Does anyone no who directed this vid. There is exceptional camera work in this. And the whole plot going along with the lyrics. Its ironic how many people relate to this song.I would say this wood stand up to top 5 best rock vids of all time.
...Oh, and one last thing. Don't be surpised 'Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame,' that when you FINALLY induct them (hopefully in my lifetime), that Neil doesn't show. He cares nothing for the limelight, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Alex and Geddy accepting the award.
Rush, hands down, have some, if not, THEE best lyrics in the history of rock. Only this group can incorporate the lyrics, "Any escape might help disprove the unattractive truth, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth," into a cohesive and melodic song, that flows off the tongue, without one realizing the complexity of 'said' lyrics. It just fits, and that's Rush.
Rush has been my favorite band since I was in High School in the late seventies. This song always echoed a song that a DJ used to play every morning when I was a little kid growing up in Beaumont, Texas. It was named "Little Boxes" and was sung by a folk group called Womenfolk. Now I think it's the theme song to "Weeds" and been covered by a bunch of famous musicians. The woman who wrote Little Boxes was inspired by driving over a hill coming into California and seeing endless suburbs.Checkitout
what is most interesting, and amazing, is that this song (and video) is still completely relevant in 2011. If not more so!
Update the cars, the clothes, and the general styles, and you have a timeless observation of the (unfortunate) way things are in big cities. It is a sad comment, but a beautiful (and hopeful, i think) song. Any song that can still be relevant 20+ years later is something! Check out Jacob Moon's live rooftop version. You'll be glad you did! :)
I see on the side where it says they're playing at Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans 12/21 They're not!!!That's GOLD & THE RUSH, a local, unsigned band. Just thought people would want to know in case anyone was making plans to go...
My first day at Plymouth Salem High School in Nov 1993, felt and looked just like this video. I was so lost, alone and hated it. HUGE culture shock coming from Inkster and S.W. Detroit. This song is beautiful yet haunting. Fkn 5,000 students going between 2 gynormous bulidings, Salem/Canton H.S. I thaught that shit was only in movies. Now days they go between 3 schools Salem/Canton/Plymouth. I couldnt imagine me being 15 out there nowdays. I used to say just add water and you have cardboard ppl.
Kewl seeing my ol' high school again. I remember when they filmed this @ L'Amoreaux CI, it was the most exciting thing that happened in our HS @ the time.
haha the footage in the video of the neighbourhoods and highschool are right by where I live. I like to go for a walk there on occasion to live the Subdivisions video "in person" . (It's Seagrave Cr., Sandy Haven Dr, and L'Amoreaux High School, in case you were wondering)
Yeah, I was wondering. Ive been trying to find out where it was filmed so I can look it up on google and see how it looks NOW (a lot can change since 1982). Which parts where filmed on those streets, the aerial views or street shots?
@zambonitron Both parts (aerial view and street shots) were filmed on the two streets I mentioned (as well as Pale Moon cres). And yes, you are correct - 1:34 is #113 Seagrave Cres, and 5:01 is # 81 Pale Moon Cres. I'm gonna PM you all the other landmarks in the vid.
Youre right.I googled Seagrave Crescent and I found the house at 1:34, the duplex. The block looks nicer now than it did on here. You can even see the address clearly on the high-def streetview. Its 113 Seagrave.
4:50 is on Pale Moon crescent. You can see a shrub near the side of the road. The google view shows the "shrub" now a full-grown tree blocking view of the house.
The music video looks like it shot on something like Kodakchrome. If so, it's very fitting for the era that Rush grew up in. This is what I got from watching the feature documentary on them.
@IThinkYouLookLarvely Neil does do it on the album. That's his voice. It was just handed off to Alex for live performance because Neil was, well, hitting every drum in the history of percussion just then. And I say that with love.
my fav rush song, but the video needs serious work, it needs to be redone, so old, and even the edit timing looks bad, but love the boys of the band, blessings
Love this song, but its hard to listen to because there is a lot of flutter in the audio which is really noticeable when the synth is playing. Is this the way the song actually sounds? I thought this might only happen if the video was taken from an old VHS tape. I have tried various postings of this song on YouTube, but they all have that same issue.

i remember when i was little and my dad introduced this band to me ,id always pretend to play guitar to the song on the bed and jump with a tennis racket rockinout!! best band ever!!!
I remember that video game, and the haircuts, and the quality of video used. They seem like simple days back in the 1980s though tough as a teenager, just like teenagers for all generations.
I still can not beleve that Rush is not in the Rock n Roll hall of fame. They have totally been robbed of that honor, they are a great band with a unique sound and still sound great today!
Can you imagine being the lead singer, playing the organ, and the bass all at the same time? Jesus, I can't even pee straight!! Why do I even bother to go on?
That's Toronto. I think the train at the start is a Go Train transversing the Don Valley Parkway. The city hasn't changed all that much in the last 28 years.
Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs by them. Everytime I hear it, I get the taste of greasy pizza in my mouth and the smell of English Leather in the air. It brings me back to high school. Thank you very much for posting.
