@Yodavid1 Just listen Gorovitz and immediately after - Kisin, then vice-versa. Kisin is definitely plays better for me - he plays very clear and almost ideal in terms of presenting spirit of this music : real fly of bumblebee from the "Skazka o Цare Saltane"(Tale about Цar' Saltan), the opera this music was written for.
OMG, I half expected his eyes to roll back into his head and then he'd start levitating up from the bench! That was mad sick playing. It's so fast that it has to be instinctual because there's no time to process a thought and play at the same time. Am so jealous of that talent....brilliant.
@amirlost I love her rendition, but I think comparing these two versions might be like comparing apples and pears -- that is, kinda similar, but not the same, since Kissin uses the Rachmaninoff version whereas Yuja uses the Cziffra version...
He's one of the few pianists that I actually get somewhat excited, when I listen to him. He is my number 1 pick of all the one's I have listened to so far. I also like his interpretations better than many others. His dynamic variation, speed, power in those fast notes, accuracy. One of the master pianists of our time. I appreciate all the fine pianists, but Evgeny is my favorite.
I wish I could put up a valid argument to acuse Kissin of speeding this up digitally... but I have seen him live, and I know he has a technique of a god! Outstanding... sickening... Perfection!
i can play around this speed on the guitar :P but no doubt doing it on the piano is clearly much harder.... this guy's body must naturally produce finger steroids.
How the piece is meant to played...true perfection. No one can touch this performance, played by a genius of the piano.
It makes me sick to see this Maksim bloke trying to look really cool and amazing by playing the piece...and apparently it took him over a year to master...haha Kissin no doubt could learn this in a matter of hours.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Look this is only a level 6 piece. Maybe level 7 to play it to speed. I don't know why people get fascinated with this song.
I'm familiar with dozens and dozens of pianists. From the late 19th century to modern day. Kissin is nothing special.
To put him in a category of Rubinstein, Gilels, Kempff, Lhevinne, Hoffman, Horowitz (who was Evgeny's final instructor), Rachmaninoff. Is wrong. Even if he can play slightly faster... Which he can't among the people mentioned his music has no soul.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I also think that the concept that people who aren't on the level of concert pianists can't comment on them is absurd.
So no, I can't play this yet. Not at that speed. And when I can it wont sound as good as Kissin's version for quite some time. That doesn't mean that when I hear 10 other, legitimately better pianists (oh I forgot Emanuel Ax on my above list) that I can't tell that they are better than Kissin.
He should stick with Bach and non-romantic music. This is a good piece for him.
Well u see u need to listen to the fact that he plays beethoven, chopin, all of other kinds of pianists and his style is amazing to a very great extent now playing this song to actual speed is not lvl 6 or 7 i have no fucking idea how u think that =_=..the chromatics and the simple left hand is of course easy in technicals but the speed if u say thats lvl 7 or 6 u r fucking retarded im sorri but u r...
Lol im not saying this songs technique is hard, im saying this songs speed is hard...and im sorry to say that you can not achieve this speed if you've only been playing for a year and a half on piano...its not possible I would kno =\...
I'm really sorry to hear that. I am close to the that speed.
If you couldn't achieve a level of speed close to this after a year and a half you didn't practice enough. My piano teacher is a CMU music theory graduate I work with him several hours a week. I practice between 3-7 hours a day.
I play some of rach's Opus 23, 2 Prelude (was my teacher's recital piece). I got the left hand at speed, I kinda butcher the right, but still... year and a half dude. Just practice, you'll get there.
LOL ur giving me advice? o.O LOL sorry this is funny...seeing the fact that i FINISHED ARCT(performance level) of course I NEED WAY MORE PRACTICE...-.-
My anger comes from the fact that you acting kind of cocky on playing piano 1 year oo u can play almost as fast as this song...and second of all is not really knowing how kissin understands pieces and then just critiscizes him..-.-
When I'm playing my fastest I make a lot of mistakes, my tone is not always even. Occasionally (although less and less) I trip over my fingers. Sometimes I hit the wrong key.
I am not trying to come across cocky. I am merely stating that (whether you care to believe it or not) I can play close to that speed. I was just telling you how, having started relatively recently how I did it.
Another 6 months, perhaps a year those problems will probably be for the most part corrected.
I actually do have a problem from practicing as often as I do. My right hand is always injured, particularly my thumb. It aches all day and after vigorous practice it hurts even more.
I've tried not playing for 4 or 5 days and it seems to go away. As soon as I start playing hard and fast again it comes back.
Being the pedagogue you are, perhaps you have some advice?
EuphoricDan, I can agree with you in some ways, but I feel his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 3 is one of the best I've heard, though that's just my opinion... He also plays La Campanella well, though I prefer Yundi Li's performance a little more.
Yundi's la campanella made it sound pretty mellow..the word la campanella means the small bell or so to say just bell...do u really think a bell would have a mellow sound to it? or do u want it to have a crisp sound? understand the piece itself first then judge performers..
I am utterly convinced that that is the most flawless rendition of that song..... ever. Nobody has done it with greater perfection. It cannot possibly get any better.
That is the very definition by which perfection should be judged throughout the universe. Even things unrelated to the piano should be judged against the perfection of this. This isn't even a 9.999999999, it is a 10.0

I'm sorry guys... Kissin is a really fast and really accurate pianist but he has no passion or emotion in his playing.
Now, this is a very good piece for him... And a very, very easy piece at that... anyways keep Kissin away from the Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff.
Kissin is like listening to a computer play the piano. Thats my final thought. Until you guys start arguing with me, lol.
EuphoricDan 2 years ago
Try to play like him and then we'll talk !!!!
Listen to his Rachmaninoff Concerto 2, 32 variations Beethoven, Beethoven piano concerto, La Campanella......
And if this piece is easy show us your version of it !!!!!

So you know your stuff! Not.
Is nice that you disagree with the SMP level, even though its rated at level 7.
I am very familiar with Kissin as a pianist, he just got done touring my country playing chopin etudes. (which are also level 7, several are level 8)
If you have the audacity to call someone a "fucking retard" make sure that you are right.
Song is easy. My chromatic glissandros are almost as fast and I've only been playing for a year and a half. This is no "Gaspard de la Nuit".
