  • @ROL332 in my opinion , our distance concerning what is considered semi pro and pro is small today. d7000 is all many of us need. check out... freedslr . c0m change 0 with o and try to get an opportunity win completely new Nikon D7000

  • How come none of these D90 video tests are in HD? It looks crappy.

  • @fdh1004

I put all D90 HD videos in another site. I'll send you the info directly to you

  • @fdh1004 Check my test

  • is this auto focus???? also exposure is not locked....

  • @digitally2007

No it is not! ....there is no autofocus in video mode in Nikon D90.

and yes the exposure was not locked while taking this video.

  • Thank you for sahring this video! Am wondering if I shpul ''uppgrade'' my D60 to the D90!

  • @denid1

Thank you, Well not a bad Idea but be sure you buy a VR lens with it and then you need some other Manual lenses too. Soon Nikon will shows a new Nikon so it's not bad if you wait to see what will happened later. You should also take a look at Panasonic GH1 which is very powerful camera for filming, of course D90 is faster and more useful for Photography

  • @dcc460ut

Thanks a lot, have to say that video recording is not the most importand for my choice, but nice to know it'squality. Thanks for telling me that Nikon is coming with a new model of a camera, well, I should sell my as fast as posible now, cuz it will be cheaper when the new one comes out, I guess.

  • @denid1

OK then buy D90 or D300s when you find a good deal

  • Which programs have you used to put together movies, I use a Finepix S2000HD and I can not edit movies in Windows Movie Maker, but those movies are saved in MP4 format .. Shit the same, what program and what format the movies are saved as you're shooting with the D90 ?

    Grateful for answer :)

  • @OnlyMeRightBeside

I have a G5 PowerPC Mac and I use Final Cut Pro for editing

The D90 format is AVI but I change it to QuickTime and then after editing I export it as DIVX or FLV

  • @OnlyMeRightBeside adobe premier pro is a good one to use :D

  • Hey nicw video!

Watch my two short films on my profile, they are also made with the D90!

  • exposure lock??

  • @Kurtinlv

No it did not set to lock!, lack of knowledge!! this test made only 30 minutes after I open the box and rush out to see how it's video works. I could not find it in the menu

but if you check my other videos I made with D90 I always used the Expo. lock

  • @dariogdariog

many people like to take vivid picture or video so they change the factory setting or push the saturation, for this video, the idea was to use the factory setting out of the box and test it. I checked the macro and it seems they set the camera to vivid or they push the saturation. you can do plenty of enhancement to the camera's setting to match your taste.

  • This video is washy. Look at "Nikon D90 Video - Macro"

  • @dariogdariog

Nothing wrong with the colors!, check out your monitor or try to calibrate it!!

  • @dcc460ut no it is a little washy.

  • @notsocomicaltv

    I'll do that Thank you.

  • Whera are colors??????????????????????????????

  • @dariogdariog

what do you mean by that

  • Wait you cannot auto focus while recording? All manual?

  • @sean9820

Right! you can not using auto focus system while you are recording

  • @dcc460ut thank you for the response!

Do you like the video quality?

  • @sean9820

Yes! If you use tripod or VR lenses .

  • so it only records in 24fps?? or does it do 30fps??

  • In HD format records at 24fps.

  • I was wondering, can this camera take a lot of photos in various seconds? kinda like a slo-mo effect if you play them? thanks

  • IS there any problem with using a manual focus when you are recording ?

  • No not at all the time but under full sun because of the screen condition. you need to practice to get use to it.

  • im planning on getting this camera.

.how long cAn u actually record before it burns the sensor..as ive been hearing

and what with the 5 min limit..if there is any?????

  • That's true with the 5 min limitation but remember it is not a camcorder, you have this problem with all DSLR cameras with video, some can records more some less

Nikon made it for News reporter and those Indy film maker with low budget!

  • reason is as follows: t no single HD video clip can run more 5 minutes. The reason for this is not technical, but political. In Europe any device that can record more than 5 minutes of HD video is classified as a video recorder and attracts higher import duties than do still cameras. Why this limitation then needs to be applied to those of us outside the Euro zone is a bit of a mystery. (According to luminous landscape)

  • Thanks ! You may know that Panasonic GH1 has no limitation but it sells as DSLR camera here and there

    I'll do more digging.

