@drhemani Thank you-and to all who now will throw other sarcams...get a life.Thank you for this concert footage,Maybe it was thanks to people likr you I got the see and hear SHAKTI in Stockhom-
saw remember shakti live three times, and esp. the first time I was so amazed, I tripped. seriously, I was out of my mind, literally, I cannot recall a certain section of the performance, I just know it was outstanding. when I returned to earth, I was standing right in front of JM, leaning to the stage, arms raised, eyes and mouth wide open, unable to remember standing up. lol.
there's nothing better in the world than watching McLaughlin smile at his bandmates in admiration and joy. :-)
@VMGIAN I sincerely apologize! I saw your comment before I got that far into the video. In the beginning its sargam, then it moves on to konnakol / bol shashtri! again, my apologies! :D
A remarkable thing about this group is that the music often feels edgy, like it's pushing the limits of what's possible, yet at the same time the level of musicianship is such that you feel there is nothing they can't do.
Although the band was named "5 Peace band", the song "5 peace band" was never associated with the band as far as I can tell. Mclaughlin wrote it before he formed the band with Chick (the remember Shakti tour that this was like 9 years ago). He does have a recording of this on the album 'Floating Point', with a different band.
Yeah I remember Shakti! They still sound incredible.....When I was 15 years old (1976) I saw the first incarnation of this group in Bayonne (France) in a open Roman Amphitheater. The festival opened with John McLaughlin/Shakti, then Weather Report with Jaco, Larry Coryell solo, then Billy Cobham/George Duke Band and finally Herbie Hancock Group with Wah Wah Watson! It was one of the hottest summers on record, and the green moroccan hash didn't hurt the experience either! Memories........

Mclaughlin wrote it before he formed the band with Chick (the remember Shakti tour that this was like 9 years ago). kakka.., I disagree about them having lost speed as they have aged. If anything John specifically is even faster than in his youth. You need to look at some more of these vids. I just watched one were John shreds like any under the Yngwie spell. Only with much better phrasing. Also, with the Trio with Paco and Al he shreds Al under the table keeping up with Paco, a feat in itself, without missing a beat or lacking in melody.
i agree, and the tone he has here in this show is really hiding the notes hes picking...probably on purpose, but if you watch the video hes really shredding
I played the first Womad festival in Shepton Mallet with the Sons of Arqa, it was 9.15 on sunday morning and Zakir Hussain sat in with us, after 10 minutes or so we just had to let him go, I couldn't believe anybody could whip up so much power at that time in the morning.
As a follow up to my earlier comment that seems to have ruffled some feathers. I am from that era, I do remember seeing the MO (both versions) live as well as Shakti. I recently listened again to the BBC's (shiver inducing) Shakti live sessions from '77 and defy anyone to say that it was not from a different planet to this. C/W Metheny-esqe soft guitar tone 'R-S' is so 'safe'. The younger JM was an inspiration simply because he took chances and went places this JM is unable to recall even exist.
Whatever happened to those wonderful micro-tonal acoustic guitar inventions and intricate rhythms with the original band? This is just polite coffee table jazz rock smooth fusion with a tabla isn't it? Or am I'm simply getting old and grumpy and chocolate doesn't taste as good either and there's bad chemicals in the water and UK train travel is too expensive?? Pass the noose...
I totally agree about Shankar, but i think age has caught up with them, they can't play as fast as they could earlier. they probably slowed it down so that it's not too taxing on them.
LMAO. I kinda agree. The lack of his acoustic burns. The fury through the microphone is far more vicseral and effective than through the pick up. The rhythms are still there.
It is neither coffee table nor smooth though! IMO. Much prefer the original. But JM was never gonna do the same thing twice.
How could anyone say this is smooth polite coffee table jazz? Its far more complex intricate subtle than original Shakti! When you have played the most complex Indian jazz ragas melodies improvs n rhtythms on the planet, where do you go as you grow as a person & musician over 30 years?...Remember Shakti, that's where!
@bazonics I contacted MEZZO and they said there were no plans to market this video in the US. Amazon does not have it in the USA or GB. Don't know about availability through other sources in the EU.
Shrinivas plays the soul of this track with his magic mnadolin! he's simply unbeatable and a class apart. And the others especially Shankar is superfine. and incredible ghattam by Selvaganesh.
ahora entiendo mucho mas la vola en que se fue despues Jonas Hellborg en algunos discos. Debió ser parte de Shakti!!!!
