Was it a bodhran. I have a bodhran (Irish style drum) and have thought about making it into a banjo also. Did you trim down the depth of the drum (i.e., the width of the sides)? My bodhran is about 18 or 20 inches diameter.

It was an ebay purchase. It's 12 inches and cost ten or fifteen dollars.
