Burgs playing is phenomenal as usual, and the video is great.
But I've watched this several times in HD now and I am seriously underwhelmed by the pedal itself. The tones to be had are simply uninspiring. There are better boosters in its boosting applications and better overdrives in its role as a distortion pedal. Maybe it is simply not my type of dirt.
It sounds good - but I suspect this is one of those pedals that you really have to hear in the flesh - there is a lot of other stuff out there that i would rather spend my money on.
@Guitarisforgrins That's a good question! I think they goop the PCB for shielding purposes. I don't know of many builders that do this so I'm guessing that's the reason behind it. Any patent for such an old pedal would be expired by now, so there's no way there's any legal implications there.
@jonathanroosevelt It's a 2000 Fender Standard Telecaster. The electronics and pickups were removed and replaced with my own signature pickups (Brierley) and standard pots and wiring. A treble bleed was added to the volume pot which had the cool but unexpected effect of darkening the typical 'icy spike' a little while maintaining an even top end throughout the sweep of the pot. My favourite guitar next to the PRS, Charvel, Strat...
Nice playing. The pedal does sound like a Klon. First pedal I've ever heard that can do it. I've had tow Klons for 10 -15 years and know them very well. This Tone Monk is pretty much spot-on. I don't know if everyone 'needs' this particular set of tones, the beauty is in the subtlety, but for me, it's almost a must have (face it crank a Super Reverb to 8 with a good axy and you need nothing at all).
@Noseheros original Klon Centaurs are about $1000 and upward. anything lower than that is a pretty decent deal. JHS Klone is about $315 (i think) they do a great job reproducing it. check out rfort511 aka Fortner Guitars...he does a Klon and JHS Klone shootout. there's a very low key builder who does Klon clones for even lower than JHS...check out a group called Gear Talk on facebook for more info on that.
I liked the Phoenix when I had it, but it is definitely over priced. I have played better sounding Klones that cost half as much. That being said, it does sound great. It seemed a bit brighter than other Klones I have played. I must say though, why the hell is it gooped? Makes no sense to me.
@cosmogang haha seriously...it was understandable when the original Klon Centaur did that but it makes no sense to goop it when you've already cloned it.
@cosmogang Isn't the goop there to deter cloning of the circuit by burying the board and it's components? You'd have to destroy everything on the board just to see what it was. Oh the irony!
@cosmogang It's gooped to protect the proprietary design from unauthorized duplication. When it's covered that way, you cannot easily determine the values of the components used. Surely it was hard work reverse engineering and enhancing the legendary Klon Centaur overdrive, so Tone Monk are protecting their interests.

@MoSAE1856 No, the goop is usually used to hide the fact that the circuit is not original.
