I have this DVD, Mr. Kremer had a tough time going back to recording the Bach partitas, which he had done in his youth. It is an exellent documentary and is well worth the money. It´s all about comparing different renditions of the repertoire, as each performer sheds light on the selections. Why bother posting these food-fight comments? In most of these videos, the performers are doing their absolute best, the rest of us are would-be instrumentalists. Enjoy the Stradivarius!
@Peter0808Hsu I'm sure he plays so much better than you, so maybe that's something we have to change, maybe his posture is part of his whole interpretation.
@andresmpaz I think you can't play the violin right? If you know how to play the violin you'll know what I'm talking about. stop your Idolatry, be wise
I have to throw in another 2 bits on his timing/tempo. Music is written with whatever intentions and purposes, but is performed at a time and in a place, adaptable to the setting. In this case, Kremer's not only playing the violin, he's playing the ROOM, working the acoustics, allowing them to speak out. Note his posture & position, his facing & movement of the violin; how echos and reverberations change as result. This is no accident -- he's playing the whole darn building! Outrageous!
Thanks for posting this! Fantastic play in a most effective location!
About the room/echo: Kremer doesn't have to justify or defend himself, eh? Let's assume he picked that room and that spot in it on purpose. For one, it looks great and glorious. For another, the acoustics DO do fabulous things with swells on this piece, yah? Let's face it: he found this gorgeous spot where Gidon Kremer can hear Gidon Kremer play Bach. How cool is that? He's totally soaking it up along with us :)
In continuation of my last remark, I find that adding a echo lowers the bar that one needs to play at to acheive an excellent tone. Bad playing (not saying that this is an example of bad playing) is cushioned by the echo to make it sound better than it would be without effects. Thus many people are attracted to a facade instead of genuine playing and emotion
@Aeolius4 whether a juvenile with good or bad orthography (achieve not acheive), your opinion is expressing of the fact that you've yet to learn how to appreciate certain aspects of music. The sound of the violin is the very "effect" of certain fibers inducing vibrations onto the strings thinly stretched over the body of the instrument. So the room extends the perturbation of that effect to another level, what of it? Everything about art is artificial.
@Ooidal In retrospect, I would agree with what you say. However, I still think that there is still some validity in my opinion. With a cooler head, (re-reading what i have written, it is clear that the angle taken is much more extreme than I would now intend) I think that echo, if used in a mature, professional, and competent manner, enhances the sound produced by musician and instrument. However, if used without even the thought of incorporation of the echo into playing, it is superfluous.
Kremer does this the best...his full set of these pieces he recorded in the 80s I think is so much better then all the rest--and the Chaconne in particular makes my hair stand on end.
wonderful interpretation, yes its liberal w the timing and phrasing but bloody hell the musician is occ allowed to express his own freedom of expression.
anyone who wants to hear kremrs greatness should listen to the full version
I was at a buddhist retreat and found a nun in the meditation hall playing this in her practice. She is a professional violinist- it radiated peace. A rare treat!
What an original interpretation, one can learn a lot from studying and enjoying it. However, I didn't think I could imagine a version of the Chaconne with such a liberal application of time. Actually, one of my new pet peeves is when violinists tamper with the flow of the phrasing by misuse of rubato. For example, Kremer breaks the flow of the last phrase by pausing for far too long at 2:30. George Enescu talked a lot about the "pulse" of Bach, like a heartbeat, which I've taken to heart myself.
This is a deeply felt, personal performance. I completely agree with @kammermusiken that Kremer is completely involved in what he's doing and doesn't care what people might think of his appearance or mannerisms.
Yo precencie en Nueva York el ciclo completo de las Sonatas y Partitas de Bach en una sola audicion por el maestro Kremer, soy gran admirador de este soberbio violinista, una experiencia inolvidable.....
i don't know 'bout you guys, butI like heifetz' version better than gidon.
at 1:41, i like heifetz, he puts emphasis on that chord, while gidon just plays it normally. I also like the "da-dan" chord of heifetz better than "dannn" chod of gidon, if you kno what i mean.
These musicians are all masters offering their interpretations of a piece. All are correct. All at this level of musicianship are wonderfully done. Appreciate each one on their own merit. Comparison is not an issue at this level of competance.
I don't know but I do believe in respecting the composer and what he's written down. I'm sure he could explain why he had to play it this way but I just want to hear the music and its rhythm as the master composed it. I'm a player myself but I made it a point to preferably not make the composers turn in their grave.
Mr. Kremer is one of the most remarkable violinists to which I have had the honor of listening-the Chaconne is a personal journey for each Master, they each have their own phrasing and interpretation which I totally enjoy and thank them for allowing me to share--it is part of them, their life and their work.
he's my favorite violinist, but i have to admit: this is not the best version of the chaconne... i can't understand how the Kyung Wha Chung's 1977 recording is never comented, she is divine. But after i heard Kremer playing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto, I'm sure he can do better
When we're getting older and more relaxed about life and start to be more aware of what makes us happy - I think there is a time when we don't give a shit about our appearance or behaviour especially when performing arts. This man is happy and sucks it all in - the music, a great instrument and maybe an inspiring environment. I'm thinking if those who complain about his appearance are those who are scared to listen to their own voice on an answering machine.. ;)
@jasonform You are quite obviously a juvenile, As your spelling is awful to say the least.
This music is Inspiring and Amazing, Yet you feel the need to talk nonsense about someone who is speaking his mind.
When you reach an age where this music is appealing to you then you will understand how he feels and what he was trying to express. So run along now and waste your life as angry individual, We will be here enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this truly amazing music.
@grommett90 Please don't speak out both against him and his atrocious spelling, and juveniles, as I am a juvenile and my spelling is, on most occasions, perfect.
The playing here is exquisite, but I do not think that the echo was needed to enhance it. I appologize if it turns out that the echo was not added in, but the acoustics of the room he was playing in was what was causing the echo.
I detest the practice of adding effects to a classical performance as it lowers the bar that is needed -
It's sad to play this magnificent violinist grow old. Violin was his life- they say he went insane from too many hours in the practice room. Probably not true. In my mind, he has the best recording of the last rose as well as one of the best of Der Erlkonig. He truly is an amazing musician.
He's not THAT old. 55 to 60. Compare this to Grapelli or Segovia. You can find You Tube performances they gave when they were much MUCH older, and still they left you impressed over what the human race has to offer.
Is that supposed to be funny? Where's your work on YouTube? I'd love to hear some superior playing right now - got any to match your superior comments? Well? Still waiting... OK shuffle off back to the punk rock section :-)
