Having said that, Sea of Japan is much easier to locate on the map.

Any ocean on the earth can be called East Sea. Any part of the ocean is east of something.

Koreans often claim there is no historical usage of the ‘Sea of Japan’, and that Japan only managed to call the body of water thus because of its former colonial might. Not so. The term was well-established by the international community while Japan was still in its isolationist period.

‘Sea of Japan’ appeared in Matteo Ricci’s map published in 1602.

Survey conducted of 4,548 maps printed before 1900 in the national libraries of USA, UK, France, Germany and Russia which shows that ‘Sea of Japan’ was used on 1,890 maps and ‘East Sea’ used on only 3. The remaining maps used either no name or a different name. In short, the name ‘Sea of Japan’ had been internationally established long before Japan became a colonial power.

1. No, Japan does not "own" the sea. However, the name "Sea of Japan" follows a standard naming convention.

2. True, Korea is allowed to enter the sea because the name does not imply ownership. Similarly Mexico does not own "the Gulf of Mexico".

3. False, Dokdo or any other Korean island do not belong to Japan just because they are in the Sea of Japan. It's just a name because if Japan didn't exist it would be the Pacific Ocean.

I don't get what they mean by north and south korea "suddenly" said that Sea of Japan is the wrong name. It was East Sea for very long time, Japan just changed when they occupied korea. So Japan is saying, "We stole the sea, so it's our sea"

Although The United Nations confirmed its adoption of "Sea of Japan" in its official documents and Sea of Japan is the commonly used term to refer to the sea amongst most other countries, North Korea proposes the "East Sea of Korea" and South Korea proposes the "East Sea", or the "Sea of Korea/Korean Sea" or Sea of Peace. It is historical from 1600s, and that only one name should be used for one thing. Now in the Korean view, they have maps that were made from the B.C. and a map that "Japan actually made" which showed that Sea of Japan was East Sea (Dong Hae) and Sea Of Japan was the Pacific Ocean.
