wow such serious technical talking about guitar players when all comes down to its who can combine decsent skills with great riffs and just groove out so you can just be absorbed by the sounds, there are many great guitarist in the professional world (malmstene-via-)and so on but did thy really grab the soul when they played?

Frusciante is more overrated than Hendrix, Vai, Satriani etc. If you are after emotional playing that blows Frusciante out of the water then listen to David Gilmour.

I see how this could be compared to Maggot Brain but this is less flashy and more trippy. On MB Hazel loves his wah and legato, John does both of those on this track just not as much still a great track.

ok i normally don't post texts on this site but some of these comments are getting to be rediculous. john frusciante is the BEST all around guitar player of our generation. If you've ever watched a slew of live performances you would never say navarro is a more technical guitar player. what makes john so versitile and unforgetible is his uncanny ability to forget about trying to make people say he is the greatest guitar player in the world today. instead he makes you think.u should be crying

even though frusciante clearly is; you don't need to be immensely technical to be a "god". he is extremely creative and when you listen to his previous work you can hear the emotion he is describing. my biggest idol

ur so right he dosent focus on being a virtuoso but emphasizes feel, emotion and experimentation in the same way as god ( hendrix ) did.

It's okay, but I certainly think he's an overrated guitarist. I love his music, and the Chili Peppers, hence why i'm here so early, because I just went to HMV and apparently british release date is 36th, but seriously, compare this to Maggot Brain, you will realise that John Frusciante is no 'god', (despite the will to death being a great album), he is just very good to listen to. Technically, Navarro was far better, but I prefer Frusciante.

I bet I could answer this question insightfully, I think John Frusciante is a very good guitarist, but 18th in Rolling Stones all time list suggests he is overrated. Mike Mccready didn't make the list; he is better in my opinion. Now techinically, metall players like Malmsteen, Rhodes, Mustaine, Friedman and I honestly think if you just want innovation Jonny Greenwood is better. So stop looking for arguments. I've never heard such a ridiculous, childish riposte as one that begins 'i bet you '.

Like I said, no insight. Insight has analysis, comparing, contrasting, etc... You only provided blanket opinions with some name-dropping. But thinking in terms of who is better than who is a very amateur approach. You're assuming that you have complete knowledge of what a certain player can and can't do when it's completely impossible to assess that. Mike McCready rarley writes music, just guitar parts over Eddie and Stone's songs. Metal shredders are just one very limited aspect of guitar playing, and Johnny Greenwood doesn't play guitar on half of Radiohead's songs. John is the best guitar player in the world.