  • wow, quick reply,

but yeah, they say higher import costs, but that doesn't mean that Panasonic doesnt want to pay it :P

  • just thought of one thing contradicting my own comment,

non-hd vids shoot more that 5 minutes :O

  • But after 5min you can push start and record again

  • nice vid. i have a d90 also. are you using manual or auto focus?

  • Thanks

Manual!, there is no auto focus when are filming!

  • :) awesome, i got mine 3 days ago but the lens began to malfunction yesterday! so i didnt get to fool around with the video yet. (new one coming in mail under warranty thankfully)

    nice video tho.

  • I'm probably getting this camera this summer, the video quality seems fantastic, I really cant wait to get this, it seems like an amazing camera. :D

  • Can it record sound, if so how is the quality?

    Thanks for the great vid!

  • Thank you,

Yes it records in Mono only good for home video!

  • wow nice work!

im intending to get the D90

how did you get such a clear and nice depth-of-field?

is it the lens or the editing?

and is this the original color or after color correction?

    thanks.

  • I used the kit lens 18-105mm VR , a Tokina 400mm f5.6, a sigma 125mm f2.8 macro and a Nikon 55mm f2.8 macro. what you see here is edited by FCP and I did not enhance the pictures in any way.

  • The HD recording , is it full or basic?

  • It is 1280x720 and 24fps! that's the highest HD Res. you could get from D90.

  • Wow I like it!

  • Wow, that is a beautiful presentation. Thanks for sharing! :-)

  • Thank you!

  • You're welcome; however, I have one question: Does the D90 save the videos as an .AVI, and do you need any 'special' codec for computer playback?

  • Yes! if you work with Mac and have Final Cut Pro then switch to HD 720 ( PAL or NTSC ) and drop the AVI on the time line and begin editing. but the quality of video compare to Panasonic GH1 is lower unless you use some special filter. for better result use a good tripod.

  • For playback only you could use Quick Time program which is free for both PC & Mac

  • thanks for the great video, am going to buy the D90 in a few days.

  • wait for the next generation or check the Panasonic GH1

  • the color is bland, the rendering picture is soft.. ur rendering setting is poor

  • it's OK in my monitor ( Apple cinema calibrated ) check your monitor, watch it in HQ. and consider that any beaches around S. California during the after noon is hazy!.Mainly I don't change any color or contrast setting of the video in FCP

  • great video, I am going to buy the D90 in a couple of days, and this made me feel pretty good about the potential it has for video recording.

  • So I'm fiddling with my Nikon D90 and I'm wondering how do you zoom in and focus while in video mode?

    Please help me!

  • Ok! when you are in photo mode zoom in to your subject focus it zoom back go to live mode begin recording and zoom to your subject whenever you want..... that's it

  • Thankyou very much! You were so helpful. =D

  • you set the lens to manual and turn it to zoom in and out as normal and focus manually by turning the end of the lens

  • Set your camera to manual focus and your lens to manual focus. After you zoom in or out you will then have to adjust the focus.

  • not quit hd but it did not look bad in fullscreen

  • Soon Nikon D300s with better video quality and 1080p will hit the market.

  • bad video...

  • Happy to hear that!

  • nice video, thanks for posting.. Gosh, which do you think is better? the d90 or the d5000? im eyeing both, and i really don't know which to get.. They seem pretty similar anyway. Btw, what is silent shooting?? Is it softer noise made from shutter sounds and etc?? thanks in advance! (:

  • Thank you, In Quite mode you have a slower mechanism in mirror action. As long as you want to use the camera for Photography, both are the same and you will get very nice pictures. D5000 has no Autofocus motor in the body and put it in the lenses! but you get swivel monitor plus Quite Mode. for movie part they are the same so decide yourself

  • I looked at a comparison on google, the image quality is a tad bit lower on the d5000. The d90 is like an extra $400 plus tax. I got the D90 not too long ago and am VERY happy with it.

  • the background music is a part of "the four seasons" (vivaldi) ? sounds also like Felix Mendellsohn.

    nice video also.

and i think im sure it's a part of the four seasons hehe

  • Yes, This is the summer part of "the four seasons"

  • those exposure shifts are pretty rough, can you turn auto exposure off?

