hey BK, just wanted to say I admire your talent and music, the one thing I request is that you come to the east coast!!!!!!!! maybe house of blues in boston, you have some serious fans out there who would love to hear some great tunes from " real life"!!!
Need some advice, I have never had or tried a lovepedal, but they sound Awesome online. i need help choosing between the Amp50 or the Eternity FUSE. Please write back.
BK, im finally going to do my first gig that is going to be on the radio and my nerves are already racking, any advice on what i should do when i do finally have to get up on stage?
I started off reading tab but then studied Classical Guitar at The University of North Texas where I learned to read music. I also had a great teacher when I was in High School who really encouraged me to learn by ears as well. It all counts towards being the best musician you can be!
with the whole playing by ear thing, i didnt know it really was that important until my 3rd year of playing. i got into a guitar tech class at school and my teacher said it really is an amazing gift, that's all i know. still to this day i dont know how to read tabs. i just dont wanna waste my time when i can be playing guitar lol. about 75 percent of the songs i know, i learned by listening to the music, and every once in a while a friend teaches me top play something. i am proud i was blessed.
yea it's true don't start out with tabs, do it by ear. If you want to use tabs just use it to help you get started off, don't do the entire song by tabs.
hey... is that really briann.??? wow.... i wnna play like you.... your very good.. ive played your gemini in guitar hero... wow it was awsome.... a can play it all day.... damn very good...
completely agree with you, when i started at 7,i lived and breathed tabs. but about 5 or 6 years ago i got a really impressive ear that appeared out of nowhere. now when i'm at school, i can play the chords in my head and write songs like im playing the guitar. but ive been in situations where im at a gig and have never played the song. so i just turn on the ear and jump in. it has gotten me so much farther in my playing its just crazy
Also, what you are saying about tabs, and not using your ears, I completely agree on. I have been thinking about it a lot, and I have also been a bit concerned if I am maybe losing a lot of experience when I just google tabs when I want to learn a new song...
So to start with, I am going to get the intro to Gemini by my self. And once that has been done I am going for the rest of the song.
This is unbelievable! just went to my friend yesterday, and we desided to play Guitar Hero II, and we stumbled across this amazing song, Gemini, which we played over and over like ten times before I had to go home. I thought that guy Brian Kahanek was going to be this legend from way back that I still just had not come across, and now I see he has a youtube channel, AND replies to comments!
You are a true blues/jazz musician PERIOD, just by the way you play the music, you can tell it comes from the heart. That lick u just played is a perfect example of a solo. started off nice and mellow, it became mild, then climax, and then back to mild, never mellow again. I play sax and some blues guitar, and this is exactly how its meant to be done! Thanks for keepin this music alive
i have 5 inspirational guitarists that keep me going on playing guitar religiously every day, and you definately are one of them. i appreciate that, you actually read comments made by fans and reply to them, rock on man.
Cheers to you all for coming by and listening. I don't mean to come off harsh in regards to learning by ear... but I truly believe that is the only way to really get on the right track as a true musician. I have used tabs and sheet music to help out and still do.. but there is an art to listening.
i have alot of favorite musicians. i think you are a mix of all of them. your a true inspiration. you'll have to give me a lesson or tips when i see you at namm
Oh yh I am learning your song mostly threw tab , however not all is right so i do have to change alot of it using my hearing . I will get there though learning by ear :D
Your a big inspiration to me , i first heard you on guitar hero 2 along with The Allmond Bro's song Jessica and both songs were full of emotion and you cant express this emotion and dedication threw pressing 5 colourerd buttons ! So i just had to borrow my dads guittar and im currently learning them both right now .
Thanks for getting me into playin 'real' guitar :)
It is my pleasure and honor to inspire another to play. That's what it is all about...Music! Don't get discouraged work through the beginning stages and you will be rewarded!
I have a Fender Starcaster starter kit with a Frontman 15R amp, and i was wondering which i should upgrade first, my guitar, or amp, and what to? If you could reply it would help, thanks! I really love your music!
You're so right here, my friend has a fender strat and my old teacher had several gibson les pauls. I absolute hate the strat, and although i prefer the les pauls, my favourite guitar is still my budget line prs se standard, and i doubt i'll ever buy another electric guitar until i can afford a custom shop prs, and even then it'll only be marginally different to my current one.
i learnt some of gemini by ear and have it on my ipod and i can never get bored of its tuneful wonders!!! thanks brian for creating such a lovely track :) i tried to buy ur album here in england and no1 knew who you were. i was v dissapointed!
Hey, Brian, I love your songs! And I'm not just saying that because I aced Gemini on Medium in GHII, I'm thinking about getting a real guitar. Would you recommend any specific kind or brand?
Thanks. I was thinking about getting a Metallic Blue Strat, I've heard that the Squiers are good beginner guitars. I'll be sure to try the Tele and Les Paul, though.
Hey man, any chance we could get some records of yours here in Brazil ? Wanna listen the whole thing, not just what was youtube'd. I'll pay whatever it takes.
Cost me 64 dollars (discs + shipping + taxes) to get both CDs. Was worth every cent. Loved it, in particular your statement in "Real Life" about manufactured stars: SO TRUE !
What's so cool about your playing is, that there are probably many great past guitarists who you grew up listening to. But in today's music and the guitar being a shrinking item, no one plays it like it was meant to be played. You do a great job Brian. I hope you take over the radio man.
Cheers to you.. and everyone who has posted on my vids and space. I am not too worried about Radio and or "Making it big". Great music and popularity seldom go hand in hand.
actually i do agree. you are both great guitarists. this song reminds a lot of some songs from the album "native tounge" with Poison, to you guys who have heard it.
Hi! Brian I am the one who posted the video you requested as a video response. I have bought you album and my favorite track on there is Gemini. What kinda amp and guitar are you running there.
I hope the video I have put up about gemini has brought you more album sales. I suggest anybody who likes the blues to buy his album. Also what kinda amp and guitar are you running there.
Cheers Jarred! Thanks for helping spread the word. And thanks to all of you on this video for stopping by. The amp I using is my home practice amp - Tech 21 Trademark 10 with a lovepedal COT50 for boost.
Couldn't agree more about tabs, not only is a trained ear great for learning songs fast and independently, but it also makes for a great party trick when you can play any song right the first time, people do like to sing songs at parties :p Tabs are often wrong anyway.
dude you totally rule! Gemini is my fav song on GH2, and you influenced me to pick up a real guitar and start playing! I have an epiphone les paul special 2 with dimarzio steve vai evolution pickups to get that "blues/swing" feel.
Hey, I love your songs, but I would like to know if you can help me. I am learning guitar, my first and only electric guitar is a Fender Starcaster my amp is a Frontman 15 R. I try playing some songs im learning, and the sound nothing like the real songs it is doesnt have a twang, are you using another device to make that, or is my guitar just not suppose to sound that good. Could you recommend what I should get for a new amp and/or guitar? Feel free to PM me. Thanks!
Hey,I have the exact setup as you currently, and no it's not going to sound amazing. The amp is what generates most of the sound, so if I were you I would buy a new amp before a new guitar, but that's just me. Hope this helps;) Peace out.
Hey Brian..open the gibson giveaway contest to Canadian guitar players!! I think you already checked out my vid of Gemini, but anyways keep rockin..i love your stuff!!
I wish I could open it up to everyone... but the rules where made by Gibson and there are international legal concerns that are way over my legal mind ;-)
Thanks man - hope to see you on tour in the great white north!
hey thnkz man... yeah i hope they could do the international thing... ohh well... btw i learnt the song by ear aswell so yeah... thnkz for the compliment!
its sounds like a variation of black math by the white stripes which can be found on the album elephant. listen to it you will find its extremely similar
i knew it!! he rocks ever since i heard gemini on guitar hero i said "wow this guy rock" but now that i know well how cool he can jam hes cool well cooler than i tought =)
i have been looking at tabs to figure out how to play song, and when i cant find a tab for a song i like, i am skrewed!! btw does any one know guitar world this tab is going to be in?????
Isn't that a Gibson Les Paul? If it isn't it sure does look like one.
Im trying to get one on eBay, but they are so expensive, even used old ones cost at least $300-$500. Brian do you think you could give me one? Im sure you have the money :p
Good point. I bought my Les Paul for about 800$ some seven years ago, and that's a real bargain anywhere I believe, unless you're looking for a guitar with no pickups or a broken neck.
The only problem with tabs, like he said, is that later on down the road you can't addapt to original material as quickly. So if you're looking to be a rythem guitarist, go for tabs. But if you want to make some truly original music and have an understanding about adaptation and improvisation, I'd take playing by ear any day. Its all choice.
this guy is such a douche though ...his song is great but who gives a fuck how to learn guitar. If he wants to take the time to develop perfect pitch fine...but don't say ...oh... you guys who dont practice like I did are going to be bad later on...wtf...if this guy could even get a show I wouldn't see it
go fuck yourself you idiot. You probably have the world's smallest dick. He's giving advice on guitar, and just because you suck at life doesn't mean you can make fun of him. crap. spice girls rule
yea if hes a really great guitarist and he says somethin like that hes right listening to stuff by ear will help you later im only 17 but ive been playin guitar since i was 8 i know this stuff and i rarely use guitar tabs
guys, really HEARING music is so important. spend time everyday trying to figure out the music instead of whining for tab all the tab. JUST LIKE BRIAN SAID. it helps you later when you are writing music.
Seriously, it's not that hard to pick up the main riff if you just listen to it and work on it. The fills get pretty technical; but you should be able to put some stuff in there that sounds cool as long as you know your scales and progressions.
Like Brian said, try transcribing it yourself. If you really get stuck then check out a tab.
Gemini was easily one of the best songs on GH.

