Hehe... as someone may have noticed by now, I hang out here a lot, arguing about this bullshit. But I agree with him here. Too much time is wasted playing games. Imagine all those hours put into actually making this earth a better place. If people used those hours on educating themselves, reading about the stuff they don't understand, we would be better off. I'm sure Mark and I don't agree on how to use that extra time, though. And I make video games for a living, but never play myself.

I keep getting the feeling that Mark Driscoll just hates to see men LIKING themselves. He wants to see them as self-sacrificing but I don't know about any of his own self-sacrificing behavior toward the men that he wants to have on his spiritual leash--you know, as an alleged leadership figure himself.

Chess and checkers involved "killing" and "conquering." What was the point? To have "fun" in the form of exercising strategic thinking. Videogames are nothing new under the sun.

I totally agree with you Mark! People are sooooo hooked on the worldly things, all they can do is defend what they love to do the most. Unitl you actually experience the love of christ and have an encounter with God you WILL NOT understand the "fun" in being a Christian. I myself am a gamer (I've spent many 8-12 hour days in front of my computer gaming), and I have to agree with Mark. Video games are fine in moderation, but in excess, they are detrimental to the Christian walk. People keep saying they are a great ministry (which is possible) BUT...when's the last time you shared the Gospel through gaming? Have you ever been playing CoD, WoW, or LoL and started witnessing? Video games are selfish. Let's get off the couch and start doing ministry for the Kingdom.

On this I agree; People should not let their lives revolve around games. This would hinder them from doing God's work. HOWEVER, that does not mean Christians shouldn't be permitted play video games. They provide great opportunity for sharing the gospel and are an emerging art. Yes we should go out and do things, and he is right in that video games do not count (yet). But to say that all video games are stupid is just that. Stupid.

He should not be mad at games and how "stupid" they are, but instead he should be mad that the general laziness of Americans. My two cents.

Too be honest, this guy seems more ignorant than educated. His analogy is very poor. We could say bowling is stupid because you are just throwing a ball down a path to knock pins down to get the highest score that wins you nothing. It is completely ignorant to ignore the benefits of fellowship and enjoyment with other people. The same goes for video games. If he even thought about this before he opened his mouth he could have seen a great avenue to share the gospel with millions of gamers.

Video games is a great avenue to do this in because there are so many people that play. In fact, some online games allow you to interact with people you will never meet, providing an amazing opportunity to represent Jesus. Unfortunately its the rash things like this video that Christians say that lead the world to view them as judgmental and hypocritical.

I don't understand why playing games and following Jesus have to be mutually exclusive. I would say it is stupid to write something off just because it is "fake". Just because something is make believe does not mean it does not shape us. Video games have more beneficial aspects then most people are willing to admit, they just need to be played in moderation.

I think the point he is trying to get across when he says.."young people want to get on a team, be part of a kingdom, conquer foe and win a great epic battle, and they are doing it with their thumbs".., is that we are on a team, we are part of a kingdom, Jesus conquered the foe so we with Jesus will win a great epic battle, if we are in the "game" which is our everyday lives. We can actually live it instead of playing it.

The point of this video isn't that video games are stupid in the same way that peeing in your pants is. He's saying that replacing real life, real accomplishment, and real change with achievements and victories in video games is stupid. None of it is real or of lasting value. Absolutely anything can become an addiction or become what you place your identity in. It's when video games cross that line that they are stupid. Video games are awesome, but there's more to life than playing them.

I think this is directed at people that are "addicted" to video games. I play a lot but I never put games before God. I do sometimes but God puts me back into place. I think Pastor Driscoll is placing this sermon solely on those people who do nothing but play World of Warcraft online like 6-10 hours a day. Yes I also believe that this is wrong and these people are wasted potential but in my opinion video games aren't stupid.