  • Right, but it was my mistake which i mentioned before ! I got the camera for a test drive and I could not find the AE lock's switch so it remain in Auto mode and you see what happened to the picture!. but you can lock it through the menu and when you need to lock it just push the switch and it will stays locked.

  • ooooooh, ok. Thanks for the reply, I thought it was a horrible oversight on Nikon's part!

  • What you think about the D5000?, it seems to solve your problems with the fixed screen of the D90 while shooting HD Video. I'm planning to buy that one, do you recommend buying it with the kit lenses?, I was thinking of just getting the 50mm f/1.8 DX instead, have any suggestions? =)

  • Anyway the D5000 is smaller, lost the top screen, has the same Cmos sensor, it's lighter, cheaper, has a better monitor for low and high level photography and has the same video as D90. and let me correct myself that the Full frame and AI,s lenses could be use here with some restriction.

  • I've been wanting the D90 for quite some time, I've also looked at the D5000. Can you tell me what you mean by "lost the top screen" and "has a better monitor for low and high level photography" ? thanks you, I want to make sure I get the better of the two.

  • Top LCD screen which you could find it in D90-300-700-3 and so on. before the digital era all those Pro SLR cameras had one for info about your camera setting. D90 and other Nikon DSLR has a fix monitor at the back of camera, D5000 has a Swivel monitor which is only good when you want to take picture in low or high level! it's good for photography but not good enough for filming ( videography ).

  • okay so you'd recommend the D90 over the D5000? I still think the D90 is better. I can't wait to get it, I'm looking at lenses now.

  • Money wise the D5000 is cheaper so it depends on your goal and your pocket. again for photo only I will recommend D300 or D700 for video and Photo you may choose D90 or D5000. just go to your nearby photo store and put them next to each other and see for yourself which one you like better. all of them takes pictures beautifully. but remember D90 is pioneer in a new era of videography despite so many things it has to be improved .

  • What you think of the Nikon D5000?, seems to solve your problems with the fixed screen, do you know if it has the same "5 min" limit?, has the same features?, I'm planning to but the D5000 and I thought that you, being used to use the D90, could suggest me if it was worth it, or just the D60, which doesn't have video but is cheaper as well. Also another question, do you recomend the kit lenses?, I was planning to buy the body just with the new 50mm f/1.8 DX lenses, suggestions? =)

  • Thanks for the question and sorry about delay!

I did not test the D5000 but I know it has many plus & Minus compare to D90 , the bad thing is you will stuck with the kit lens or those DX lenses so can not use the Ai,s lenses which I think they are the best for video part of the camera. if you are going to use the camera only for photography then buy it ( money wise ) even if I recommend you D90 or D300 will be a better choice .

the new screen is only good for low level photography not Video.

  • how long do you record video on it?.......and hows the image stabilizer?

  • Non Stop 5 min. D90 stops after 5 min. then you have to press the record again like a film camera that's why it is not useful for recording a whole Hockey game!

  • what video tool did you use to make these? thanks

  • Nikon D90 + Tokina 400mm ( 600mm for this camera ),

Nikon 55mm Macro, Sigma 105mm Macro and Monfrotto Tripod

  • Thank u so much for this vid .

I think the vid feature is pretty good, after all the camera is specialized in photography not for making films !

  • You are right, That's why I mentioned before that D90 needs many improvement to be a perfect video camera

  • the rest of my answer! By all those + & -- you get a camera with kit lens ( 18 to 105 ) which is not bad for around $ 1200. but if you like to pay more then you need a Nikon 50mm /1.4 or Nikon 35mm /1.8 and a Nikon 55mm macro /2.8 or a Sigma 125mm/2.8 or a Nikon or Sigma zoom 70- 210mm and a very good Tripod like Monfrotto, and extra 7' monitor and so on! so please you decide what you need and calculate yourself , for video part, buy AI.s lenses ( Manual ), a nice gear cost you around $6000

  • 2 things kinda bother me with using this camera as a camcorder, and i'm hoping you can answer them:

    1. when using longer lenses, does continous VR act as an image stabilizer, or will it always be necessary to use a tripod to achieve smooth video.

