@radiochris1 The Performer intake is your problem, and the Cobra cam. It is little more than a stock 5.0 cam. The Performer only flows to 5500 rpm and the GT40Ps like to turn 6000 or more, they flow 200/140 cfm right out of the box. I have GT40Ps with a Performer intake and I can feel it nose over at 5700 or so. Even with the crappy intake and a flat-tappet cam, I trapped 104.2 mph shifting at 6,000 every gear. It is getting an RPM Air Gap and E-fan next week, looking for 270 whp.
Jake Lamotta, who installed the crate engine, said it performed better than he would have guessed. He's the expert (owner of Lamotta Performance), so I trust what he says. It's way more power than I need!
@radiochris1 He has no experience with these heads then. We have GT40P headed Mustangs with very minor port work in the high 11s with letter cams here in AZ. They are capable of putting 300 hp to the tires without any port work at all. VERY, VERY good heads with the right combo.
@savagexhaley14 dude, don't come at me like you know everything ass hole. I meant a rebuilt block, Try being an asshole elsewhere because it is no one gives a flying fuck. But then again I love how people like yourself come home from a hard day in 11th grade betting picked on and then you come home, get on the computer and look up cars you would like to have and bash everyone like they did to you in school today. but you know what, everyone needs to vent, just some need to stop being ASSHOLES!!!
@carboneclipse3g a rebuilt short block isnt gonna give you any more power than a stock short block thats been well-maintained. a stock rebuild kit isnt considered an upgrade douchebag. stop trying to insult people over the internet and pretending to be a badass. and these arent cars id like to have. these are cars that ive owned. ive owned 4 mustangs, 3 of them were foxbodies and i currently own a 1986 gt and will probably be owning an 89 lx or another 86 gt by the end of the week
@savagexhaley14 Even a very well maintained motor will lose compression over the years and the most of the gaskets will be pretty shot if not leaking. And who started this shit with the "IDIOT" comment. I don't give a shit what you own, you need to get some respect. A simple, well I disagree would have worked but no, You have to be an asshole, And you are a rice boy according to your channel with that tsi of yours and none of a Mustang what so ever. STOP LYING, SHUT UP AND STAY IN SCHOOL asshole
@carboneclipse3g ive owned 4 mustangs.......you need to go play some more need for speed. you were called an idiot because you are spreading false information. and respect is something that is EARNED not just owed to you because youre a person.
@savagexhaley14 t's called self-Respect, something you don't have, and no, I an 50% owner and I am the driver. It's what has to happen when you are given free stuff, it is a trade off, I hate the decals but love the job, free space, and supplies etc. I an done with you until you get respect and learn a few things, A rebuilt engine is going to be a hell of a lot tighter than an old one from 1985!!!
@savagexhaley14 so don't be afraid to put up some videos of them imaginary mustangs of yours, oooo that's right you have none, Just that ricer TSi of yours and a retarded chevy monte shito. I love all the mustangs in the background with your trailer home that only has your monte carlo there. Don't lie, we always find out by watching the videos that you supply on your account. and don't say its in the garage, you only have room for that jeep thats in there. as I said, get some respect and think!!
@carboneclipse3g for one, thats a 74 chevy pickup in the garage, not a jeep, retard. where are your cars? are you even old enough to have one? how was my talon a ricer? it only had performance mods on it. it looked completely stock. ill pm you pictures of my mustang because i cant post them in a comment
@savagexhaley14 put up a video, you know how to do that. I work for Deist Automotive, look though my videos. ooo, and all of yours are beaters, and I want to see a rear end photo of the 94. Mine are in videos one is a drag car in progress, right now, it is running 11.87 in the quarter, the other is my daily driver running 14.3 on a stock motor and 2:73 rear gears. How do we know they are not your friends or something??? you talk alot of shit with no respect and one way or another, you will learn
@carboneclipse3g and how do i know the cars in the videos are yours? theyre at a dragstrip. i have dragstrip videos too. at least all the pictures of my cars are in front of the same house, because theyre MY cars. not just cars that i wish i had. go play some more video games.....
