Dont believe in 2000 year old fairy tales, but this song is one of my favorites of all time. Whether its Beck, Judy Collins, Scottish bagpipes or the Steel Drums of the Caribbean it never ceases to "amaze" me!
I pray that I might have a share in the Eternal World to come... Yet I'm a wretched man... I pray for something so solace as this... go cross my path in the crossroads... Give me peace... Lord AND grant me a WAY to Your KINDNESS and Kingdom of love..
here's the hierarchy...Page, Beck, then waaay last is Clapton. (in comparing these 3 guitarists only)...Page and Beck are their own , whereas Clapton can't decide if he's blues, rock , or bubblegum. Who tries to get the "Clapton" sound? No one.
@llymphs you are funny! I saw Clapton live - I'm a fan - but I get what you are saying, I can't say I love everything from Clapton, and can't say anything terrible either about him because I know if I ever had the chance to meet him, I would be very excited. My favorite songs are the blues songs and enjoy the solos.
@llymphs What is it with you guys who insist on turning everything into a competition ? It all depends on when you saw them and what sort of a gig it was. Page has lots of class, he knows how to dress for the stage. Beck blows them all away and Eric bakes a nice cake. I've played with all of them and they all smoke.
@llymphs whoa whoa ... clapton was THE muscle back in the day. Namely Cream. A lot of players go for THAT sound, that vibrato, that intensity. Beck is the only one that kept getting better. Page is a recording legend. Clapton had the fire and muscle. Don't forget Peter Green, Pete Townshend, Harrison even.
that being said ... i agree that clapton's sound after cream is not desirable ... personally.
@llymphs it is rude but I kind of agree with you. Was verry disapointed when I went to see the From the craddle tour and Clapton played his tunes EXACTLY as they were recorded... Kind of strange when the album sounded so genuinely blues. I was expecting great and depply felt improvised solos but I almost got the tapes...
@GuyWithGuitars1 i'de have to agree i prefer at least 10 guys over clapton....i mean the guy can play but in my book he's not all that and a big of chips
Jeff Beck is without a doubt the best guitar player in the world for style and total originality and feeling. He's my favorite, it takes a life time to be the guitar player that he has become. Melvin Stroud Nashville, TN
The man connects with his guitar like a great singer with their larynx. I've never heard a note from Jeff and thought this could sound better if...it always fits perfectly...always.
I heard Beck play Somewhere Over the Rainbow and A Change is Gonna Come in concert a few years ago and it was phenomenal. This is so beautiful, the man has more talent in his thumb nail than I have in my arm.
i grew up in church, and think i took up guitar to spite them. this song is in my GENES. and i've never heard it better. i haven't played this song in what? 40 years? and i won't now because i could never match this. and truncheonsandshields, the only other player who made me feel like you express- just give up- is bill frisell.
I have always been inspired by this song and from the sounds of it Jeff Beck must be inspired to. It was written by an Captain of a slave slave ship who had a change of heart and turned around and took all the slaves back and set them free. On his way back home he wrote this song. Listen to it and tell Me what U think.

thats what an ol soul needs some gooooood music to rest the troubled mind!! i love hummin this song when shit gets me down, its like the lord is in this song letin you know its ok .
really man? everyone deserves their own opinion, but that is one of the most ignorant and straight up dumbest things i've heard anyone say. they are 2 of the greatest innovators of their instrument, alive and of all time. where is your credibility to make such a bold statement? and what stage is iwelcomedeath on, inspiring thousands and millions of people?
@truncheonsandsheilds Always thought Clapton was over rated myself. Another guitar great that was shadowed by Clapton's commercial success was Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac. Phenomenal
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far and Grace will lead me home.
Merry Axmas Vol 1, not sure if its still available or not. At this time there are no legit releases of his "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", also worth checking out is Les Paul's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
It's from an album entitled "Merry Axe-mas". Great album. Also features performances by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Brian Setzer, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Alex Lifeson...you get the idea.
This is what sets Beck apart from every other player. His exceptional taste.Lots of guys can go and play a worn out blues riff or a standard rock song.Jeff takes chances and plays what he digs.He can invoke more emotion without saying a word than any soul or gospel singer.