2.Nikon's website noted that when using D-Movie mode, the camera's auto-focus is disabled. If this is true, then does the LCD screen have enough resolution to allow for accurate manual focusing?

  • 1-That's help mostly for taking picture but not really good when using the video part. If you have VR.( 105mm and up ) lenses then deactivate VR and use a very good Tripod instead.

2- Yes, No Auto focus with video recording. D90's LCD is a HI.Res display but it is small and fixed on the back!, So extra 7" monitor will help a lot for better focusing and composition. There are two expensive kits for Nikon D90 and canon 5D II which makes these two cameras perfect for any kind of filming.

  • you got a pretty bad lightening (too much light) so the colours is getting boring

  • Calibrate your monitor please

  • it have nothing to do with my monitor. im a photo pro so i know alot about good and bad photos and videos, this isnt bad, the colours is just getting a bit boring

  • But in photography we don't use the term " Boring " for color, we say saturated or non saturated color! could you explain to me what you exactly mean by " color getting boring "? see the main idea of this clip is to show the "DOF" and lens change ability of D90 compare to the consumer camcorder. Here we did not lock the AE and that's why you see the camera aperture is changing in low or high light.

  • i mean that the coulors is not as clear as it could be couse of the intense light of the sun (my english is kinda crappy =()

i hope that i didnt made you angry

  • Not at all, I'm very pleased to get the point, Mainly I use a Mac G5 with Apple cinema display and a powerful PC with Sony 19" monitor, my reference for color and sharpness is the Apple monitor which is highly and correctly calibrated that's why I asked you check your monitor! by the way try the " HQ " when you watch the clips in YouTube.

  • hooooooly, I'm gonna get this soon!

  • i have seen better videos with the fz28... ¬¬

  • Sure but in what regards. this is a short test to show the ability of D90 mostly on DOF and using different lenses of Nikon from AI's to Auto focus.

You may watch my other videos with better planning

like: "Nikon D90 HD Short Film" or " Nikon D90 visits Las Vegas 2008 "

  • hi, whats the deal with the background light flickering as it gets darker and lighter? does this happen with most cam corders? i noticed it caus im analysing the shiit out of this video as im thinking of getting one of these cameras

  • Thanks a lot for the comment! and analyzing the shiit of my Video!! That shiit caused by not locking the AE on the camera Call it lack of knowledge ( I got the camera only for testing and shoot this video 2 hours after )so I did not have enough time to find the AE Lock in the Camera's Menu.

By the way This is not a camcorder!, Nikon d90 is the first SLR camera with the ability to shoot video.

  • I just got the D90 and I uploaded videos to youtube on Quality 1280/720 I exported them out of Imovie on my mac as CD-R should I export it as Full Quality? I'm trying to figure out how to upload the videos in HD!! on youtube! Please help!!

    Thanks!!

  • I'm confuse ! you siad you uploaded your film to youtube on quality 1280x720! Am I write? then you know how to upload it!.. anyway the highest quality you can get from D90 is 1280x720. but for burning your film on DVD , I'm afraid you can't do it by your Mac because you need a Blu-ray Disc which your mac does not have it yet.

  • Well I have the camera set on 1280x720 but what type of quality should I export the video out of Imovie? As of right now I export the video in the CD-R format. Should I do Expert quality? It's not uploading in HD on youtube. Trying to figure out how to do that.

  • OK if you have the old iMovie then for export do this

1-go to share and then click on share again

2-on share click on QT. and from compressmovie for

A- Full quality or B- if you have " DIVX" plugin then pick export setting

4- click on export setting, a QT. window comes from. from export window pick " Movie to DIVX"

5- click on option and fallow the DIVX setting

6- in Crop and resize uncheck the resize

  • Thanks for the help!! It worked I have the old imovie. Is your camera ever say ERR or just freeze up? Mine is kinda acting up I'm taking it in today.

  • Thank you,

No I did not get any Error message so far, Check the memory you bought for it

  • ok cheers for quick reply, i dont have much knowledge about taking photos and recording video...so your telling me its something that can be fixed? i think thats what your saying...thanks so much

  • Dude wads the maximum amount of time you could record the video in Hd?

  • Well, continuously 5 min. it will stop after 5 min. but then you can press the record again so if you have enough memory then you can record one hour or two! but with limitation of 5 Min. per shots. In reality when you shoot a film and doing shot by shot it's not a big deal!, the big deal is the quality of shots which is right now by this compression is not good.

