i've gotta rewatch this film w/o my friends sometime. they're kinda distracting when theyre making jokes about the film and how they're more for gory horror. i find the film a lot creepier once i found out that jack apparently sexually abused danny.
Lol. I love the sound of people ranting. Particularly Randal from the Clerks movies, and now you're on my list lol. Anyway yes I never noticed this before but now I'm thinking the same thing. "Dude, what the fuck?". I've heard the bear blowjob thing is some nod-of-the-head to the book, just a little easter egg or something that people who've read the book would go like "HAHAHA!" And get all excited when they saw this shot cos they know what it means. :)
And as for the BJ scene, i think that was suppose to be a dog, becase in the book, in the party scene, there is a guy who got this other guy to dress up as a dog and he'll give him a raise or something and he makes him do ridiculous things. and there is another part on the book where the guy in the dog costume chases Danny, but he's not wearing the head and he has sharp teeth and kinda looks demonic. But yeah, read the book, it might make sense to the movie. and because it is really good.
Maybe I'm able to clarify some things here. As you may know, the SHinging is based on Stephan King's novel of the same name, and it is a really awesome book, love it. Instead of an ax, Jack was used a roque mallet, which is kinda like a croque mallet. Jack wacked Halloran when he got there. But a factor to Halloran not knowing exactly where Jack was, could have to do with the Supernatural force in the hotel posesseing Jack and thus making it impossible for Holloran to know of his whereabouts.
I remember watching this movie when I was 11 or so, and the blowjob scene creeped the shit out of me. I wasn't sure WHAT that was, but I knew it had a sexual connotation, and it was the scariest scene in a horror movie I had ever seen. Obviously, that mix of horror, violence and creepy sex disturbed me to no end.
@Ilikelimpbizkit That's possible. It's possible that nothing happened at all. It's possible that everything is just occurring in one of the characters mind. I'm willing to consider anything in terms of "The Shining" because of how abstract it is. Curious though, could you elaborate on your theory (not calling you out, just genuinely interested).
@Godslonelyman11 I saw an analysis of the shining that seems a little stretched at points, but he theorized that all of the ghostly oddities could be explained by other means. He had a weird theory that Jack is molesting Danny because he has a Playgirl in the beginning. He also theorized 237 was a figment of Danny's imagination as part of a dream sequence and Jack's experience is metaphorical for Jack experiencing the pain he's inflicted upon is son. I'm willing to accept anything at this point.
One interpretation that I've always liked is that Danny's father also has the shinning, he just isn't really aware of it. This is what makes him extra susceptible to the overlook mojo.
@hugesinker I'm with you 100% on that. The idea that Jack is shining the whole time he's there without realizing it makes sense to me. He's catching glimpses of what has occurred that don't really make much sense, further fueling his descent into madness. Would also make the case that shining is hereditary (Jack passing it to Danny - Grandma passing it to Scatman, etc.).
It's definitely one way to look at it. Good call. (& thanks for watching!)
@Godslonelyman11 In the book, there was a man in a dog suit (in the movie I think its that man in the bear suit) that tried to attack Danny. He was one of the ghosts of the hotel, and the other ghosts would make fun of him and make him do things.I think this scene is just that dog ghost and the guy that made fun of him. I don't know why he was giving the guy a BBJ though (bear blow job)
also, for the bear scene shot, my interpretation is that Wendy begins her own voyage of telepathic visions while she's looking for Danny. the horrors she witnesses are a metaphoric representation of her family's situation as she's being enlightened to realize what she's going through. so the bear BJ represents possible sexual abuse to Danny by Jack that she may have known about but denied (similar to how she earlier denies Jack's physical abuse to Danny).
@keithyw Excellent points, sir. All kidding aside, I always thought that Scatman & Danny were linked up (shining) at the moment he died, which is why Danny saw/felt it. As far as the bear is concerned, truthfully I think that Wendy is experiencing some phenomena (whether she's shining or herself, or having images projected from Jack/Danny is left to be said) and therefore catching random flashes of events that may or may not have occurred...
@keithyw ...the beauty of the flick, tho, is that we can never really be certain of anything. Thanks for the thoughtful comments and for checking out my nonsense. Much appreciated!
