The biggest advantage strikers have in MMA today is that it's no gi. Foot locks are practically impossible after a couple of rounds. So are a lot of sweeps.

Gi MMA would be cool. You'd see so many more submissions and Judo throws and the like.

Oh well people don't like that.

The Gracies are excellent on the ground. Present rules on most MMAs standing up the fighters if the ground game became boring is not encourageing the development of ground grappling techniques. Pre UFC old Japanese uninterrupted fights are super good on the ground game. I believe all of present day MMA champs couldn't match the excellent grappling tencniques of those era. Presently very few of the UFC fighters effectively applied foot lucks in their fights.

I wouldn't get so caught up in the last name itself. Matt Serra is a Renzo Gracie student. GSP trained with Renzo until he had to fight Serra. Not to mention Nog, Silva, BJ Penn, all black belts in brazilian jiu jitsu. BJJ wouldn't be here today without the Gracies so just because they themselves aren't champs doesn't mean they're irrelevant in MMA. Not to mention i've met a few (Renzo, Igor, Gregor, Daniel) and they all have more heart then anyone i've ever met.

Why aren't the interviews like this one more popular with the mainstream media. MMA has taken a lot of knocks for being barbaric. If people would take the opportunity to listen to guys like Renzo, Rickson and Master Helio, (who are all so well spoken on this sport) I'm sure MMA would be viewed in an much more positive light than it currently is in popular media portrayals. Send the detractors to watch this clip and I'm sure they'll think differently. Great interview.

I don't think this sport is for everyone, mind you, but I do think there are a lot of people who could learn to appreciate the beauty and athleticism of MMA if they had a chance to learn about it from an experienced person. My mom still can't watch me fight, but she can, and does, watch MMA on TV with me. She has come to admire the athletes for their abilities and heart. And it's all due to having it explained to her from an insiders perspective.
