when people say stop driving SUV's they really mean stop transporting 1 person in a SUV. an SUV is a very efficient vehicle when filled with people, like a mini bus. So if you are filling it with 5-6 people then fine... Its the people who have them and just commute solo or social in them with only 1 passenger.. in short greater efficiency > drilling

Ellis is an idiot. Drilling does provide a hedge against traders betting on futures of oil. The longer we wait to drill, the more speculation is going to drive costs up. Even if supply does not increase in 5 years, the price of oil based on speculation would be lower. Everyone who votes against more oil production or off-shore drilling is going to have their rear end kicked out of congress.

If there were a way for me to buy a car that had excellent fuel economy, 4WD or AWD, the ground clearance of an SUV and was sturdy enough not to get beat to shit on rutted and washboarded dirt roads, I would have done it already as would my neighbors.

As much as we have discovered since then, as advanced as our rigs are, using the latest seismic technology- we have not been able to produce as much oil as we did in 1970. Today we produce half of what we did back then. Becoming the worlds largest supplier is not realistic. We have neither the capital or the natural resources with which to do it.

We're not going to drill our way out of this problem. If we could, I'd say "Put an oil rig in my front yard!" The problem is much more complicated than that. We will be in steady decline in oil production no matter what we do. We'll drill- we have to. But the only permanent solution is conservation and renewables. Act today as if gas is $15/gallon and invest the $10+ in renewables. When the price spikes- you be ready for it.

We can. actually drill our way out of it. Even though most of our oil comes from Canada and Mexico, OPEC still controls enough oil production to effect the market. If we take a strong stance, they will listen to us. Threaten to become as big a factor in the global supply as OPEC, and they will crank the spigots open, lowering the price.

Actually, metro... the high price of oil has made oil shale affordable to extract. Anything over $80.00 per barrel and oil shale is suddenly very attractive. But if we were able to use our own supplies, the jackasses on the left would lose a little more control over the little people and we just can't have that, can we?

The actual price of oil on the basis of supply and demand is only about $75/barrel.  The price is almost double that from speculation and the fact the dollar is very weak right now. We pay more because our dollar buys less, plus concern about war in the middle-east. US reserves are inadequate to put a dent in the supply & demand part of the equation, and also does nothing for the strength of dollar. There are refining issues now which have nothing to do with oil supply.

If we "lower" the fuel economy of cars by 1 gallon we will NOT save gas lol. If we magically raised the fuel economy of EVERY CAR in america by 7 MPG (taking ten years to cycle out all current cars and replace them with these 7 MPG more efficent ones) then sure we would use less oil, but what you'd have to buy you'd STILL be paying 4 dollars and up. And the price would go up to compensate for what we're not buying anymore (in the future). Drill here, Drill now, Find a viable alternative fuel.

VW just presented a diesel Polo that gets 70 mpg and produces less emissions than a hybrid, for under 20k, only way to get better mileage than that is to ride that flying pig.
