Everything The Who did between 1989-1996 (not much) with all the additional players was... odd. I was glad when Pete felt his hearing had improved enough to start thrashing out on the electric again. Even without Moonie, they did some amazing shows between 2000-2002, and the Concert For NYC in the wake of 9/11 was FANTASTIC.
@dongtingwong gagagagagaga can't stop laughing @ that! lol I like the OZ man(not half as much) but him and his"band" don't have s@@t compaired to these men! 1;58-2:49man WOW!
@nickmandl From what I heard, during the rehearsals, Gary Glitter accidentally hit Roger in the face with his mic stand and that was why he needed the eye patch.
@dsisa27 a dead junkie no the man died like a real rock star should full of drugs with a hooker in his bed at 50 or so years old not like they modern fags like coldplay who drink green tea before a gig and chant. im sorry but rock and roll is dying on its ass we need more superstars not sad fucks
@j45112 Pete was suffering from tinnitus and aprtial deafness. In fact, he had this problem since '67 or '68, but by late 80's, it got bad to a point that, when he agreed to do a reunion tour, he relegated himself to acoustic guitar so it would minimize damage to his hearing. In fact, even their 2011 Quadrophenia tour nearly didn't happen because of his damaged hearing.
That's the sad thing about The Who. Their great sound is meant to be loud. But it cost them.
@ejdbk I will agree Kenny Jones was a mistake, but Zak Starkey is not only the son of Ringo Starr, he was Keith's protegee. And of course, he is DAMN good. He is worthy of Keith's old spot.
I don't about The Ox, though. He's much tougher to replace.
yeah, maybe if they just put zak on drums,i would continue listening to them, but they put kenny first, then they put all these useless additions to the live band(saxophonists, keyboardest, rythem guitarist) WTF,if the line up was daltry, townshend, zak and john,it would have been ok,but they really fucked up the who after keith's death, and they should have stopped after john entwistle's death
and yeah, zak used to call moon "uncle keith",ringo starr and keith were best friends
Entwistle did NOT kick ass and take names: He kicked ass; but, he was too busy playing killer bass to take names. I think he had a stenographer take the names...
As a bass player I listen & try to learn from a lot of bassists. John Entwistle took the bass to new heights in 1965 with My Generation and then proceeded to lay down fantastic bass lines for the rest of his life. I honestly think there is no equal in rock bass playing. His melodic lines, his sense of rhythm and beat, and his use of the whole neck and scales I think set him apart from his contempories and those that followed. What band, what a bassist!!!!
I think JPJ prefers a more clean sound from the bass, while The Ox played the bass as if it was an actual electric guitar, adding a lot of tremble and effects to it.
It's hard to say which one's better, really. But I'd go for Entwistle.
@johnflaherty and JPJ has like never taken a solo. ive looked all over at Zeppelin live performances and can't see him taking a bass solo, not even ONCE!!!
@johnflaherty No doubt Entwistles better, but I Do very much more prefer JPJs tone.... you dont get lost in his notes, whereas all of the effects bury the best parts of EWs
@slotwinski1414 And that's the thing a lotta people don't get about Entwistle. He had to do all that, his bass had to be loud enough to fill in the gaps, since they were basically a 3-piece band. Practically everyone played lead: lead bass, lead guitar, lead drums... They could use piano, organ, acoustic guitars and stuff like that on their studio albums.
But on stage? They had to do what they did live, especially Entwistle, so their sound wouldn't lose that richness from the studio versions.
I prefer the usual Who band, but this isn't bad. And I do like Zak Starkey. He seems to be keeping the spirit of Keith alive, while still playing like himself. As far as I'm concerned, he's been the only one worthy of filling that drum stool since the great loss of Keith. And now that John has left us too, well, it feels kinda empty. Though I do still have a great deal of love for Roger and Pete.
And would you just LOOK at the size of that crowd. Of COURSE this band are still relevant!
awesome guitar solo and awesome bass solo, the ox, a truly legendary rock bassist, btw, anyone know who's the person playing the electric guitar here?
what makes the ox show so fantastic is that he is able to do with a bass the work of a bassist, a rythm guitar and often even a lead guitar leaving pete free to exercise his genius as freely as possible. pete is a brilliant composer, but john's talent makes pete's compositions possible to perform
But you have to consider that he is 65 years old this year. He is an old man.But still, I don't know any band with so much energy on stage today as The Who, or The Two they are called these times. Most 16 year olds wouldn't agree with me, but to H*** with them;)
Just to say one thing to defend Mr. Daltrey would be how many people could carry a tune at his age. The type and style of singing he was asked to do at 20 or 30 at the age of over 60? Too bad, but it is still the Who.

Townshend playing acoustic saying it was because of his hearing. Look at The Ox whose hearing was worse than Townshend's still pounding away at the bass. Stop being a wuss Pete!
I read that he wanted to go by himself on tour and perform the whole thing on acoustic. Sure glad that the whole band came along with him. A few tracks, cool- but two hours of pete and an acoustic is a little much.

why is townshend playing acoustic so much?
THAshredder42 3 years ago
I read that he wanted to go by himself on tour and perform the whole thing on acoustic. Sure glad that the whole band came along with him. A few tracks, cool- but two hours of pete and an acoustic is a little much.

So he can feel the vibrations...he can't hear what he plays anymore.

I wish they would wear flashy stage clothes. They look like they just walked off the street. Maybe it looks this way as it is an outdoor event. I like to see the rock spectacular.

How about a flashy outfit.
Not just street clothes. I don't wanna make a big deal about it.
Hendrix never wore street clothes. Anyway, I am a BIG fan of this band.

they use to dress all super flamboyant pre-tommy.
They are old dudes now, they'd look kind of retarded wearing that shit now. (or 13 years ago, whatever)

They were into flashy stage clothes during the sixties and seventies. Townshend in a white jumpsuit, Entwistle in a leather skeleton suit, and so on.
I'd like to think they just outgrew that.

Hmmm...perhaps.
I still think they should be wearing something other than regular clothing.
Showmanship.
I think they lost that over the years.
