  • Frank McVeigh, lovely stuff there... ran across you just by accident here at YouTube. I'm in L.A. and wish we had met long ago - I could have used you in my band. We could have made beautiful music together. Really. I gave up drumming 30 years ago for guitar, and am still trying to find an instinctive drummer in this town. Keep up the good work, and keep posting - I''ll be watching. Best of luck.

    Nicholas Savalas - (818) 396-NICK

  • @nsavalas ...Thanks Nick - appreciate the kind words. I'm always looking for quality collaboration via the web......so, who knows...? Thanks for watching..!

  • really nice

  • @garsbaby ....thanks..!

  • What type of heads are those? they sound great. awesome job btw.

  • @GenTorrio ...thanks..! Aquarian Studio X

  • @artjock47 How long have you had your DW kit? and what do you think of them compared to other brands??

  • @GenTorrio I have been playing DW's since about 2003. They are very nice. I think they are comparable to Yamaha, Sonor, Pearl, Tama. If you take the time to tune carefully...they will all sound good. Actually, I just like buying American..!

  • This was an excellent instructional video. I was having a lot of difficulty listening for the patterns. This has clarified some of the trickier parts for me. Thanks for posting. Keep up the great work.

  • @daewoozoo ...Thanks - you're welcome..!

  • Wow, I am impressed, clicked on this by accident and stayed for the whole performance!!!

  • @CaliforniaFather ....Thanks..!

  • Yes I am Randy. I marched way back in the mid sixties with minor Drum Corps in the western New York area. Still, I attribute my rudimental knowledge and prowess to those early years. I have since then always applied them to my set playing.

To further my opinion of your Aja clip--that's one heck of an accomplishment! Gadd is and has been a huge influence on my playing as was Buddy, Louie, Joe, Tony, and a host of others. Drumming is my "young pill!"

  • @drummingnuts ....thanks Randy - that's very kind of you. I got into kit drumming after my drum corps days - a late start at 20. I'm now 49...and you sir, serve as excellent inspiration to keep moving forward and raising the bar. Many thanks for the kind words - really enjoyed your solo work...top notch..! Cheers....!

  • The only way I can let you know this is by commenting here. Check out a couple things I have done as well. 'Randy Charles Military solo' and ' goorvin' on Thursday' I think you'll enjoy them.

  • @jonrandrum ....are you Randy..? I enjoyed them very much..!! Thanks for sharing. Who did you march drum corps with..? I was Crossmen tenors: 82/84.

  • Very nice! You seem to be quite accomplished! Nice touch and real good time! Way to go!

  • sweet and smooth - looks effortless the way you're playing.

did you ever write out the fade-out groove? i haven't been able to find a good transcription.

  • @akweiss65 ....Thanks - naah, I just listened to the song. I'm playing a samba and trying to match the back-beat.

  • Well done sounds just like Gadd ;-)

  • did you do this all by ear ? nicely done though!

  • Hey - Just found your channel and subscribed. Love your setup and covers. Really impressive. So funny that I have a very similar setup of DW drums and love my Paiste Sigs also. What are the sizes of your toms? Can't tell if you have 8-10-12-14 0r 10-12-14-16. Keep on rockin.

  • @stickmanparty....Hey, thanks..! Welcome aboard. They are 10-12-14-16.

  • Very good tuning !

  • @baloo128 ..thanks...! Tried to drop them a bit like Gadd's.

  • Real nice job man! I've been listening to this track since it came out in 77' and it never gets old, nor does it sound dated, that goes for every track on "Aja". Classic drummer playing a classic song from one of the best albums ever released. Nice sounding drums and cymbals too. Beautiful!

  • Where do you gig, what is your musical history?

  • @SKYSCRAPERMCG ...Not gigging at the moment - looking for something. I'm a drum corps brat that got a late start playing the kit. I started playing set at age 20. After marching two years with the Crossmen drum & bugle corps - 1982 / 1984.

  • @artjock47 That's a shame man - you should be out there playing - you're better than about 90% of the videos I see on here...and I watch a LOT!

