Loss of revenue can make large companies, even the auto industries; change their "business model". Sure the government can help with legislation to force them to put out new technology, but the true power is in our hands. Stop buying or leasing new gasoline powered cars for a year. To start, go Diesel, since in 2008 new catalytic converters have made Diesel cars legal in all 50 states.

However in the longer term, we should go Electric.

eletric cars + more advanced solar energey could be the key to a cars future. As for home heating/cooling/power. Why don't we stop looking at all these new energy resouces as indevisuals? Put windmills is windy places, solar plants in sunny places, hydro plants in wet places... really, theres no reason why we have to depend on oil.

That's true. Everything comes from oil but there are small things we can all do to reduce energy consumption. Buy less stuff and don't drive huge SUV's and put the thermostat at 78 degrees not 68. These small things can reduce consumption. Something as simple as not smoking cigarretes can help.

Or oil companies trying to look pretty in front of the environmental groups. We import about 60% of our oil according to the latest eia estimates. Also, if we had Integral Fast Nuclear Reactors we could completely get away from oil and make hydrogen from those plants. We will not be able to completely rely on solar and wind...they simply cannot meet demand...doesn't mean we shouldn't us them too.

oil is traded on the open market, and high oil prices means slower economic activity. I hardly believe that the Bush administration has any thing to do with low global spare capacity, and supply shortfalls due to double digit growth in the asias.... its simple economics, less supple (peak oil) more demand = high prices. We saw this coming in 1956, ie, M. King Hubbert.
