Tomovox- What a wonderful Marvelettes fan you are and so knowledgeable- a Marvin Gaye song. I spent two hors driving everyone crazy in work before I read your note. Again, thanks for being such a great fan and indulging an obsessive's delirium over a beautiful song. It's probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Why is it kept "under a bushel" as they say? A true fan of all Marvelettes admirers
@1poppopken Hi Ken! I really love the love you have for the Marvelettes and this song! Yes, it is an amazingly beautiful song. I think the entire album this was taken from is one fantastic song after another, but this is a true standout. I hope you got the lyrics I sent you!
I have a big favor to ask. I notice in the collage of your beautifully choreographed scenes from a night at the sympony with the Marvelettes, that there is a shot of the sheet music that was used.. Is there any chance i could copy/ see/ purchase the sheet music with the music and especially the lyrics.? It wiuld really mean a lot to me. This has to be my most favoritwe song of all time. It's exquisite!
@poppopken Hello, I'm afraid that sheet music is actually for a Marvin Gaye song. I really love that you love this song so much so I'm going to try to get the lyrics for you, so stand by...
@jamar22100 I ordered my copy of "More Hits" last week and can't wait to get it! It seems lately, I've been really getting back into listening to my Supremes albums. Recently ordered the "Lost And Found" cd set, "More Hits" and am trying to track down the CD version of "Sings Country And Pop." That one is hard to find, it seems and pretty expensive. I have the vinyl LP and the version released on cassette tape already, but really would like to get it on a CD. The search continues!
I also have to get Dance With The Contours and Say You The Monitors Motown Anthology they recorded a version of Show Me You Can Dance and in my opinion its better then The Miracles version.
@jamar22100 You're gonna LOVE those cds! The Monitors' cd is full of great tracks. I do like their version of "Show Me..." (but my heart is still with the Miraces' version because of Claudette's vocals!) I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll find that Richard Street has some interesting things to say about the Monitors' recordings. One of the songs I flipped over on the cd is "It Only Happens When Love Is Gone". That one is one of those roll-the-car-windows-down-and-blast-lt-loud songs!
Yes you said it tomovox. They were the bridge. The track list is on amazon.com. It might not happend but i would love to see The Marvelettes with a dvd of performences. There just my all time favorite female group.
@jamar22100 That would be THE icing on the cake! Those ladies really had some jaw-dropping moves. I remember bringing home a dvd of the old Hullabaloo show where the group performed "Don't Mess With Bill" and my mom, her friend and EVERYONE being very, very impressed with those moves they did. We kept coming back to that clip over and over. It was nice too, to hear Katherine and Gladys performing the backing vocals live over the Andantes on the original music track. Let's keep hoping!
@jamar22100 Yes, let's get the word out so that EVERYBODY will snap this up, making it a best-seller! I plan on buying (at least) two sets. It's well worth whatever it costs to have the final four albums AND we're getting the mono mixes of the "Pink Album" and "Sophisticated Soul!"
@tomovox I gotta have that lost and found disc. I no there"s production by Smokey, Norman, and William Mickey Stevenson. The also have a Holland Dozier Holland production on You Lost The Sweetest Boy.
@jamar22100 Hi Jamar! This is going to be amazing! I had no idea the girls did a version of "You Lost The Sweetest Boy." That should be really something to hear. The thing about the Marvelettes is that they really were the bridge between the Supremes and Martha And The Vandellas- The Marvelettes could det down and funky, but they could turn around and do something very pop and sophisticated. Can't wait til this set comes out!
This also takes me to the time that sang Little Girl Blue..but I think Little Girl Blue which is on the flip side of As Long As I know Hes Mine may be back as far as 1964..so that shows the marvelettes were singing similar tunes in the early days..
omg this is so smooth..i jus discovered it..i dont remember it ..but hav listened to the marvelettes since please mr postman when it first came out..poor marvelettes..so Forgotton..so overlooked. so underrated
@blkshepherd well, my friend, as long as there are avenues like youtube and people who like all sorts of music like you, the Marvelettes will never be forgotten- I do think it's a shame they aren't better known, but when you see the number of people who view their music here on youtube and all the great comments, I think it shows they're actually picking new fans with each new generation!
@tomovox sounds like a great song to ride down the road on warm end of summer evening as the sun goes down and the night lights of the city comes on..a faint cool beeze blowing while you watch the sun set on the city..i like this dreamy style ..didnt know the marvelettes would sing a song like this..learn something everyday. thanks so much for posting..it also shows the marvelettes recorded more than originally thought. Motown has so much unreleased material from all its artists.
