The Communist government's responce was to downplay the effects of the event, misreport the numbers of people to make it seem much smaller than it was and categorize those people as fringe, reactionary zelots. Glen Beck's Restoring Honor rally had the same affect. Media misreported the numbers, the nature of the event and downplayed it significance.

If you're familiar with her, you'll see she does this all the time, she talks over people and keeps going until they stop so she can keep going. Shouting the loudest or talking the longest doesn't make a person right but it does come off as strong/assertive which is partly why you found it appealing.

And, yes, the term is "regulatory capture" and, yes, the Tea Party thinks if we get rid of the regulators the market will magically fix itself. How about regulators who do their job and a Fed that's more transparent and accountable? It reminds me of the thinking behind NCLB -- if a school isn't performing well, gut its budget to make its job even harder.
