  • Poor Niki !! Getting bullied by Enzo Ferrari to be back in the car by Monza was a pretty inhumane thing to do in order to 'make him' retain his World Championship crown...Ferrari I don't think gave a flying shit about his drivers as all he was interested in was being 'victorious'..a bit like Chapman who was also a ruthless bastard who's cars were weak structure wise & cost the lives of Clark, Rindt, Peterson, to name but a few lost legends..Thank God Niki wasn't one of them..Brave, brave man!!

  • niki lauda the greatest driver having very very very luck. and then 6 months later in monza starts lauda !. Amazing!!

  • the greatest Ferrari driver of them all...should have stayed at Maranello for the rest of his F1 career...Enzo Ferrari's biggest mistake was the way he treated Niki after he recovered from this accident

  • @hugodrax71 Personally I think Enzo did Lauda a MASSIVE favour as it allowed Lauda to flourish with another team & also to prove to Ferrari he was capable of winning the title with another team, Mclaren in '84...Well done Niki I say !!!! A true hero of our sport & a wonderful ambassador to boot !! A survivor in the the extreme !!

  • He is the burning hells survivor...amazing ;)

  • in these days F1 drivers had 3 balls!

  • This man deserves respect!

  • so he just nearly died because there was something from the other car where he sliped at, i really like these people who fight for there live and just get in a car again

  • Where's the commentator?

  • i am starting to think that if a driver is mentally well they recover much quickly

  • who is the driver at 3:28?

  • @4TaktRollerNeinDanke Should be Hans-Joachim Stuck.

  • LAUDA LEGEND

  • A wicked wreck, but, unlike many, he survived and was/is successful. Brilliant footage, thank you for posting it.

  • świnia

  • Who doesn't love the six wheeled tyrell; in my opinion the best f1 innovation ever

  • @thelostlibertine really?

i prefer the brabham fan car

  • awesome vid. without a doubt Nicky had balls of steel!

  • Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl, as well as Guy Edwards, got Lauda out. Merzario, as a former Ferrari driver, was the only one familiar enough with the type of seat-belt buckle to be able to undo it 'blind' in the smoke and flames.

  • Guy Edwards the british driver that pulled Lauda from his wrecked car with no thoughts for his own safety is a true hero !

  • Comment removed

  • Top Honours!!

  • The Monza footage at the end really makes it a 5/5 video!

Unfortunately, Enzo Ferrari already gave up Lauda after his crash...

  • jbg, sta da se radi..

  • Thanks. I never saw a lot of this footage before.

  • balls of steel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • voll schade das die nicht mehr auf der nordschleife fahren

  • Herr Lauda, bei dem Unfall hatten sie mehr als nur einen Schutzengel mit im Cockpit sitzen...

  • idiots, he is still alive xD

  • From the video, after the crash, Lauda didn't look like a guy who's fighting for his life...looks like he sustained minor injuries

  • True. But the fight for his life would start minutes later, when the toxic fumes that he inhaled started their atastrophic work in his lungs and consequently, blood.

  • HE'S STILL ALIVE!

  • @tiadaid

He is now TV-expert in Germany for F1

  • @xXRotusXx And own his own airline too

  • @tiadaid

    ahhh, yes, i forgot it

  • Amazing man, he's a testament to bravery. Cheers

  • Damalige Rennfahrer waren wohl noch echte Helden.

Alleine wie viele ohne zu zögern versucht haben Niki aus dem Wagen zu holen.

Glaub' kaum, dass man solchen Sportsgeist noch irgendwo findet.

  • zeptrader thanks for posting the video , it's very interesting and I've found some footages I had never seen before .

  • zeptrader he wrote " Honour & much credit to Arturo Merzario who stopped his car to save Lauda's life . He was the one who didn't exitate in getting into that fire & take Lauda's body off " .

  • i would like to see a modern f1 race on the entire nurburgring- even if it has been made safer. it has been made wider at some parts, more run-off areas have been installed and the track is less bumpy than before. but it's extremely difficult to hold a race on such a ridiculously long track. the only amazing tracks, i think that are left on the f1 calendar are spa, monaco and suzuka. maybe the hungaroing as well, but certainly those 3.

