Fantastic film great stars - thank god they didnt go with the original lineup, (search wiki) fantastic song too - hits you in the heart. Previous poster must be evil to suggest burton die of lung cancer.
One of few films that is better than the book. Armatradings song only adds to the experience of Burton, Harris and the ruthless Bond Moore could've been (among others). Just awesome.
In my view, this is the best movie ever made!!. I first saw it 30 years ago as an 8 year old and it remains my all time favourite movie to this day. THE WILD GEESE - THE BEST ******* MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!
I loved this movie 15 years ago and still love it today... this song that came on at the closing credits stills sounds great as it was 15 years ago.... Go Joan

When I saw this film at Southend Odeon, when the credits rolled at the end, everyone started to file out, as you would expect. Then this song started, and everyone filed back in again and stood there, in silence, listening to the music. This is the only piece of music I've known have that effect at a cinema. I'm really pleased to find it on youtube.

@RichardElden SHUT UP, BRITISH MERCENARIES HELPED LOADS OF COUNTRIES. NOT RACIST AT ALL, HOW CAN IT BE WHEN ITS FOR THE FREEDOM OF AN AFRICAN NATION. KRUGER WAS RIGHT IN THE FILM THOUGH BY SAYING THAT '' NOW US WHITES ARE GONE, YOUS ARE TEARING EACH OTHER APART''.
@Ralphy63 The Wild Geese has always been 1 of my favorite movies. It's based in part/inspired by "The Congo Crisis" (1960–1966). I also like "The Dogs of War (1980). There really aren't enough great "Mercenary" movies out there. I really wish they'd make a movie about the 1981 failed coup attempt of Seychelles, perpetrated by S. African,"Mad Mike" Hoare. In the Wild Geese, Burton was patterned on Hoare, a mercenary who fought in the Congo Crisis & was also a technical adviser for the film.
This was my Dad's most beloved movie, he was a veteran and we use to watch this movie all the time from when I was little until the last days that he was alive. When he died I got the scene of the geese flying across the sun setting in the beginning of the movie tattooed on my chest directly across my heart in honor of my father. This movie holds alot of memories for me....very good memories...
my uncle was a mercenary in africa and hje told me it was based on a true story.he made a lot of cash in that particular job.although the british wont help any ex army of british decent if thier caught doing private work
The very first video cassette i ever bought was The wild geese almost 28yrs ago now, must have watched that film 100 times, love it....think i was 10yrs old at the time when i did:) Bloody Simbas! Hated 'em!!!!
Yes, it does pull on the emotions. I was just thinking about it as I watched the video. Pretty sad film, I've seen it many times in the past and it really does pull on your emotions....I think I jave it on DVD, free with the Mail on Sunday a while back.
watched it way back when it came out, thought it was so good to see real fire fights, not that john wayne stuff with only bad guys getting it, or rambo stuff.
honor it was and is to own this movie and watch it on memorial day
i was one years old when this movie came out. didnt see it till i was five, now its the best old school action film in my archive. alright love bring your buns ill be here with morphine and bandages for you:)
Great song. I loved this movie as a kid. Didn't learn till later that "The Flight of the WIld Geese" had a deeper meaning - the departure of Irish mercenaries from their homeland. Pretty appropriate considering the movie was about mercenaries.
@JuanMacready spoken like a child who leanred about racism today in school, maybe it was slightly racist it was still a better film that you could write/direct/produce,
and how is it racist exactly, stuff like this was happening at the time the film was set and if its shit why bother commenting
Selaxes - Huh they would buy you a drink in Washington or New Orleans, or Boston, or San Fransisco and they would still have a blade to your back and you would not even know about. Go Bravo two Zero you scud busters.
I watched this movie when I was about 7 years old. Haven't seen it in its entirety since. Back then I thought it was a simple war move. But now, knowing how the characters display and play out real-life demons: Booze, homosexuality, racism, etc. it is and was a brilliant piece of cinematography!
Iknow this film and book well....that aside its a f****ing disgrace anyway you look at it zimbabwe today...mugabe out racists anyone in any sort of power today......it century 21 but he still steels his too young to have fought fanatics with the return of colonism bullshit...in 02 when most white farmers kicked [men who haveskills and experince large scale farming ops.....clearer thinkers in zambia and poor mozambique offered them land...hes a nerdy racist jackass destroying all[even tourism!
