He was original and authentic and didn't sell out for money. He remained true to himself. The music 'corporate industry' has ruined many a great musician and music. It is such prostitution and just because he didn't 'make it' by their corporate standards is only a good sign. Joni Mitchell had the same problem with these music pimps. I praise Kenny Rankin and hail him as one of the musical 'greats'. His music will live on and is now immortal.
I wish I could have met Kenny Rankin. My wife turned me onto his music and all I could think is, "How could I not have heard of Kenny Rankin?" What a great voice . his ability to weave in and out and around a melody is absolutely amazing. Beautiful!
Kenny was a musician's musician and should have been far more famous than he was. An AMAZING vocalist & instrumentalist with a totally unique sensibility and interpretation. His scatting was my favorite of any jazz singer i've ever heard ('Do It In the Name of Love' blew me away every time i heard it....)
So glad i didn't miss the chance to see you in the Bay Area in the 90s...
I was privilaged to have enjoyed Kenny Rankin and Harry Chapin in the 2000 seat Syrian Mosque in Pittsburgh in the 1970's.......It was amazing. This is one of my favorites from Kenny. God Bless both of you.
Just tonight, a couple moments ago, I read while searching for Rankin videos that he died. Wow. His music of the mid '70s stuck with me for years, and I was able to see him maybe 8 years ago at Ramapo College. Special voice, guitar playing, and songs will keep him as one of the best for me. Thanks Kenny, for years and years of wonderful feelings hearing your songs. They will continue until I'm able to catch up with you again. I can't believe you're gone...
I saw him in San Diego and he was struggling with his set. He was very apologetic but he noticeably was embarrassed. He apologized profusely with humor. He was a constant gentleman and a real professional. He stated it was the medication he was taking. After cutting the session short, he hung around to sign a few CDs and left. Shortly thereafter, Kenny passed away. That night, his departure was classy and intimate; very much like his music. He was one of our generations legendary vocalists.
@TheSolaccent wow is that so? what did he pass from? I saw hime 3 times over the last few years and was able to speak w him. the last show he seemed a little less comfortable and maybe a little irritable at someone taking his picture up close without asking. I dont think he was feeling well but he allowed us to photo w him. Sweet artistic Kenny. RIP singing with the angels!
I received a call several days ago from an old friend in LA. He's also a musician and I ask him, "What is Kenny up to?" He made me aware that Kenny had died. When ever he would be in town we would get together. We lost touch over the years but I have always remembered him to be the warm hearted friend he always was. His eloquent voice and from the heart songs will always be some of my favorites. I'm sure he is singing to the Angels in the eternal silver mornings of Heaven. See ya soon Bro. JAB
@mrJAB1954 I heard of his passing shortly after it happened. I was introduced to Mr. Rankin's Music by my mom as a child in Hawaii and to this day his music is still a strong favorite. I teared the day his passing, such a remarkable talent who had graced this world in what was widely known as kindness and humility. I will always regret not having the opportunity to see him play in person and to thank him for sharing his gift and affecting so many aspects of my life and perspective positively.
gives me goose bumps to hear this again; heaven's band just got a whole lot better, Kenny was amazing and I am intrigued to see in these messages that people who actually met and knew him considered him to be the consummate gentleman......I'm not surprised. His wonderful soul comes through in his voice.
This brings back SO many memories.....I recently this year had a stroke and almost died....listening to this song and hearing Kenny singing with the band....heals my mind....Thankyou Kenny from Neil
My husband and I saw him 3 times - twice at a small cafe place called The Turning Point in Piermont, NY, and another time at Music at the Mansion in Montebello, NY. He is one of the reasons we got together - we both loved his music before we knew each other!
I am a singer songwriter. Kenny was simply put, the greatest vocalist I have ever heard. He was by miles my favorite. I am fortunate to have seen him twice and met him once. He felt like family. A true gent. "The Kenny Rankin Album" is my favorite album of all time, and I have bought 4 CDs of that album, and given them to my family. I took Mom and Grandmom, and my Dad and Sister also saw him. They all loved him. We miss and love you. Take good care of him God.
eediebeedie...I totally agree with you. I have a lot of my vinyl and I use my turn table. I have five Kenny Rankin albums, including the one this is on.....

It takes alot of guts and skill, to cover a Stevie Wonder song and make it sound just as good. This one is just as chilling
