  • Hell, I thought it jumped out of the tank. Nice leap though!

  • That was awesome, i got bitten by my parrot and have the scar to prove it but i was rearranging his tank....so!

  • nice jump shot

  • Has he ever jumped out before?

  • wow fucking best jump

  • Awesome Valentine!!!

  • jesaaas!!!

what a jump!! is this real?

  • I have a blood parrot in a 20 gallon and he is just fine

  • I have a 20 gallon with 5 convicts and one blood parrot all the fish are about 4 inches and they never fight . they got lots of hiding spots I have pipes glued together and they are stacked like a traingle the whole way to the top. So this genral rule all depends on the temperment of the fish. I will be moving them to a 50 gallon in a couple months but the fine now!

  • looks more like a 30litre tank, parrots are well cool, ive got two big ones and a small one, there in a 20gallon (which looks a lot bigger than the one in the video) tank but they seem happy enough for now. When i stick my hand in they brush against it like they do with each other :)

  • Read well. It is stated below AND in the video description that I moved them into this 10 gallon (roughly 37 liters) tank because of aggression issues and THEN they were moved to an 80 gallon tank (clearly not the one in the video.) A 20 gallon tank is way too small for 3 parrots, the rule of thumb is usually 30 gallons for ONE parrot and then you add 10 gallons for each additional parrot as you go, so the minimum size for you is 50 gallons (which is also too small in my opinion.)

  • WOW! That is horrible. I feel bad for fish when I see them treated like that. I know Betta fish can live in small amounts of water but I feel so bad for them when I see them in those tiny, filthy cups at the pet stores.

  • Nice fish. Blood Parrots are awesome looking fish, it's a shame most ''serious'' hobbyists don't respect them because of all the ridiculous ''tatooing'' crap, which only makes the fish look horrible while slowly killing it :(

I'm guessing these fish are in a bigger tank now?

  • That's true, not only because of the tattooing and other hideous things, but also because they're hybrids and some "purists" hate that. Yes, the fish are in an 80 gallon tank now, this was very temporary because of aggression issues.

  • Awesme! Yeah pet shops really do treat their fish like shit. Seriously there were probably 8 or 9 Blood Parrots each about 6-7 inches long in maybe a 20 gallon tank! Thanks!

  • @sensationaddict69: That's pretty bad, but I can top it. I saw a PetLand with a 9" Full-Red Oscar, a 10" Redbelly Pacu, a 9" African Bagrid Catfish, and an 8" Common Pleco...in a 20 gallon tank.

  • Thanks! I saw some at a different pet store today and there were at least 6 of them in a tiny tank and they were on the larger side. Can you keep a Blood Parrot with a Bala shark?

  • Sure, you can. Yeah at pet shops they often treat their fish like shit, they don't really care whether the fish are treated humanely or not, all they care about is making profit. Make sure you ensure your fish a proper filtration too. Good luck

  • do blood parrots get big fast? because i saw one at my local pet store and it's pretty small but i know they get really big and in the future i will be able to get a bigger tank for it but right now i have a 30 gallon. is that okay?

  • Definitely, 30 gallons would be enough for now if you're not planning to have other similar sized fish with it. Usually 30 gallons is the benchmark for one blood parrot cichlid. Enjoy!

  • my parrot fish will do this but not as high. i dont want to risk it

  • Definitely, you don't want them falling out of the tank. Nice setup by the way, your fish look really happy.

  • how did you teach it to jump like that? I have a small one in a tank with lots of hiding places and it never comes out. I can hand feed it but I have to stick my hand all the way in.

  • hehehehe, you don't wanna be stressing the fish by sticking your hand all the way in. Just be a little patient, it will start coming out in a week or two and after a couple of months when it's feeling comfortable, just start holding some food on top of the fish tank and the fish will jump up in attempts to grab them :)

  • yea my orange parrot never came out from behind his lava rock but like u said after about two weeks of settleing in he is happy and swimming freely.

  • wow nice hahaha I thought it was gonna fall out of tank..

  • Would a 29gal with a very good filtration system be enough for a blood parot?

  • Yes, definitely. Usually, the rule of thumb is to have a minimum tank size of 30 gallons for one parrot then adding 10 gallons for each added fish. Add a couple of flowerpots in there for the parrot to feel secure and in a couple of weeks you'll have a very happy fish :) Good luck!

  • Thanks! and one more question, could i put any other fish in there with it? if so what kind? thanks for the help

  • I'd throw in there 2-4 cory cats since they're bottom dwellers. You can also add tiger barbs if the parrot is small but once it gets bigger you might have some aggression issues.

  • ok thanks

  • No problem, good luck!

  • haha thats almost describeing my tank.........u should check it out.....and nice trick!

  • you will need a bigger tank soon as the fish get big fast!

  • Yes, this was VERY temporary, the fish was moved to a 45 gallons and soon to an 80 gallons.

  • Did your Blood Parrot ever lay eggs? Mine just did and i dont really know what to do..

  • Nops, never laid eggs. I think both of mine are males. In any case, it's been told that blood parrots are not fertile...

  • How do you know what sex they are? I've been searching and searching on the internet for information on that, and everything I see says it's damn near impossible to tell the difference.

  • There isn't really a definite way to sex parrot cichlids. I guess your best bet would be to get like 10 juveniles and put them in a 120 gallon and wait for them to pair up, but even then, the probability of them being fertile is close to zero.

If you really wanna see some fish mating, I'd recommend you get a pair of convicts, they're the easiest to breed and you can house a pair in a 40 gallon :)

  • in females you can see the egg tube which is underneath the fish sort of like this / but the males tube is a lot smaller sort of like ,

  • Nice to see a parrot do some bold daring acts for a treat. Maybe I will try that with mine. LOL! Nice video. 5 out of 5.

  • Thanks, it was really young here. Now it's in a much bigger tank and it lets me pet it and hand feed it :) careful for it not to fall out when doing this though

  • lol i got a red devil it is about 12 inches and a red oscar if they wer in ur tank the blood parot wold probabley get klled

  • WOW! 12 inch red devil, that's nice. Yeah, I guess they would devour my poor parrot :)

  • lol i did that to my moms porit and she fliped out on me i thoght she was going to kill me but it was worth it lol cool

  • I guess it's perfectly normal and fun :D I moved my parrot to a much bigger tank now and it still does this. Parrots are very outgoing fish, just watch out not to hurt it :)

  • I'm trying to get mine to be more "hand friendly". I do like to go to the glass and he/she will come over in an amusing way. LOL!

  • hahahaha amazing story, also a bit sad, I hate it when fish get stupid! Well, this was just a temporary tank, the blood parrot was with 3 dwarf gouramis and one flowerhorn parrot. Now, I moved the bunch to a 45 gallons and the parrot is the king of the castle, he/she is VERY happy :) Thanks for your comment.

  • what other fish do u have in there with him,her the blood parrot cool trick careful it dosent fall out and damage its self my oscar did that too when he was little but then he got bigger and stronger and grew larger teeth and would even jump when i looked over the tank and it would hurt when he got me on the FACE or the hand trying to recive food but on day he got cocky and jumped up as useal and fell to the floor damaging his side and fins so he never jumped for his food again.thanks.