@Godslonelyman11 i'm a bit obsessed with this film myself. i like the little nuisances Kubrick puts in that you need to catch. for instance, watch Jack's face as he slaughters Mr Halloran. It mirrors Danny's face in a murderous way, which in turn resembles the elevators with the gushing blood. when you see such careful precision in films, you have to question why the director made such a shot or what the intended effect would be.
@Godslonelyman11 i like the obscurity of this film that leaves much to be interpreted. many people link the bear scene to the book, but as a film maker, you can't assume that everyone has read the book. so i think Kubrick threw the reference in there and appropriated it into another narrative level. there's some interesting theories beyond linking the bear to Danny's potential sexual abuse by Jack as well. but that's Kubrick for ya :p
when i was a kid, i used to think that Mr Halloran was (the physical manifestation of) Tony. i'm wondering if Kubrick's reportedly use of subliminal messages implied that Jack was literally cutting off Danny's telepathic powers by Jack's slaying of Mr Halloran? otherwise, why would a kid out of LOS be able to see Mr Halloran getting killed and screaming like that?
he senses something's wrong, he doesn't "hold a conversation" with the kid because, as you say the kid is fuked up and also never in the film does he himself communicate with scatman's character through telepathy
as for being axed can't you give the man some credit to nicholson's stealth ability?
you know other scene that confusing me a little, in the scene where the old keeper and jack meet just when they crash a lady in a golden dress pass with a blood hand in her butt
Like the woman in room 237, this mysterious scene is explained in the novel, but not in the film. At one point in the novel, Jack is dancing with a woman at a masque ball during the 1920s, and he notices a young man wearing a dog mask and behaving like a dog for the amusement of a tall, bald man. This bald man is the man in the tuxedo later seen by Wendy.
hahaha! Love these. Just one thing. Dick can only "Shine" with other's who Shine. Like his grandmother when he was a kid and Danny. He also says "sometimes places shine too." So he knows some crazy sh_t is going down but we can't expect him to know that Jack is around the corner.
What really annoyed me was the fact that he went ALL that way only to die stright away and in a pretty unscary way, without music even, like it isn't at all significant. But I reckon Stanley Kubrick wanted to surprise people who had read the book and expected him to survive.
Actually it's explained in the book. He's not that powerful ... it's Danny. Danny is the one who's pushing the conversation and that premonition to him all he way down in Florida, and it's Danny the hotel wants.
The bear and man is to show the some of the sexual perversion that took place in the hotel. I worked the night shift at hotel for a year and you can't believe some of the stuff that goes on.
ya that confused the hell out of me when i watched this too... he has the power to see when others are going to die... but hes blind to his own demise when all he had to do was look 90 degrees to the left to see a healilly breathing jack with a fire axe... and i was too young to understand the bear blowing part... nice job man!
The Bear/Dog/Pig/Pumbaa the Warthog, whatever you wanna call it... It's simple, it's just an image of a event that has happened in that room in the past, some dude gets off on other dudes blowing him while wearing a mask... Now, do they leave the door open on purpose...? Who Knows, that's the real question.
I'm sorry but you can't say this doesn't make sense. Halloran's 'Shining Skills' (precognitions, telepathy, etc) are by no means eternal - his ability to use them is not constant. In other words, they come and go. If the character was all-knowing like you make him out to be in this video, wouldn't he be burdened by the curse of sensing and seeing EVERY evil-doing on Earth? What happened when he was killed was a lapse in his abilities, not a plot hole.
you should do terminator 2. the bit at the end where arnie has just killed the T-00 and then he says the most out of place line in a movie. "I need a vaction" there we go a furturistic robot that goes about terminating people says it needs a vaction. makes me kringe everytime i hear it
So weird that you say that, I had planned on possibly doing T2 next [with a different observation, but in that same scene]. I may have to make mention of that line now, with your permission of course...
My last point is, that people who "shine", interact with each other only.People who don't shine (again, this is something to argue about, does Jack "shine" ?), don't interact with those.
Thus, the cook couldn't know at all, if Jack was hiding a few feet away.
So you could argue that the hotel is "shielding" his true identity.
Also, as far as I understood the concept of the shining, sometimes visions are very blurry and non definitive, you can't always tell past and present visions apart.
The cook was probably not 100 % sure what was going on in the hotel, if he knew, he wouldn't have died like that.
