I think he makes a clear and excellent point. He's basically saying stop joining together to waste time. If you're going to come together, do something good. Makes sense to me.
Of course I have an online dynasty game to play, but right after that....
Does he only have 16 year old boys in his church? I cant' believe every single young man in his church up to age thirty is playing video games all day! Why not tell people to witness and evangelize? We're not seeing the whole clip- hopefully the rest of the message is better than this!
I guess paintball is stupid too then. What the heck man? Pharisee much? I better not EVER hear of this guy EVER going out to the movies then. Since when is entertainment stupid? And who is he to sit and say that a fellow Christian is stupid for playing a dumb video game? The Bible says that if you call your brother a fool you are in danger of Hell fire! Watch it dude.
Did this guy just compare going to war with people playing video games for fun? What a fucking dipshit. I'm not sure if he realizes this but there is still war today, and people DO go to protect their families. What a stupid asshole.
Hehe... as someone may have noticed by now, I hang out here a lot, arguing about this bullshit. But I agree with him here. Too much time is wasted playing games. Imagine all those hours put into actually making this earth a better place. If people used those hours on educating themselves, reading about the stuff they don't understand, we would be better off. I'm sure Mark and I don't agree on how to use that extra time, though. And I make video games for a living, but never play myself.
I keep getting the feeling that Mark Driscoll just hates to see men LIKING themselves. He wants to see them as self-sacrificing but I don't know about any of his own self-sacrificing behavior toward the men that he wants to have on his spiritual leash--you know, as an alleged leadership figure himself.
Chess and checkers involved "killing" and "conquering." What was the point? To have "fun" in the form of exercising strategic thinking. Videogames are nothing new under the sun.
I totally agree with you Mark! People are sooooo hooked on the worldly things, all they can do is defend what they love to do the most. Unitl you actually experience the love of christ and have an encounter with God you WILL NOT understand the "fun" in being a Christian. I dare you all to see God for an entire week and give up somethings and I guarantee that if you seek im wholeheartedly and do some miraculous things in your life. He's done it for me.
One of the most annoying things I've heard from one of my favorite pastors. I wish I could've been there to yell "Go Seahawks!" after he finished this (Driscoll is a huge baseball fan, which I think is an even bigger waste of time).
The replacement for this? Did he mean the replacement for the battles he was talking about? Because there's always been war and fighting, it hasn't been replaced...this guy seems like a troll against gaming lol
Driscoll often appeals to masculinity from speaking of ancient battles like this. I find it funny coming from a man whose made a career of reading religious books and public speaking...
I myself am a gamer (I've spent many 8-12 hour days in front of my computer gaming), and I have to agree with Mark. Video games are fine in moderation, but in excess, they are detrimental to the Christian walk. People keep saying they are a great ministry (which is possible) BUT...when's the last time you shared the Gospel through gaming? Have you ever been playing CoD, WoW, or LoL and started witnessing? Video games are selfish. Let's get off the couch and start doing ministry for the Kingdom.
And this is why people think being a Christian means no intelligence, no fun, and a list of rules. Is chess also stupid? Sports, music, any other talent that might not be "real life"? Poor argument, and it saddens me that a dean spammed our campus email with this nonsense.
I feel like convictions are like news stories these days; everyone's eager to get theirs out first but they're rarely thought through and examined from all the angles.
On this I agree; People should not let their lives revolve around games. This would hinder them from doing God's work. HOWEVER, that does not mean Christians shouldn't be permitted play video games. They provide great opportunity for sharing the gospel and are an emerging art. Yes we should go out and do things, and he is right in that video games do not count (yet). But to say that all video games are stupid is just that. Stupid.
@DarthXentus From what I can tell, he is more frustrated at young people who sit around, and gaming is all they do. In this respect, I believe his feelings are misplaced. He should not be mad at games and how "stupid" they are, but instead he should be mad that the general laziness of Americans. My two cents.
Too be honest, this guy seems more ignorant than educated. His analogy is very poor. We could say bowling is stupid because you are just throwing a ball down a path to knock pins down to get the highest score that wins you nothing. It is completely ignorant to ignore the benefits of fellowship and enjoyment with other people. The same goes for video games. If he even thought about this before he opened his mouth he could have seen a great avenue to share the gospel with millions of gamers.
