstable and more prone to collapse.

@dbzerbardock Look at what happened not just in the Soviet Union, but also in Tunisia and in Egypt---both of those nations have a similar government system just like yours in Vietnam---a regime machinery based on one party (in Tunisia, it is the RCD, in Egypt, it is the NDP), and you know what happened to that machinery....it collapsed. You need to stop saying Vietnam has democratic elements and face reality now.

This is sad but things are as good as they've ever been since the war and getting better, and the only other option is to treat them like Cuba and things are no better there. I'm not a McCain supporter; he thinks we should not sell food or allow trade and tourism to Cuba. Free trade has allowed the people to use the internet and meat people from around the world and this is the best hope for them.