@blkshepherd What an incredible description of this song! There is something about it that creates a definite mood and scene and I just love the way you've shaped that image. This song is from their 1967 album, "The Marvelettes" and listening to it, you find out the Marvelettes really could handle anything from soul, to pop to grand material like this song. The producers really did an excellent job with this album.
Thanks again for such a great comment on this song!
@tomovox I really wished the Marvelettes had did more songs like this..it shows another softer smoother side of them. I think if they had crossed over with more material like this..they would have lasted a lot longer..sometimes you have to move out of your comfort zone and experiment. You never know what you may get. This song is fabulous. Its the weeknd (Friday) and its a Perfect feel for the end of the week..beautiful..
@blkshepherd@blkshepherd Interestingly, Katherine Anderson commented that Motown seemed reluctant to let the Marvelettes mature. Motown was reluctant to release "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," because some at the company thought it was a bit too "jazzy." It happens at all record companies: you hit with a record and usually you're forever kept in that "box" or whatever image gave you the hit. Motown thought "Hunter" was too much of a departure from the Marvelettes' sound...
(cont.) Smokey Robinson and others knew the group could go further. Search on youtube for "I Can't Turn Around," "Message To Michael" "Young And In Love" and "I Know Better" all from the "Pink Album," and you'll see that others felt as you do that the Marvelettes could definitely handle more complicated and sophisticated material. I think the group was a perfect bridge between the Supremes and Martha & The Vandellas- The Marvelettes could go from deep soul to symphonic pop- and do it all well!
@tomovox oh my goodness..talkin with you about the marvelettes old stuff..while playin it in the background..and it is a hot late summer saturday evening..near 3pm..take me to another time and because we are sharing the same Time era with someone who Know the era..is pure Gold. its Nothing like comparing and sharing the same Time Era..Golden Motown..the first Decade..1960-1970.If u have not checked out K. Anderson book on the Marveltettes.check it out. will give u Great Insight about the group
such a deliciously sweet mouth watering wonder~full little treasure !! that sums up the adding of love sweet love + a beautiful evening in bliss~ full romantic endeavors.oh how I yearn for those luscious heart swelling kisses under the tender moon.
@sunchilde68 I was really knocked out when I read your comment; what you do with words! That's an incredible perspective on this song. I absoulutely love the way you express yourself- thanks for the fantastic comment!

@doowopman49 Hi Tom! I wish I had the privelege too of being able to see the two groups in their prime. The Chantels definitely had "it" too. I'm glad you like the posting and that you added your comment here! Thanks!
@doowopman49 I'm ALWAYS happy to talk to another music lover, and I like that you mentioned the Chantels. I love and adore the Marvelettes, but it's good too, to always learn about and appreciate all the other great women who started and lead the way for the "Girl Group" era.
@gayboylaca What a fantastic comment! I absolutely love it- "Style and grace." How well it even sums up the whole Marvelettes "Pink Album." I really appreciate having you comment here!
Rest in Peace Gladys! I loved you and your voice from the moment I was introduced to Motown...I send my love to your family and friends (It was not long ago I was commenting on this song and video)
@smltwnboy I know just the person who could come up with an extended mix, if it hasn't been done already; check out ptownmotowndj- he comes up with the most amazing re-mixes and extended mixes and I'll bet you anything he could do miracles with a re-mix of this fantastic song.
What a wonderful visual interpretation of a totally majestic, haunting song. Does anyone know where to get the lyrics? I can't locate them, have tried all the usual places under both "Tonight was made for love" and "This night was made for love."
@poppopken Wow! Thank you for such kind comments on the video! This song always made me visualize a night out at the symphony- a black tie affair all the way. I like your use too of the word "majestic;" that definitely applies so well.
As far as the lyrics, I wish I knew too where to find them- if anyone knows, it may be the boyfromxtown. He's very knowledgeable about so much connected with Motown (I hope he does't mind my saying that!)
@theboyfromxtown well, hello! I always like reading your comments at the Soulful D site, so it was great to see your comment here! Yes, I agree- the title always kinda puzzled me- I've seen it listed both ways. Either way though, it's such a beautiful song! Thanks for commenting!
@mmikeyphilly that makes me feel really good to read that! it's such an elegant and classy song that it always made me feel like this is what the Marvelettes would sound like if they had performed at a venue like the Philharmonic or the Lyric Opera House with a full symphony backing them. I wanted to really showcase the ladies to demonstrat just how versatile a group they had become. Thanks again for that comment!
@stanner72 she really is amazing on this- the group as a whole shines throughout this album. this is one of the best and majestic from the group and motown.