@Onlyonelifetogive And granted God did not create us to spend hours on games or watching tv, but He did create to reflect Him to others. Video games is a great avenue to do this in because there are so many people that play. In fact, some online games allow you to interact with people you will never meet, providing an amazing opportunity to represent Jesus. Unfortunately its the rash things like this video that Christians say that lead the world to view them as judgmental and hypocritical.
I don't understand why playing games and following Jesus have to be mutually exclusive. I would say it is stupid to write something off just because it is "fake". Just because something is make believe does not mean it does not shape us. Video games have more beneficial aspects then most people are willing to admit, they just need to be played in moderation.
This guy is the biggest fucking tool ever, LOL. Doesn't even realize that he is spending his time on something that isn't real and doesn't matter... rofl
@tfortommyb If that's the case, then you're spending your time commenting on a guy's video who is spending his time on something that doesn't matter. Who's the bigger tool?
#2. Possibly the reason why we prefer video games to real life conflict is that we want to enjoy the thrill of besting another man in armed combat without having to live with the knowledge that we just deprived a family of their father?
#3. Where is he getting this idea that people spend all their time playing video games and not doing anything useful? You can't just say things like that, you've got to support it.
@KingCrimson250 I don't agree that video games are just stupid. But let's be honest, there are tons of people who waste their lives away just sitting behind a computer screen or tv screen playing video games.
I think the point he is trying to get across when he says.."young people want to get on a team, be part of a kingdom, conquer foe and win a great epic battle, and they are doing it with their thumbs".., is that we are on a team, we are part of a kingdom, Jesus conquered the foe so we with Jesus will win a great epic battle, if we are in the "game" which is our everyday lives. We can actually live it instead of playing it.
The point of this video isn't that video games are stupid in the same way that peeing in your pants is. He's saying that replacing real life, real accomplishment, and real change with achievements and victories in video games is stupid. None of it is real or of lasting value. Absolutely anything can become an addiction or become what you place your identity in. It's when video games cross that line that they are stupid. Video games are awesome, but there's more to life than playing them.
KJVbereen: I was you. I used to feel the exact same way. But don't assume that you will never change, and that you know everything already that you will ever know.
I can tell you that video games are just as dangerous as drugs, porn, or any replacement for real-life. You were made to be a warrior in real-life. You were made to conquer real enemies, save real people from death, and win battles in your everyday life. Video games temporarily satisfy an eternal desire.
in this video: a stupid preacher who believes in: stupid things, hell, magic, gawd in the sky, senseless wars/battles/deaths, boldly preaching to us about how stupid video games are.
i thought i saw it all. A Christian antiabortionist calling the MOCK killing of Taliban stupid. Your right buddy Lets go to Afghanistan and round'em up in the name of Jesus. AMEN

doesn't even make any friken sense. using some stupid examples like video games.. yea and you think it's good for kids to read books about conquering the world, freeing the world from oppression, the Taliban for example, when the story is fiction and reading that doesn't even count. How the hell does that make it any different from video games?? People indulge in fantasies all the time. We all get addicted to things. You for speaking that crap and following your beliefs and us with our hobbies
@tokee1234567 i mean, maybe using... ya know, alcohol or some other kinds of petty things that people do to waste their time and health might have been more useful. but video games aren't just waste of time for most ppl. they're much better than going out and destroying one's own health and threatening other's lives.
He's not attacking video games. He's pointing out that video games (and things like them) are filling a deeper void in hearts...to be part of something meaningful and to achieve something significant.
I think this is directed at people that are "addicted" to video games. I play a lot but I never put games before God. I do sometimes but God puts me back into place. I think Pastor Driscoll is placing this sermon solely on those people who do nothing but play World of Warcraft online like 6-10 hours a day. Yes I also believe that this is wrong and these people are wasted potential but in my opinion video games aren't stupid.
People play games to have fun, not for it to -count-. And praising some heathen hate god doesn't exactly "leave a legacy" either. Preacherman should put down the bible and get a real job that actually forwards society.
