These dogs were bred to fight and kill. They are extremely powerful and dangerous. They are NOT good pets for the average owner. Do not buy one because you think it is cute!
@ViolentEncounter The only ignorant people are the ones that believe this video. I adopted one of these dogs, and I promise you it will kill any smaller dog it encounters. It's in its blood.
Sorry you're mad about reality, maybe if you close your eyes and concentrate really hard you can make it go away! Good luck!
@RamenReturns It all depends on the dog and how you raise it. I have a five year old shar pei, Lucy, and she is the sweetest dog ever, we can trust her around my one year old brother, she's such a good dog. She has NEVER EVER in her five years attacked, snapped, or been a threat to anyone or anything. Our shar pei rot mix will bite your ass, but Lucy will just come sit by you and wait to be petted. It just depends on the dog and owner.
My baby Sara made me laugh out loud from the first day i got her, every day, for the past two years. I love all kinds of dogs, but the Shar Pei is funnier.
Thank you so much for posting this up, I don't think we get this programme in England so am thrilled to be able to watch it on here. I've got a Bear Coat and he's adorable. I can really relate to the lady who says she can't be without a Pei
@RJVermillion It depends on where you are in the US, but if you live in a pretty populated area, you might be able to get one from a rescue group that specializes in Sher-Pei's. I know there are some in the VA/DC/MD area, as well as New York and California. If you are looking for a puppy, you will have to find a breeder. Try using Google or Bing for that and get as much info as you can before buying. Good luck.
The lady says ppl stop forgetting their dogs and eating them? That's why the breed shar pei r going away? Eating their dog? WoW!! How professional is that for a dog trainer.
@Stunname She is referring to a time in China where people were literally starting to death and may have had to resort to eating whatever animals they had in their household. China's staple meat is pork, but during the 1950s, there was a shortage.
@hd92122 Yes, the brushcoat or the bearcoat (the bearcoat is outside of the breed standard). I have extremely sensitive skin and my shar-pei is a brushcoat. We got him from Dee Dee Wells. He has never given me, my husband, or any of our friends a skin allergy. We cuddle him a lot, basically treat him like a baby. He is also quite soft, unlike the horsecoat shar-pei, whose skin texture is that is sandpaper. I would say that my shar-pei is definitely softer than a beagle or a doberman.
I have one for adoption.Unfortunately, where I live (City) there are buttheads who do not understand the breed..mistreat, etc...I brought on back to health.
My shar pei is the greatest dog I've ever had. Although he isn't 100% He is an Akita mix. You could not ask for a more loyal and trustworthy dog. Perfect pet.
i have one my mom paid 1500 for the goddamn thing i thought it was going to be cool these dogs are as stupid as any other shit up your house chew on everything
all those wrinkles are what make this breed unhealthy, americans created this problem because they wanted the breed to be more cudly but they did not think how it would affect the animal, this is cruel people should not mess with a animals DNA just leave them how they should be, Traditional
@CharlieRussell03 they are not all the same, mine is a 3 year old traditional shar pei and she's always clean, but she does'nt have many wrinkles only on her face ! you must have the western type :D
LOL 2000$? ... Love my sharpei...i think im lucky to have 1 and also to have a rare "blue" sharpei to. 2000$...seriously...if that's a price of a yellow colourd one...than i could eventually sell mine for double the price-_-;
Fun facts: Diego Maradona (coach of Argentinian FIFA soccer team) owned one in hes family, got bitten.
@criptanizer some of them can be, the western type are more difficult because of all the wrinkles but the traditional shar pei are verry easy to look after, obviously i cant say for a mix breed but the more wrinkles it has the harder it will be to keep clean and the western type get a lot of skin disease also :D
@superlou1s no they weren't bred for being pit dogs. they were bred to guard royalty at first then they were adapted to farms thats how they became known for the fighting. but u r right they r awesome
god u aint kidding when ya say they were breed to guard, my sharpei wont let noboby in my house without growling and showing her teeth..and shes only 8 months !
i have a Pei as well...he's 8 yrs.old, very sweet dog!cautious breed though that tends to end up to aggressiveness...i say this 'coz less than a year ago i had to leave him at the hospital overnight for medical reasons...and that totally changed him,now he's always nervous, restless and even bites...i love my Pei i've had him since he was only a pup,it just breaks my heart that this happens to him when he should just enjoy the rest of his life...

don't do it, they are fucking arsehole creatures. They are bullies - they will bark all the time at nothing, but run away if you try to pet them . they are shit
Then why is my dog (shar-pie) very loyal, always sits next to and never runs away when i pet it? Oh that's right they are called MANS BEST FRIEND for a fucken reason, it the trainers fault!
Yes it is the trainer's fault. Dogs are amazing. They protect their human carer. Tell me, does your dog protect you so much that it will bark at a possible attacker etc but shy away if the same possible 'attacker/friend/friend's child/postman/gasman' walks toward it? If yes - sharpei equals classic bully like tendencies = arsehole animal.
Heard of nature vs nurture? maybe the arsehole is the owner who shouldn't have a dog in the first place or never bothered to learn how to raise one - your experience was perhaps with an inbred dog from a puppy mill? If so I hope you learned your lesson. Why not get a nice fish? I hear they are quiet....
Learned MY lesson? It's the fuckhead next door who has the dog. NEWSFLASH ! Good news is that my suburb has rid itself of this animal and the dog is gone!!!! My other neighbour told me this week of the great news! !! Champers all around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree with u!!! You are totally right about the nature vs. nurture aspect of the situation: many ppl. lay most of the blame on specific dog breeds w/o realizing that the way that dogs are being nurtured is the deciding factor on the dogs' temperament. We humans always blame others for our own faults and instead of turning dog breeds into scapegaots, we really should take full responsibility for our own actions---u hear that MissTennille?

The teary eye is caused by dryness. You could have avoided everything if you put Neosporin or Vit E oil in their eyes once a week or as per necessity. Most vets are ill-educated in Shar Pei. The breed has no higher degree of health problems than other dogs. Some Breeders are very irresponsible and exchange healthy dogs for ones with super-abundant wrinkles because they sell better

I was gathering my stuff up and opened the door a little but not all the way, the poor dog walked right into the door headfirst, haha.
scottcoleatgmail; Don't blame any of this on the breed. They apparently are problems to this particular dog. My friends Shar pei can see me coming a block away, he's no oilier than my black lab and just as friendly.

I mean, look at their skin. its like their skin is molten, or absorbed to much water. I dunno what people want from such ugly dogs, but If they are happy with them... well, then have a wonderfull life with your sharpei
I have one, she doesn't have any health problems. Though eye problems are pretty common, but you can help this by cleaning around their eyes every once in awhile.
They are fantastic...there are actually 3 types. While the coat you're thinking about is most common, I have a 'brush' hair rescue...she remains smaller, a little less wrinkly, but has the softest hair...allergy free!

Sharpei's are a beautiful interesting breed and breeding the problems out of them will be a good thing.