Isn't that a Gibson Les Paul? If it isn't it sure does look like one.
Im trying to get one on eBay, but they are so expensive, even used old ones cost at least $300-$500. Brian do you think you could give me one? Im sure you have the money :p

*cough*...if your not willing to spend more than 500 dollars stop looking for a good guitar.

*cough*....Go fuck yourself
Caleb1916 4 years ago

He has a point. Training your ear is a good thing.

this guy is such a douche though ...his song is great but who gives a fuck how to learn guitar. If he wants to take the time to develop perfect pitch fine...but don't say ...oh... you guys who dont practice like I did are going to be bad later on...wtf...if this guy could even get a show I wouldn't see it
idontcare637 4 years ago
Wow ... looks like we know who the real douche is now...
Good luck with all that hate...

go fuck yourself you idiot. You probably have the world's smallest dick. He's giving advice on guitar, and just because you suck at life doesn't mean you can make fun of him. crap. spice girls rule
need4speed4245 4 years ago 2

yea i learned it in 5 min. i thought it was harder than it was :D
arpegiofromhl 4 years ago
i agree with brian. its better to tab songs out yourself.
blakexzappa 4 years ago 5
guys, really HEARING music is so important. spend time everyday trying to figure out the music instead of whining for tab all the tab. JUST LIKE BRIAN SAID. it helps you later when you are writing music.
Hardcoreflatland 4 years ago 6
Seriously, it's not that hard to pick up the main riff if you just listen to it and work on it. The fills get pretty technical; but you should be able to put some stuff in there that sounds cool as long as you know your scales and progressions.
Like Brian said, try transcribing it yourself. If you really get stuck then check out a tab.
