How to use Fraps

I was under the same misleading impression. Fraps, I thought, would be able to record the screen, not just games. Any suggestions for what one could use to capture just the desktop or screen in a video format?

Do you know if there is anyway to set FRAPS to a set amount of time of recording? So it will stop recording and save the file at a given time automatically without someone having to close it manually?

If you're using the trial version you can only record for 30 seconds. You have to buy the full version.
