In 1968 LBJ signed the Civil Right Legislation act,effective ending the Dixiecrats reign in congress. Disgusted, they turned away from the democratic party and became independent, wanting to start their own party. However, the republican party, (which had been very weak since the the Eisenhower presidency), was more than happy accepted them.

Not getting much in this argument, but the overwhelming majority of the Republicans in Congress voted and pushed for the Civil Rights Legislation, by a *much* larger margin that the Democrats. Why would Dixiecrats vote for a Republican when George Wallace also was running for President? Nixon voted for every equal rights bill there was and was even the one who started Affirmative Action. He was for retributions for blacks. Why would racists vote for him?

There are more than two candidates in this race. Bob Barr from the Libertarian Party, Cynthia McKinney from the Green Party, Brian Moore from the Socialist Party and Ralph Nader.