@savagexhaley14 Your talon is a ricer with because you are to cheap to fix the headlights, added the cheap pepboys gauges, and you have a huge coffee can muffler, 4.5" tip??? is that really needed? you went the ricer rout. you bash them but you should just join them. and do all of us a favor, buy one car, fix it up, PAINT IT (ALL OF IT) than then do another, you are starting to look like a total fucking redneck with all that sit in your yard ps, atleast I am smart enough to take it to the track!
@carboneclipse3g hey, at least i own a car. what car do you have? and almost all of my vehicles have been one color actually. the eagle had a 3" full apexi exhaust and was running a 16G turbo on 16psi. so yes the exhaust was needed. the headlights worked too. smart enough to take it to a track? get off your high horse and stop trying to convince yourself that youre better than everybody else. youre a youtube toughguy, who in reality is probably a 14 yr old kid who thinks he "knows" about cars
i have a 1985 gt, and i want it to be loud. like really loud, but legal. i have heard the generic turbo muffler for 30 bucks will be obnozious. is that correct?
i have a 89 f150 fuil injected its my mud truck i just got offered gt40p heads for 200 do you think they will make a noticable difference in power and what would i need to put these on and have them work right thanks
From what I've heard, the GT40-P heads were the best Ford ever produced for the 302. Definite difference in power from regular heads. Don't know anything about installing them, had my local speed shop take care of everything. I've been running them 2+ years now and love them. Good luck!
it should add 35-40hp, but then you have to spend money on custom headers cause the park plugs go straight into the gt40p head. regular gt40's are better in my opinion, gt40p's only flow 2 more cfm than the regular gt40's anyway. look on my channel and look at the 71' f100 burnin em'. it has gt40's with a edelbrock performer plus cam and burns 1-3rd on dry road without the brake.
GT40P heads won't add 35-40 hp (all other things being equal). They will spice up the mid-range, but no stock production Ford Windsor head will add that much over the worst of them. I agree that GT40's are better than the P's. 289 HIPO heads are better, 1969-71 351 Windsor heads are better. A little bowl porting, gasket matching and bigger valves on any of those will help also. HOWEVER...you really want an aftermarket head for any gains over 5000 rpm's. The exhaust ports are a cork.
they have been dyno tested to make 35-40 more horsepower, maybe not at the rear wheels but they do at the flywheel. they have also outflowed the old 351w. look up flow charts. and i know the 289 hipo heads dont flow better, i had a pair on before the gt40's, they were ported and polished and had bigger manley stainless steel valves, and it would only spin in first and chirp second, now with gt40's in smokes all through third. they helped ALOT
Due respect, but: Valve sizes (stock) and the volume of the exhaust port on ANY stock Ford head are not "performance" oriented. Ported with bigger valves? sure, but that changes things, doesn't it? The 289 HiPo have smaller combustion chambers, guide plates and adjustable rockers due to the solid lifters. That is an improvement in compression and allows a wider range of cams. Still too small on the valves and ports. The early 70's 351 Windsor have the largest stock valves. Still bad.
No they are not. Find a real flow chart not just one off some random website. It has been proven time and time again the gt40's and the gt40p's out flow the 351 heads, its not by alot but they do outflow them. Why do you think SVT put the gt40's on the 93 cobras and gen1 lightnings?
@AJahtp notice i said ALOT of them. not all are wrong. not bashing the gt40 stuff.. ive used it before but the dooe casting 351 heads worked a lot better on my previous motor {331} Can be seen in my videos. no hard feelings.
I'm not bashing the 351 stuff either there good heads but stock on stock i prefer the gt40's. And i got some questions about your 331 build. Can you tell a good difference between a 331 and just a stock stroke 302? Cause im wanting to build a motor for a ranger and i would really like to build a stroker but i dont really want to spend alot on a new rotating assembly and block work unless theres a good difference.
do u like the GT40p heads>>?? iv got a set im gana put on my 351w i just havent had the time to put her together really.....my main question is could u tell a difference in power? thanks plus was this car camed or stock?
just pickup an 85 gt runs strong im pulling the engine to reseal it and i have a chance to get some gt40p heads r they worth puting on whats the advantage.