  • Is it possible to shoot the video in 1080p ?

  • No!

  • NO HD. SO, U SUCK.

  • Why...!?

  • Thanks for sharing this video.

Question about aperture/shutter shifts that caused the video to go from lighter to darker and darker to lighter in steps. Was the camera making all the aperture/shutter adjustments or were you making the adjustments manually?

    Blessings,

    Frederick

  • No, it was a mistake not to lock the AE. I should lock it. When you lock the AE. in video mode, camera try to shift up the gain by pushing the ISO up and down just because the camera speed in video mode is 1/48 sec. to give you the correct 24fps. For adjusting the aperture during filming you need a manual lenses named AI-S (Nikon lenses). with new lenses you can not change the aperture and camera set it for you which you may not like it.

  • Thank you so much for your reply you defiantly answered the question.

They have defiantly added a nice feature and I am pleased about that. I'm sure in the future the video side of these new SLR cameras with directly compete with video Pro/Prosumer video cameras. I await eagerly :D

    Blessings,

    Frederick

  • You're welcome!

  • hi which lens did you use for that piece

  • Four lenses:

    Tokina 400mm f 5.6

    Nikon 18-105mm f 3.5- 5.6

    Sigma 105mm f 2.8 Macro

    Nikon 55mm f2.8 Macro

  • You tube sucks balls when it comes to HD

    VImeo FTW!

  • wow, those out-of-focus flowers look great.

  • Sorry about that!! the meaning was to show the camera's DOF!

  • must have this camera.

  • well this camera is a "Advanced Amature" camera. Its pretty amazing considering its the first Nikon with video.

  • I'm not really impressed.

  • Sure! this video was the first attempt and as you see with a lot of problem but it shows you the power of D90 if they try to solve some of the problems we found in its video part it will be a nice camera.

check my other video which I used D90 and you could find more from " dcc460ut "

  • people say that camera has to be a camera, and a video recorder should be a video recorder, when both are combined, its not good in taking pictures, and not that good in video... true?

  • Good Question! No It is Not True! first of all Nikon D90 is one of the best Photography camera around and if you check the Time Magazine it became # 4 of 10 best Gadget of the year! it's great to have it if you know how to use an SLR Camera.Video part of that needs a lot of attention to be perfect but it is a bonus and they did not charge you extra for that! Two years ago I bought my Nikon D70 for $999 and two month ago I paid the same price for D90 plus all those extra feature and pixels.

  • yeah, nobody is against extra "stuff" in this SLR, but the "stuff" isn't quite good, i saw a few videos where you can clearly see that it wobbles way too much..

  • All my life I had and have Nikon cameras and this one with $1000 tag is one of the best when I want to refer you to a good camera ( Not a Video Camera!) soon the next generation will be here and I upgrade this to a better one! Meanwhile that I'm waiting for the new one I love to work with D90 HD! I have two other HD camcorder but since I got D90 I did not touch them!

  • what's up with this sudden changes in brightness?

  • I forgot to lock the AE before shooting actually

at that time did not know if I could lock it!!

  • yeah the video on the D90 is worthless in my opinion but someone creative could still do something cool with it. Not being able to view through the eyepiece as you shoot is ridiculous and I'd like to hurt someone.

  • just check this company what they made for d90

    zacuto

D90 is a baby and we should wait to see it be better

  • I really like this one too!!

    good job!

  • Thank you

  • naja so richtig funktioniert es noch nicht. aber schon ne überlegung wert

  • Yes it needs a lot attention and improvement

  • This is the first attempt, no other DSLR have it our there. Its not a camcorder and it does the job, in HD baby.....

  • Good Comment but I think Nikon should improve the camera body and Video compression

  • I got your message but then it just vanished!?

so I copy it from my mail and put it here.

I knew about Arriflex and as a matter of fact many years ago I filmed several documentary with Arri! the new one must cost a fortune but if somebody has a deep pocket then could pay for it! nobody will compare a Porsche with a Fiat 500

  • I like anyone who isn't afraid to try out something new. But let me be a bit critic on the other hand; Your focus in the video isn't quite sharp in a lot of shots, I understand it's hard to do. Soon I will get my own D90, and sell my Pentax K10d.