  • @NouveauNick ...Thank you, Nick - that is very kind of you to say..!! Thanks for watching..!!

  • Well done. Please make a cover of Do It Again.

  • @Rushfan551 ..Thanks..! I probably won't do that one - it's a basic groove tune that would not translate very well on Youtube. But I love that tune..! Thanks for watching.

  • I heard from some guys I know that worked with Steely Dan that Gadd recorded this song in one take!!!!

  • @swtracey ...Yeah, I heard a similar tale. That he took two takes - and they used the first one. Amazing.

  • whats the sticking for the lick at 2:00?

  • @allmetaliswelcome ... RLRfoot, (basically a herta ending with your foot)

  • Excellent! I'm a fan...

  • Nice Work!! God, what an amazing song. Hate to sound old, but they don't make them like that anymore.

  • @1wizardofx ...Thanks..! You're right they 'don't make'em like that anymore. And I 'am' old..!

  • That was great. Awesome job!

  • @SonorSonicFan ...Thanks so much...!

  • One of my fav grooves to practice with... great work man.. I learned something from this too... Around 1:46, where the song picks up, seeing you play it that way has made me think about that differently... U see, Ive always had it in my head that entire part is played as if it was one giant fill.. lol...But I like how u went back to basic position and played it like it was a beat/groove with fills and not just a solo or many fills put together... And now I can see that.. so THANKS

  • @nckey42 ...Hey, thanks! I'm glad you were able to get something out of this - very cool..!

  • Wow Frank, Phenomenal! Great work!

  • @newmannow ....Very kind of you - thanks!!

  • wonderful. well done!

  • @FHD59 ....many thanks..!

  • see how easy that was ....about 8 hours a day practice for 10 years should take care of that ....sounded great , really enjoyed watching and listening .;-)

  • @123rockc ....hahaha...thanks!

  • WOW Nice Job you have that one done, Pretty damn close to Gadd. Always a fun song to jam too!!!

  • @swtracey ...Wow....thanks a lot..!

  • Excellent! A classic.

  • @shootingalbatross ...Indeed it is..! Love the "Dan".

  • amazing ! did you use a transcription ? and if yes than from where ?

  • @Benfreidkin22 ....Thank you..! Nope - no transcription. Just listened to the recording.

  • Brilliant! You made a very difficult song look so easy.

  • @Onion37 ....Thank you very much..!

  • Really nice drum set! It pays to have a decent set. Nice sets are always easy to play, sticks bounce off right. Everything is nice to play, you know what you wanna do when a set sounds nice. This set sounds $10,000 - $15,000. They make drums good these days (if you can afford it). The drumming in Steely Dan was amazing for 1972.

  • @Aliendear ...Thanks! Yep.....that drum set plays itself..!

  • @artjock47 yw.... And you're a good drummer. I would like to see you do Any Major Dude or Dirty Work, "You tell me that your SuperFine Mind has come Undone, Any major dude with half a heart will tell you my friend - Any minor world that falls apart falls together again, When the demon is at your door, in the mornin' it won't be there, --no more "

  • What I find most amazing about yr performance is the apparent ease...classic sign of a master ! Would love to see you take on Gadd's "Late in the Evening" or Colaiuta's "It had better be tonight" (BTW, check out the very cool cover of the latter Buble hit by a youngster named Findrums, also on Youtube ).

  • @rangjungyeshe .....you are too kind Sir..! What I find amazing is that Gadd did this in 2 takes. I believe they used the first one. :)

  • As a life-long Steely Dan fan, who has listened to this track zillions of times, I gotta say this is totally awesome. It's amazing to watch someone getting so close to recreating Gadd's 35-year old original performance...you make it look almost straightforward. And you even got the stick-clash in....Thanks so much for taking the time to get on top of it and film it.

  • @rangjungyeshe ...Hey, I really appreciate that. It's nice when people "get it". Thanks so much for the kind comments and glad you enjoyed this..!

  • well done!

    You nailed it.

  • @wmteng .....Thanks very much..!

  • very good style very smooth