Gt40p heads work fine with an 85 or 88-93's stock bottom end. 86 H.O. motors and some 87's didn't have valve reliefs. You have to have Frpp headers because of the plugs, but other than that, it's a bolt on swap.
gt40p heads will still work with 86 pistons. and that is true about the 650dp's my car is running high 11's one. you can check it out on my other videos, or search for big3racing mustang
tell my about it. i put gt40 ps on my mustang. it had jba shorties so when i put those on. i had no clearence for the plug wires. so i used the coil wire with the sharp 90degree elbow. but i think those heads were sittin too long i broke a valve stem after a week. i got a 89. once i get runnin good i'll dyno it.
Sounds bad.. and not in a good way, its definetly running a bit rich in the video, noticeable when he gets on it, it wants to bog right away... and also by the black sooty exhaust in the higher rpm range...
Update on my car :)...got my heads and cam, underdrive, timing set and just needs a tune in my 85' Gt Cobra. Running with LS1's in my town now :D. Im definatly making more than 238. The 2002 Trans Am LS1 I raced claimed 400RWHP and I lost by 1 or 2 car lengths. Remeber Im running 2.73 gears and he was on 3.42. He was really impressed though.
dam very nice hp, hey man want to ask what tipe of carb did you buy for the stang, i have an 84 gt and im searching for the best edelbrock carb, do you have any suggest? tnx
I ran a 600 Edelbrock on my 85GT for a while. It seemed to run pretty good til I put a 650d.p. on it. It was like a daylight and dark difference. The Holley has about twice the throttle response.
i like the way holleys perform better than edelbrocks do. but i run edelbrocks because they are much easier to work with. i find holleys to be such a pain in the ass.
Oh, and we got rid of all emission controls, and am saving for electric fans and underdrive pullies.. I was thinking around 300hp not 23*.. If its true, than man.. im just going to buy a damn 351 crate or boss 302 and S/C or Turbo that shit. Fuck this is disappointing..
Remember, stock power was NOT 210 HP to the rear wheels. My combo (with a Holly carb) is putting out about 50 HP over the factory RWHP. The numbers compare to the 2004 GT, which the factory rated at 260 HP and 302 TQ. This is with no fine tuning, and barely broken in. Jake Lamotta said it turned better numbers than he though it would. I'm happy, and that's what counts!
im getting a 302 mexican block and drop some dss internals to it....lol...dont be disapointed cause i bet you run faster than others with more done to them.....remeber a 300 hp 5.0 with a good tune and all the right suporting mods will run low to hight 12's....i seen them....and with 400hp low 11's...
something does NOT seem right with that.. Like, my 85' has edlebrock performer air-gap intake, Demon carb, full mac 2 1/2" O/R exhaust with H pipe, MSD Plug wires and Ignition box and coil, new cap and rotor on distributor..and stock power is 210 HP/ 270 TQ.. im getting AFR heads and a FRPP Cam..maybe something like F-303..and going with 3.73..and your saying I wont get more than 30 horsepower on stock from that?.. *sad face*
Well, yeah.. I know. But still, I was expecting a little more from my pony, but who knows, my combo might get a little more.. I wont know till I dyno it. And to be honest, right now it still rapes 95% of the things in my city (of 50,000 people). So im happy with it too :).. cant imagine it with the cam and heads + gears, going to be a very nice daily driver :D
i believe you cause i have a e303 cam, intake manifold, longtubes, cai...and i mosly rape the shit of whats out there lol....i still have stock heads...im saving for tf tw heads, 3.55 gears.bigger injectors and a small shot of nos....lol
Stay away from the FRPP letter cam's, they are OLD grinds. Go with a newer comp grind or even Trick flow. The letter cam's leave alot of power on the table.
Really? I honestly never would have guessed that FRPP wouldnt be atleast AS good as other aftermarket cams.. from what I heard e-303's were a common cam for the 302's.. but yeah we were debating Trickflow too.. thanks for the comment though, gives me stuff to think about.