More than a great film. Any one that's actually had the honor of serving will tell you. When it drops in the pot, it's all about the guys next to you, and reasons for taking up arms, politacally or for profit be hanged. And a cheery toast for those on the English side of the pond that have and still do wear the uniform. Served with a few of you guys in the sandbox. Damn fine soldiers!
from your comment on the wild geese question on jesse's head he has a para beret but why is it off green. couldn't figure that out. maybe you know. shouldn't it be red.
Lets face it people of the world: Nothing happens on this planet without the direct influence of combined international goverening powers and what they want us to see is all we'll ever see(as lay people)and do you think the normal everyday person will cange anything.. At my time of life I'd like to spend it on a dessert island: BUT.. I'd need my laptop, mobile phone, good cheap beer, a car, CNN, ipod... Oh sod it I'll just stay living in this goverment ratrap..!!!!
This is my favorite film of all time. i love it. Sad, funny, touching, it has everything. i was in the SAS for 4 years and this sort of thing happens.
I never will forget the ending, when Janders falls back on the airfield, shooten in the leg, yelling the name of his little son and Faulkner forced to kill him!! Unspeakable sad!!
For a few years I thought Harris' character was saying, " I'm ill, I'm ill! " :O) after watching it twenty more times, I figured it out!!! ... Then Burton becomes a new dad to Emile!
For years I always wondered if Joan Armatrading was given much grief by her fashionable leftist crowd for making this song for such a politically incorrect movie.
Damn right mate,i hear they used to regularly carve up Mugabe's lot, damn fine soldiers, but then they were once part of the SAS.
I also hear that Mugabe was hardly ever in Rhodesia during the guerrilla war,he was hiding in neighbouring countries that were already independent, gutless little clown.
Indeed! There is a much evidenece available to support the argument that the Selous Scouts were amongst the finest of the world's Elite forces, definitely on a par with any British unit you care to mention. That just about says it all really :) The selection for the Scouts was absolutely ruthless & gruelling-there wasn't a single mother's boy amongst those lads! lol
this song this movie just makes me cry no matter what when where i cry at this its very sad at the end. i got the movie in the paper the sunday paper and thought thats the saddest thing ever!.
teil 2: There were promises made Plans firmly laid Now madness prevails And lies fill the air. What more, Oh What more What more can we do. What chance to make it last What more What more can we do.
Sad are the eyes Yet no tears The flight of the wild geese Brings a new hope Rescued from all this Old friends And those newly found What chance to make it last When there's danger all around And reason just ups and disappears Time is running out So much to be done Tell me what more What more What more can we do.
I have been looking for this movie for a long time - just got it for Christmas!! Just a great down and dirty action movie with a very nice underlying message.
The priest in this movie was V Spielman's Dad in 'The Pianist' - great actor. Great movie. Sad. The interaction of J Limbarni(sic) and the Afrikaner at that tree are riveting. Fast forward from the 70s til today and the words are just as powerful. Thanks for the post.
Saw this film with my dad years ago and it made an intense impression on me. Made a model same colours of the DC3 as a kid. dad did a tour in Algeria for French army and met Roger in PizGloria, Mürren, Switzerland,1990s
I remember seeing it when it came out. The ghastly gore was a bit too much for a thirteen year-old. All subsequent versions of the film on cable and VHS had the most gruesome parts edited out.
No way this is just a great action movie. I love the political subtexts. Every hue of murder and violence. White on white, Black on Black, White on Black, Black on white. And all because the business men are pulling strings and doing deals back at the club in Piccadilly. Love it. Joan Armatrading's song stops me dead everytime I hear the line "Sad are the eyes, yet no tears." Great clip, Thanks for posting
A very racist film which funded apartheid.

1: They were not part of the SAS but formed from BSAP SB. Although several 1 RSAS did join.
2: To be fair to that massive cunt. The Terrorist bases were based over the border, where else should thier leader be than at the HQ.

No! Sorry it was my fault!! I understood that your Dad was a fellow from this kind of Army! You are no way insulting!

Frank Finlay. Also the 'Witchsmeller Purseivant' in The Blackadder. By far his best role IMO!

If you read the book, it shows that Falkner and Sandy stay behind and keep the Simbas away long enough to allow the Wild Geese to escape!

you should see the part where the medic gets cut up into tiny peces and there all crowding round him stabing him to death gross

@candyeyedrocker
