another great gospel song played on one of the greastest radio stations in chicago history...and of course that would be THE VOICE OF THE NEGRO...hey WVON...1450...I truly miss the guys in the white hats...some, no, a lot of you old schoolers know what i am talking about!!!
I love Sam's voice because he was truely blessed by GOD....but i can never forget brother Donny Hathaway. They are the 2 most soulful, stirring male voices of all times.
I have a video of me singing Wonderful! It isn't long cause I was acting silly through half of it. lolol I grew up on old Gospel like this. Sam Cooke is the man. Please watch and give me feedback! God bless.
Love this song and all the singers. Still, Sam Cooke's trademark "run" is spectacular on this one. You can feel his feeling if you just sit back and take it in!
The closest I've ever been to God is the first time I ever heard this, just a young kid finding a weird record of Sam Cooke in a discount bin, trying to find another Twistin' the Night away. My eyes, ears and heart opened up. How can you not feel his Almighty beauty when you hear this. Miracles come in all sorts of packages. Mine cost 8.99
Beautiful comment. I'm also from the Delta, and I'm quite familiar with Memphis' WDIA. One of the best radio stations to ever receive a signal, playing stirring music like this particular song.:)
highpraisinsaint, i just remeber this song...and also...a little diddy called "I'LL MAKE IT ALRIGHT", which they will not let me listen to on you tube...and it was another gospel song by another dj that use to play everytime he went off the air, can you recall the name of the song...also which dj...holla back...help me bring back the old wvon sound
@oshungoddess 1...WVON was the station. We lived down the street from Lucky Cordell. This was the best radio station back in the day. Do you remember at the end of the day WVON played Open Our Eyes by the Gospel Cleffs? You knew it was time to go to bed...Many, many great memories!
i am a old timer...i was born in the 1960's this bring back so many memories of "WVON", 1450 on my radio dial..herb kent, e. rodney jones...bill "butter ball"crane...all the guys that wore the so called "white hats", 1960 in chicago...you can not git any better than this...if there are any more folks from that era and that time and place...holla back!!! and remeber that....
@oshungoddess1 An "oldtimer" born in the 60's - as we old folks say; you young whippersnapper. This is stil enjoyable gospel music. I remember sitting around the radio listening to WDIA radio from Memphis. TN after a hard days work in the fields and my mother, who is long gone, with tears in her eyes as we listened. I didn't understand then, but how well I understand now! Thank God for those experiences.
@lneely1069 Beautiful comment. I'm also from the Delta, and I'm quite familiar with Memphis' WDIA. One of the best radio stations to ever receive a signal, playing stirring music like this particular song.:)

FIRST HEARD THIS ON THE AM STATION SUNDAY MORNING BACK IN THE EARLY 70S.....MAN, IT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES FOR ME....A YOUNG MOTHER NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT LIFE.....THANK GOD I KNOW NOW....WHEN I GO THE LAST MILE OF THE WAY.....THANKS FOR THE POST...
The most beautiful song from the greatest peformer who ever lived. I was born in 1969 and was not even thought about when Mr. Cooke was doing his thing. My mother played Mr. Cooke for me when i was 12 and i will never forget the feeling i had inside when i heard his voice. Music had never made me feel that way before and i knew right away that this man was something special so i set out and bought anything i could get my hand on lock myself in my room and be amazed by this wonderful voice!!!!!
I heard this song for the first time last year at my family reuinion on my wife's side. We were in Miss and we were all gathered around the piano and we sang the old songs of zion like this classic. I really enjoyed that time.
i am looking for a version that was always played at the end of the "Herb Kent", radio show, back in the 60's thats in the chicagoland area...please hit me back...if you can give me the name of the group...will really appreciate it...thanks...also looking for the name of the gospel song that was played at the end of the richard pegue show
sam cooke is by far my favorite singer of all times. nearer my god 2 thee he was just that, blessed with a spirit that can deliver a joyful sound 2 lift u up with song & praise.
I remeber hearing this song when I was growing up.But I had never heard this version or would have ever dreamed Sam Cook would be singing the lead.Thank you so much for posting this classic for all of us to share with you.
I'm a whitey or a cracker, whatever black folks call us, but this song, done by this man, brings me to shuddering tears every time I hear it! What a wonderful God given talent! This is my very favorite song done by Sam Cooke! Unmatchable!
When I have gone the last mile of the way. This is the song that I want someone to sing for me. Or, barring that at least play the Soul Stirrers singing it for me. I was raised on Southern and Black Gospel. Love them both equally. My cousin dosen't care for Southern Gospel, been trying to get him to listen to the Hinsons for a while. To me the hinsons are southern gospels soul stirrers.
@FathersAdvocate -- If someone wants to send an addy I'd be happy to upload it to you if you know how to upload on YouTube! It's just too great of a song/artist not to have the very best up here!
Dont worry about what others call you, only desire what Jesus says to you, Well done thy good and faithful servant. Whatever you say or DO should be to they end... ttttto Love and Please Jesus, That is what makes Life worth something.Smile and forgive and Live peaceably my brother. The last mile...
he fell victim to the same temptation that we all are susceptible to, he may have had more temptation being famous, i don't know but GOD will be the judge of ole sam cooke not me my friends.
I've known this LP/song for all my life. When my father passed away at age 57, we played this song for him. I am lucky I inherited all his Sam Cooke albums, I guess I have about 30 of them, some original bought in the 60's some off course later released. Sam is wonderful, brings tears to my eyes, everytime I hear him sing, tears of joy or tears of sorrow. Thanks Sam.
One of the greatest voices and saddest stories ever. I am not sure if his or Elvis' were sadder. Both raised christian gifted with incredible talent, destroyed by the world.
sooooooo true.....a TRULY anointed voice and gift from God brought to a tragic end...can you imagine the list of protege's that would've been birthed from this legend had he remained here and stayed in the gospel industry?? WOW!!!
@belovers4ever ..Sam Cooke birthed sooo many singers. His voice and style appear to be effortless...A man telling a story or talking to his maker. Noticed I said seems to be effortless, I can't do it...Thats the beauty of Sam Cooke...I sing his gospel...type in larry hilton cooke 4 and # 3...But there will never be another Sam Cooke....L. Cooke
@PeterThrun U knw what u r so right..it brings chills over my body every time i hear his songs b/c he was too TALENTED....OMGGGGGG! I love Sam Cooke...One Of The Greatest who ever done it...PERIOD!!!