I had an E-cam originally, they are so common because many people make the same assumptions over and over. FRPP just does not offer the best parts. The E-cam is decent, but there are better options out there. Also it appears from the video yours is a 5-speed car, but just in case you need to know the E-cam does not come in at all until 2300 RPM's or so, anything below that and it's an absolute DOG. Shouldnt be a problem with a 5-speed, but with an auto and no converter its BRUTALY SLOW.
yup, I got a 95 gt with an E-cam, stock heads, and an automatic and it is gutless. no bottom end at all. I was hoping a set of gt40p heads would give me a little more oomph
how are you only making 234/238? with all of that extra flow from the heads and exhaust i would think that its much closer to 300 if not more. is it carbed or FI?
really? i stopped for a sec and realized i was thinking in crank horsepower not wheel horsepower. haha whoops. still seems like it should be maybe 250 though.
The long block was $1750 from Titan Engines, and Lamotta's installation was $1200. The little things add up, though. I've probably got about 6k in it so far. 100 percent satisfied with how it turned out!
No body work yet, out of funds! Needs a fender, hood, and paint. My dad bought the car in '86 from a friend, so we know its history. We got more than 200,000 miles on the original engine.
what timing are you running cause those numbers are awfully low.

@BigBoyd06 230hp to 260hp is actually the average for a GT40 or GT40p standard bore 302. Port work can them them closer to 275hp to 300hp range.

did you have to run different pistons to get the GT40P heads to work?
bpowersman5000 3 years ago
Gt40p heads work fine with an 85 or 88-93's stock bottom end. 86 H.O. motors and some 87's didn't have valve reliefs. You have to have Frpp headers because of the plugs, but other than that, it's a bolt on swap.
brynfiv9 3 years ago
gt40p heads will still work with 86 pistons. and that is true about the 650dp's my car is running high 11's one. you can check it out on my other videos, or search for big3racing mustang

tell my about it. i put gt40 ps on my mustang. it had jba shorties so when i put those on. i had no clearence for the plug wires. so i used the coil wire with the sharp 90degree elbow. but i think those heads were sittin too long i broke a valve stem after a week. i got a 89. once i get runnin good i'll dyno it.

Sounds bad.. and not in a good way, its definetly running a bit rich in the video, noticeable when he gets on it, it wants to bog right away... and also by the black sooty exhaust in the higher rpm range...
black87gt 3 years ago
Nice! Im building a similar set up for my 79 coupe. GT40P heads, going to run an F cam though.
CRs4Life 3 years ago
tell me how it works out with the f cam. if you change spring to dual valve springs. Are you decking the heads?

Update on my car :)...got my heads and cam, underdrive, timing set and just needs a tune in my 85' Gt Cobra. Running with LS1's in my town now :D. Im definatly making more than 238. The 2002 Trans Am LS1 I raced claimed 400RWHP and I lost by 1 or 2 car lengths. Remeber Im running 2.73 gears and he was on 3.42. He was really impressed though.

dam very nice hp, hey man want to ask what tipe of carb did you buy for the stang, i have an 84 gt and im searching for the best edelbrock carb, do you have any suggest? tnx
DIGAUCHOMAN 3 years ago
Don't know about Edelbrock. I went with a 570 CFM Holly Street Avenger, straight out of the box. No problems
radiochris1 3 years ago
hey im thinkin about gettin a holley street avenger too
im gettin a 670cfm though, and a performer rpm inatke, How do u like yours?
oldsmobileboy 3 years ago
street avengers kinda suck, no tunability. just get a regular holley 650dp
wayfastwhitey45 3 years ago
I ran a 600 Edelbrock on my 85GT for a while. It seemed to run pretty good til I put a 650d.p. on it. It was like a daylight and dark difference. The Holley has about twice the throttle response.
brynfiv9 3 years ago
i like the way holleys perform better than edelbrocks do. but i run edelbrocks because they are much easier to work with. i find holleys to be such a pain in the ass.
xxshortyownzxx 2 years ago
i suggest not getting edelbrock. better off being used as paperweights
wayfastwhitey45 3 years ago
Oh, and we got rid of all emission controls, and am saving for electric fans and underdrive pullies.. I was thinking around 300hp not 23*.. If its true, than man.. im just going to buy a damn 351 crate or boss 302 and S/C or Turbo that shit. Fuck this is disappointing..