After that I'll put my vids on and you can critique on my video aswell ;) No hard feelings.

    Good post!

  • You are right, the problem is the D90 monitor, Nikon should redesign the camera and the monitor. Right now it is very hard to use this monitor for focusing. the monitor should be free to rotate and stay in any angle we want.

  • thanks for this. i've been curious as to how video looks on the camera. how many gigs per minute of footage did it take?

  • The quality is not bad for itself but the compression is really takes out all juices!

anyway As I checked my footages and I can say

10 sec will be around 20 to 25 Mb.

  • Very classical. I loved this...

    Good eye, mate! :D

Hopefully I'll be able to make as classy a video as this when I get my D90 ^^

Keep up the good work! 5/5..

    So soothing.

  • Thanks a lot

  • Here is another one I edited recently

    " Nikon D90 HD Short Film "

  • Yes, he's right. There is a great deal of exposure fluctuations. Why is this? Is it set to an auto-exposure mode? Or bad compression?

  • I think I mentioned it before it was my mistake not to lock the AE! if you watch a very short movie which I made by D90 (From Sunset to Moonlight )there is no such a problem that's because I Locked the AE and I tried not to pan too often.

  • the colours are not sharp and i think the light is like, blinking!

  • You see, I got the clips in S. California and I remember the camera was set on Landscape, frankly by my eyes I don't see any problem with that! if you mean the color are not saturated ! well maybe but the light jumping up & down because the AE was not lock

  • I can't wait till DSLR quality like that of the Mark II translates down to the consumers. Its pretty wild to note that all those people who bought redrocks, and letus35 are going to be very disappointed. And I do realize were talking about a camera designed for taking pictures, but its still a feature that would be very nice. I'm currently looking for a DSLR and since I've grown up using a rebel 35mm I'm leaning towards the XSi. (expecally since I have two lens' that will work with it.

  • I'm Sure it will be a Very good choice!

  • canon's mark II definitely pwns the nikon

  • You are right but this two cameras are not in a same class:

    Canon 5D II + side:

    1-Full frame 21mp,

    2-Better quality (1080)

    3-20min recording time.

    Now the - part:

    1-Cost you $2750 (Body),

    2-it is not 24fps

3-it is not accepting the old Canon lenses.

  • Now Nikon + side:

    1-Records 24fps,pure film.

2-Accept all kind of lenses made by Nikon. 3-cost you $999!(Body).

    And Nikon - side:

    1-5min recording

    2-It is not full HD.

    3-Av instead of QT.

I hope a new firmware could solve the problem

  • what's the name of the song?

  • Summer by Vivaldi

  • And could you please tell me what is the name of the violinist?

  • I don't know but this is the "summer" from "four season" Album

  • sigh...this definitely makes a dof adapter look like crap

  • "makes a dof adapter look like crap"???? Nub. Maybe a homemade DOF constructed from an empty toilet paper tube. Perhaps you should see a Brevis with a 1080p camera attached to it, then compare it to the footage from a DSLR. There is no comparision, actually. This is a great, fun, toy. But aside from reasons of novelty and experimentation, you are not going to be seeing many big-budget national commercials shot with this camera. Yet, you will from crews using DOF converters.

  • D90 has many childhood problems which I think they will fix them soon. But the main point is that Nikon took a small step ahead which will have a big impact in future of film industry

  • lol check out the arriflex digital camera for motion pictures. even the sanyo xacti HD1010 outperforms D90. And yes, I own a D90.

  • It's La Joya?

    Thanks and congratulations

  • Thank you,

    No it is Laguna Niguel

  • Mmm tasty Vivaldi.

  • ooh yeah...........

  • lovin the video...

the starting sounds like a mafia movie LOL

  • Thanks a lot

  • why does some part of this video has a sudden darkens. do you know why it does that?

  • Sorry about the delay to your question.

That goes to AE function which I should lock it and I did not!( lack of information ) later on through the menu I find out how to keep it lock and now at any aperture setting it stays steady! so it was my my problem not the camera.

  • thanks! how long does the D-movie take? would it be able to record a continuous movie without a cut until it takes an 8 or 16gb storage out?