  • Notice at 5:17 the inside of the track, there is no guardrail...Nurburgring was the most famous, and one of the most deadliest tracks on the planet at that time....Such a beautiful course that handed the victory to pure driver skill and grit...amazing track.

  • In English!

  • honour to Arturo Merzario that stop his car just to save Lauda

  • @zeptrader

schade, dass man nicht hört was Harald Ertl in dem Interview sagt, hätte mich sehr interessiert...

  • onore ad Arturo Merzario che si fermò proprio per tirarlo fuori dalle fiamme!

  • lol 1976 August 01 is my mum's first birthday

  • @ bence250: wer will das wissen?

  • the best circuits are the most dangerous. just like was from imola gp.

  • and thats why there are no great circuits left in F1

  • Such a great circuit was the old Nurburgring but trying to marshall a 14 mile track is very difficult. So glad Nikki recovered to become a 3x World Champion just like Mika Hakkinen somehow surviving to win 2 championships after his crash in 1995.

  • never watched that before, absolute respect. btw fran812, he wasnt just called cheeky for retiring, enzo ferrari had the gall to call him a coward!!! the last thing niki can ever be accused of is cowardice.

  • John watson was first on the scene and told Niki to lie flat on his back ' In a BBC documentary he asked John several times 'my face! is it burned? is it burned?' John calmly said he was fine to keep him calm and prevent Niki from going into shock He also remembered seeing how 'one leg was badly burned, one ear was badly burned, his scalp was almost charcoal'

  • And Emerson Fittipaldi was between the other drivers to helps Niki.

  • the ONS (track safety crew) had the firecars stationed around the track with a Doctor and fireman on board. I wonder if they wouldve been able to save him if it wasnt for the other drivers. ONS was known for its rapid response like NHRA's safety safari.

  • I didn´t know that he lost his helmet after the crash, very good footage.

Lauda came back to the races after about 40 days and he deserve to win the championship that year too.

He give to Merzario a golden Rolex as a present to save his life. Great HERO drivers Merzario, Edwards, Earlt

  • There has been some questions about why niki looks at the palm of his had as he is being transported to a the hospital, perhaps an involuntary reaction after a horrific crash, any comments?

  • To a professional driver healthy hands are very important.

If his hands would have been seriously injured, he couldn't drive competitively anymore.

  • It is a normal human reaction to a serious trauma. Lauda looked at his hands as Ronnie Peterson did after his horrific crash at monza 1978. The look of their own moving hands means life. Sadly Ronnie did not make it. RIP

  • I never realised that he was conscious after the crash. unbelievable balls to drive a car again

  • I heard he NEVER went unconscious... and yes, HUGE balls.. and even there were some jerks who said he was cheeky when he retired in Fuji

  • poor old lauda, there was no way he could've avoided that crash. it was so sudden...

    great footage too...

  • At the risk of being a bit off-topic ....

The final 2o secs.of this vid - where it shows Lauda's return to racing just 6 weeks later at Monza - is rather eerie. Clearly shows the race being started while the back of the grid was still rolling into position.2 years later we lose Ronnie Petersen to an accident caused by that very same scenario at the same place, with likely the same inept person once again turning the lights green far too early. At any rate, thx for posting some great footage!

  • Thanks for posting this.

I had no idea that Lauda suffered a double impact, with that other car crashing into the front of his car, as he faced the wrong way, back up the track.

Top man and huge respect to him. (And I love the fact that he beat Alain Prost in '84.)

  • Had it not been for the drivers rushing to the aid of Lauda, he could have been dead. I can see why this course does not have many races on it, you need alot of safety crews around this whole track, something that was lacking here. Kudos to the person posting this, excellent footage. I never have seen the Ferrari that was burnt afterwards, really shows how bad it was

  • Niki would have to be the bravest driver of them all, such courage and heart to come back after that, he did a lot for Ferrari F1. That ferrari was one of the best looking f1 cars of all time.

  • yes was so lucky..he lost his helmet when he crashed into the wall....

  • Niki was soo damn lucky to come away from the crash in one piece - with the lack of safety back then.

Massive respect for the other drivers stopping to help.

This could've been very different if it weren't for them...

  • incredible footage...

  • Motoracing is dangerous, read the back of your ticket.

  • Very good collection.

Most of the footage have never been seen.

In that days, racing was dangerous, not like nowadays.

    Good work