Nymbler 3 years ago
Remember, stock power was NOT 210 HP to the rear wheels. My combo (with a Holly carb) is putting out about 50 HP over the factory RWHP. The numbers compare to the 2004 GT, which the factory rated at 260 HP and 302 TQ. This is with no fine tuning, and barely broken in. Jake Lamotta said it turned better numbers than he though it would. I'm happy, and that's what counts!
radiochris1 3 years ago
im getting a 302 mexican block and drop some dss internals to it....lol...dont be disapointed cause i bet you run faster than others with more done to them.....remeber a 300 hp 5.0 with a good tune and all the right suporting mods will run low to hight 12's....i seen them....and with 400hp low 11's...
indestructible306 3 years ago
something does NOT seem right with that.. *sad face*
Nymbler 3 years ago
Well, yeah.. I know. But still, I was expecting a little more from my pony, but who knows, my combo might get a little more.. I wont know till I dyno it. And to be honest, right now it still rapes 95% of the things in my city (of 50,000 people). So im happy with it too :).. cant imagine it with the cam and heads + gears, going to be a very nice daily driver :D
Nymbler 3 years ago
i believe you cause i have a e303 cam, intake manifold, longtubes, cai...and i mosly rape the shit of whats out there lol....i still have stock heads...im saving for tf tw heads, 3.55 gears.bigger injectors and a small shot of nos....lol
indestructible306 3 years ago
Stay away from the FRPP letter cam's, they are OLD grinds. Go with a newer comp grind or even Trick flow. The letter cam's leave alot of power on the table.
HitmanSVT 3 years ago
Really? I honestly never would have guessed that FRPP wouldnt be atleast AS good as other aftermarket cams.. from what I heard e-303's were a common cam for the 302's.. but yeah we were debating Trickflow too.. thanks for the comment though, gives me stuff to think about.
Nymbler 3 years ago
I had an E-cam originally, they are so common because many people make the same assumptions over and over. FRPP just does not offer the best parts. The E-cam is decent, but there are better options out there. Also it appears from the video yours is a 5-speed car, but just in case you need to know the E-cam does not come in at all until 2300 RPM's or so, anything below that and it's an absolute DOG. Shouldnt be a problem with a 5-speed, but with an auto and no converter its BRUTALY SLOW.
HitmanSVT 3 years ago
yup, I got a 95 gt with an E-cam, stock heads, and an automatic and it is gutless. no bottom end at all. I was hoping a set of gt40p heads would give me a little more oomph
jumpriver021 2 years ago
how are you only making 234/238? with all of that extra flow from the heads and exhaust i would think that its much closer to 300 if not more. is it carbed or FI?
sikantwixxsted 3 years ago
570 CFM Holly Street Avenger, straight out of the box
radiochris1 3 years ago
really? i stopped for a sec and realized i was thinking in crank horsepower not wheel horsepower. haha whoops. still seems like it should be maybe 250 though.
sikantwixxsted 3 years ago
how much did all this cost you...
Remanufactured 302 with GT-40p heads, shorty headers, 2 1/2 true dual off-road exhaust, Holly Street Avenger carb, Edelbrock Performer intake, Cobra-spec cam, 3.27 gears.

The long block was $1750 from Titan Engines, and Lamotta's installation was $1200. The little things add up, though. I've probably got about 6k in it so far. 100 percent satisfied with how it turned out!
radiochris1 4 years ago
did you get any body work done? if you did how much?
calsonicSTi 4 years ago
No body work yet, out of funds! Needs a fender, hood, and paint. My dad bought the car in '86 from a friend, so we know its history. We got more than 200,000 miles on the original engine.

nice vid my frind has a 1985 mustang with a racing time chain and double spark recoil and we had no idea what the horsepower was till now so thanks!
