i met Bob Nystrom at The Prudential Center a couple of months ago. He was there watching his son play against the Devils. i got a picture with him. Great guy and awsome player!
To think, this was the year after Bernie Parent was forced to retire from a Permanent Eye Injury. Out of curiosity, if the Flyers had Bernie Parent in Goal back then in 1980, do you think that the Flyers would have beaten the Islanders?
Just remember, Bernie Parent was the Flyers Conn Smythe Trophy Winner(Playoff MVP) when they won their Stanley Cups back in 1974 and 1975.
This is something that has been playing in my Head over, and over.
No one will ever know, but then again, who cares? Injuries are part of the game in any sport, Bernie caught a bad break and it cost him is career. It's like saying "if the NHL didn't change the 1984 playoff format to 2-3-2 at the last minute, could the Islanders have won that 5th cup and defeated the Oilers? No one will ever know.
If you remember though the Isles were dominant at home in the 1980 finals. The Flyers lost every game on the road and split with us in Philly.
Plus, the Isles had the #1 ranked PP and PK and the Flyers took some really bad penalties and the Isles made them pay for it. The Isles were a VERY, VERY good team back then, arguably one of the greatest well rounded teams the NHL has ever seen. The Flyers had their chances but in the end the Flyers gave the Isles too many chances to win......and the Isles capitalized on that.
You're probably right! The Flyers were Bullies, more like "The Broad Street Bulllies", and the Islanders were a Very Diciplined Team behind Al Arbour.
The Flyers never did change their ways, but losing Game 1 in Philadelphia really did hurt them, and I was glad to see the Flyers lose! Once I knew that the Islanders took 1 in Philadelphia, I just knew that the Stanley Cup was theirs!
All I can say is, it was about time that the Islanders taught the Flyers a lesson!
What team do you follow by the way? The Isles have been my team since 1979, the year I got into hockey. I grew up right off of Hempstead Trnpke in West Hempstead on Long Island. When they scored that goal that Saturday afternoon the entire town exploded. My Mother the huge Trottier fan was going nuts.
First of all mrceebees, I love any team playing the Flyers if you want to know, and I have been following the Islanders ever since 1980 when there was An Intense Rivalry between the Flyers and the Islanders that goes back to 1975 when the Islanders almost came back from 0-3 to beat these same Flyers in the Playoffs.
But truthfully, I am a Hardcore Boston Bruins Fan. I was only a Senior in High School back in 1980, I was ecstatic seeing the Islanders win the Stanley Cup.
He won 1 cup with us, then he said something which got his ass traded. Right after the Isles won the cup he got interviewed and decided he would "VOICE" his opinion that unless he was the starting goaltender the next season, he would ask to be traded. It was real tacky and he shouldn't have done that, but he got his wish and got traded to the worst team in the league, the Colorado Rockies. They moved to New Jersey where he played for a little while and then ended with Philly in 1987.
That really sucked mrceebees14! If I was Chico, I would have kept my Mouth shut, and see how much longer I would have stayed with the Islanders during their 4 Consecutive Stanley Cup Championships. When you're on a team capable of bringing home the Rings, does it really matter whether or not you will be a Starting? For God's Sake, even the Waterboys and The Equiptment Men also get Stanley Cup Rings like the Players do, and probably get to keep the Stanley Cup for only one day as well.
If you know Chico, even as an announcer and ULTRA homer for the Devils, you know he can't but open his mouth. I loved Chico, but he is a 16 year old in an older mans body, but man was he lightning fast back then.
He won't admit it, but EVERY TIME he has been invited back with his x-teammates for an old timers function or game he has an excuse. He to date has NEVER participated in anything that deals with the cups teams eventhough he won with us.
Mike Bossy, Dennis Potvin, Bobby Nystron, Bob Bourne, John Tonelli, Butch Goring, Stefan Pearsson, Billy Smith, and let's not forget Glenn(Chico) Resch.
Those were the days! Back when those Flyers were the Islanders' Bitches!
i saw the tribute of the ''new york islanders'' down here and they lost, but it was a hell of a new york islander team. the ''islanders'' slapped the pucks harder than any other nhl teams that i saw in person on ice. i became convinced of their supremacy in the early 80's.

Someone tell me. Whatever happened to Chico Resch?
Jiltedin2007 2 years ago
I think he went to the Flyers...I'm not sure

Yeah, I think so too. After the Islanders won their 4 Stanley Cups.
